To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

The show is just cringe worthy Eurotrash. It’s just an excuse for a camp night out, or in.

All the songs were total shite. It’s embarrassing. The 3 hair flicking Beyoncé tribute band were the worst. I was waiting for some hair extensions to go flying across the room.

At least we didn’t have to listen to the bearded Joan Collins impersonator.

RiverSkater · 23/05/2021 09:56

@DogInATent

Nine pages and no one's yet mentioned that Amanda Holden's contribution probably guarantees zero points next year too?
It was mentioned in the other thread. She was an embarrassment. Ignorant and insulting and laughing at her own ignorance.
EerieSilence · 23/05/2021 09:57

I've seen buskers performing and looking better than yer man who looked and sang like he just woke up in a gutter after a particularly wild stag night.
Why the sour grapes? He was shite. Boring, utterly forgettable, non-descript entity.

Maslina3 · 23/05/2021 10:01

Just rewatched the UK entry, it really didn’t deserve any points. The Italian entry was a real performance and deserved to win. France was a worthy second. I do not understand how Switzerland did so well, or why Germany did so bad, I though it was fun.
I live in a EU country and I have never experienced any anti uk feelings.

Empressofthemundane · 23/05/2021 10:02

I don’t think our song was good. None of the other songs stood out for me either. I can’t remember a single tune from last night.

If we want to watch Eurovision, the BBC should continue to pay for the broadcasting rights in the UK. Or let channel 5 pick it up. That would seem to be its true home.

But we should quit “buying” our way into the final. Do we need to be in the final to enjoy the silly, trashy tv? No.

Mamette · 23/05/2021 10:06

You should have sent UK Hon.

You would have completely run away with it!

Bing bang bong
Sing sang song
Ding dang dong
U.K. hon!

jollyho · 23/05/2021 10:07

@Samcro

its not a song contest. its a political thing now.
If it were political Israel wouldn’t have made it out of the semi final
Abhannmor · 23/05/2021 10:07

@velvetcurtains

To be fair, we could have the best known British talent with a really catchy song and we’d still never make the left side of the scoreboard.

Italy might have won last night but given what I’ve seen on Twitter makes me wonder if they’ll be disqualified

Tell us more !
SnottyLottie · 23/05/2021 10:07

The last decent song we had was the one Andrew Lloyd-Weber wrote and composed, with Jade Ewen as the singer.

I think we finished fifth and probably had a good shot at winning if it hadn’t have been for that really catchy Fairtytale song by that adorable Alexander Rybak.

We’ve been abysmal every since and the scoring reflects this. People like to blame strategic voting and stuff but we’ve just been that shit over the last 10 years.

Frogartist · 23/05/2021 10:10

The UK can't keep complaining that "Europe hates us" and at the same time take the mickey out of other contestants and call Eurovision "cheese" and a bit of a laugh. You can't have it both ways.

Graham Norton (and Terry Wogan before him) make comments about other countries and their songs and contestants that would be considered bullying if they were made about contestants on domestic shows like Britain's got Talent and Strictly.

Anyway, does Europe hate Germany as well?

FleetwoodRaincoat · 23/05/2021 10:11

The UK entry was so boring. It never really gets going and is trying too hard to be fashionable. It's easy to see why those who do something a bit different do really well. Everyone is bored to death of bland, homogenised modern music. Loved France, and thought Finland was better than Italy.

Geamhradh · 23/05/2021 10:11

@Abhannmor

Video doing the rounds of singer supposedly doing a line between performances. Already denied in presser.

oystercatcher44 · 23/05/2021 10:12

I always hoped that exiting Eurovision would be the one positive take away of Brexit Grin

Empressofthemundane · 23/05/2021 10:13

Umm, yeah, I think they do “hate” Germany. Not because WWII, but because they are seen to control the purse strings in the EU and to run the EU for their advantage sometimes to the detriment of smaller countries.

Brefugee · 23/05/2021 10:13

He deserved nil points it was cringy and fucking awful, it was embarrassing. Why send a fat nondescript bloke singing a, shite song off key who was dressed as the back seat of a Ford fiesta???

The song was bland and he was a bit off-key at the start. He took his 0points in good spirit, and the green room were kind.

Unlike posters who go for people's looks - that's a pathetic way to attack someone. There is no need for it.

Empressofthemundane · 23/05/2021 10:14

Bigger, richer countries in the EU will always be seen as bullies and feel like milk cows.

StColumbofNavron · 23/05/2021 10:15

I’m coming back to read the comments, but agree. I thought the song was ok but once you heard the others it was forgotten.

The problem I have observed (I’m half from another Eurovision participant) is that the UK treat it as a farce, whereas other countries often consider sending some of their best performers. Once Eurovision expanded the numbers taking part it also meant parts of Europe with similar tastes in music so Azerbaijan, Serbia, Turkey etc sometimes have singers that they all recognise or the sort of music they are used to listening to. Obviously there is/has been politics too but these other points aren’t insignificant.

Abhannmor · 23/05/2021 10:15

@DogInATent

Nine pages and no one's yet mentioned that Amanda Holden's contribution probably guarantees zero points next year too?
What did she say?
Runnerduck34 · 23/05/2021 10:16

UK is never popular in Europe, even more now.
I thought the song was good, definitely deserved more the nil point. The staging let it down a bit.
maybe we need a more quirky Eurovision song??
But tbh not matter what the song, who sings it,or how its staged we are never going to win , at least james went out in style and took it in good grace!

queenofthenorthwest · 23/05/2021 10:17

Our act was shit.

We usually have a party, we pick a flag out of a bag and then that's our country.

Then it's just drinking games. The one with the flag from the winning country is usually the most drunk.

CynsterBitch · 23/05/2021 10:17

@bagsofshite
Camp and fun is exactly why UK got no points though, JN was neither

MrsFin · 23/05/2021 10:17

She said something, one sentence, in two languages, and then said she didn't know which language was which.
When every single act and presenter in the show spoke perfect English.

Youngatheart00 · 23/05/2021 10:19

Radio 2 have been playing the song for weeks and weeks, so I wouldn’t say it’s grown on me but it is familiar and a bit of an earworm, but it doesn’t grab you after one listen, especially a rather weak live performance.

A thought though - how much of the ‘chart’ music in European countries is dominated by British or American acts anyway? They like our ‘BAU’ music so ignore us in the euros?

sashagabadon · 23/05/2021 10:20

I loved riverdance! In fact I am going to watch it on you tube again now to remind me how good it was. Peak Eurovision for me Smile

lubeybooby · 23/05/2021 10:20

The song wasn't good, lyrics terrible, tempo and composition were weird, and his voice isn't very nice either, and he looks a right state and the staging was shite, and everyone hates us

But if we can't recognise that and take the absolute piss out of ourselves and enjoy it anyway then we have no business being British!
