To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

Well all this bitching aside, it was actually nice to watch something last night which was just entertainment and almost no mention of covid.

Lordamighty · 23/05/2021 08:55

The UK will never do well in Eurovision because the UK music industry treats it like the joke it is. No credible artist would risk their career by entering Eurovision.
So treat it like a fun night of TV watching & don’t take the results seriously.

@SussexCharm2000

I say bring back Bucks Fizz for a retro / nostalgic 80s rerun. I reckon they would be up for it :)
They were the pioneers of getting your kit off , which is now almost obligatory!
prettybird · 23/05/2021 08:57

Norway has finished last the most times of any participating country and, along with Austria, has got nul points 4 times Shock.

I wonder if they complained that "everyone hates us"? Hmm

The UK has only got nul points twice - this year and 2003. Confused

While there might be a degree of "regional voting" (remember the times when Ireland used to give the UK a good vote and vice versa? Wink wonder why they don't any more Hmm), the reason for null points might, just possibly, because the song, staging and singing wasn't good enough Confused

The fact that the UK gets through automatically to the Grand Final in the current format probably doesn't help as the Semi-Finals help filter out the weaker songs although I personally think the Irish song should've gone through Wink

And Iceland were robbed Grin

@CounsellorTroi

Let Wales enter for UK next year. Let’s get a harp on there, some dragons, someone who can belt out a good one. We’d rock it.

Great idea. Send Bonnie Tyler.

We already sent her in 2013. She came in 19th.

We did well with blue in 2011, they came in 11th, Jade Ewen came in 5th in 2009 and Jessica Garlick came in 3rd in 2002.

When we send in a good song, we do well. This years was not a good song.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/05/2021 08:58

Let's send teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland next year. We can all block vote each other.

CynsterBitch · 23/05/2021 09:06

It was an awful songs and an awful performance, every time Graham mentioned UK voters couldn’t vote for him all I could think was no one will want to anyway.

CynsterBitch · 23/05/2021 09:11

@Shehasadiamondinthesky
As bad as the German entry was at least it was more memorable (and fun) than ours. If it was just between UK and Germany I would have voted Germany

Ahahaha.

You think Scotland would vote for England?!

Watchingthetelly · 23/05/2021 09:12

I deeply love the UK and almost gave a sympathy vote, but the song and performance were so shite that it didn’t deserve it.

Samcro · 23/05/2021 09:12

its not a song contest. its a political thing now.

Rewis · 23/05/2021 09:16

I haven't read the full thread bit how does gb choose the performer?

We have an open competition where anybody can enter and then panel of judges choose the top 10. Then it turns into a reality tv show and one gets dropped each week based on popular vote until we have a winner. Some performers are already known celebs and some unknown to general public. This way the public has chosen the winner. Not that we have done great over the years but we can't complain too much unlike if out public broadcast company was to choose.

That being said, the points are never fair. Countries vote for their neighbours regardless of their song. They don't give points to their nemesis, the nemesis can be a sports nemesis or a country actual political problems with. But I highly doubt brexit played a role. General public in Europe don't consider that in the Eurovision.

As for funding it. Gb and few others get to the final automatically because they are the biggest funders of EBU. Does gb pay extra or is it because as a bigger country you pay more?

aquashiv · 23/05/2021 09:16

Am I missing the point. Its not meant to be high brow.. Shite cheesy or demented rock stars that's the point surely. I've ever said oh yes there's a great song. Perhaps ABBA.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 23/05/2021 09:19

@toastofthetown

We didn't get any points because quite frankly we didn't deserve any. The song was forgettable, the singing bad, the staging boring; what did we expect? With Eurovision voting you vote for your favourite song. Can anyone saying this was political voting honestly say it was their favourite?

If you look at the songs we've done badly with recently they have all been bland. And in a competition where you need to be in top 10 to score points, bland won't ever win. If an entry were each country's 11th favourite act then they would score no points at all, despite not being the overall least popular act.

I doubt we'll learn from it though. We'll send another bland act next year and then look surprised when everyone votes for it, complain about political voting, then repeat the year after that. I felt for James though, he seemed a good guy and took it very well.

Agree with this. The song/staging/performance was bland, it didn't stand out. Germany's song was bad, but also memorable.
Sinoatrialnode · 23/05/2021 09:19

@WickedQueen

I’d sack it off on the basis that they didn’t play Ja Ja Ding Dong. I really thought they might!
😄

There are good songs and then there are Eurovision songs. Most places are not sending their greatest recording artists. Sending s musical masterpiece it but the point of the show. Foil hats however...
Anoisagusaris · 23/05/2021 09:21

Ireland didn’t even make it to the finals this year, and we used to be the queens of Eurovision! 😆 Nobody hates us (how could they, we’re fabulous 😇) - your argument doesn’t really stand up.

Firstbornunicorn · 23/05/2021 09:22

Don’t want nil pointe? Don’t send a shite song, sung by an awkward performer in an uncomfortable outfit.

misscockerspaniel · 23/05/2021 09:23

Come off it, it wasn't a good song and his tone was flat and boring Grin

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/05/2021 09:25

@Rewis they tried that before..or something similar and we ended up with Scooch lol..who also finished near the bottom.

It just seemed a bit bland. Which is a shame cause seemed a nice guy and could've done with a couple of points at least! Wonder if last year's song would've done any better.

GoldenLabbie · 23/05/2021 09:28

I really missed this thread last year, thanks OP. Nice to know things are getting back to normal 😂😉

MidnightMeltdown · 23/05/2021 09:28

I'm not convinced that this is down to Brexit. Half the countries aren't even in the EU. Even Australia gave us nothing!

SarahBellam · 23/05/2021 09:28

@Its90minutestonight

You could have Adele, Dua Lipa and Coldplay competing to represent the UK, and the great British public would still vote for Euro McEurovision. It's a lost cause.

Oh, and its NUL points, not nil points.

To be fair, I can’t imagine anything good coming out of that unholy alliance.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2021 09:29

Given what a cringe-fest it is, I tend to think it a badge of honour to get nul points.

Grin England. Null points 😎
