To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

iminthegarden · 23/05/2021 08:27

He was certainly the worst, his singing was terrible! How did he get picked?

Laufeythejust · 23/05/2021 08:28

It’s a bit embarrassing to be the only country with 0 points but it’s career suicide for any UK singer that wants to be taken seriously. I wish we would just go full fire saga, lion of love style fun- we need to stop taking it so serious.

JBaez · 23/05/2021 08:28

I hate it.
I don’t see the point at all if that is the best song the U.K. (or any of the other countries) could come up with.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 23/05/2021 08:29

Well it wasn't as bad as Germany Grin

jasjas1973 · 23/05/2021 08:32

But its not just Eurovision, England hasn't won a major football tournament since 1966.

We are hated the world over, clearly a vicious plot against our finest song writers/singers and footballers and its time we said enough is enough and sent in the navy.

Pyewackect · 23/05/2021 08:38

@Spasiba

We fund that rubbish?
Tell me this isn’t true. We spend money on this sad shit show ? .
Its90minutestonight · 23/05/2021 08:39

You could have Adele, Dua Lipa and Coldplay competing to represent the UK, and the great British public would still vote for Euro McEurovision. It's a lost cause.

Oh, and its NUL points, not nil points.

Abhannmor · 23/05/2021 08:40

@TellySavalashairbrush

We definitely need to bow out. £500k is £49000 too much for us to contribute to this political farce. Never been the same since Terry Wogan stopped hosting it anyway.
Yes , dear old Terry could always be relied upon for sarcastic comments about other hosts during the voting. Ireland 🇮🇪didn't even qualify. They obviously hate us cos Fr Ted. We must leave at once 😆

Well this is awkward.

The childish spirit of Brexit lives on. I’m sure brexiteers will love this so they get a chance to moan about Europe. You know the UK last won in 1997. So all this moaning that Europe has always hated us is just silly. Countries like France haven’t won since the 70s.

And sure politics can play a part but it also plays apart for British votes. Often Ireland and the UK give each other votes but that’s fine though we moan when other neighbours do the same.

CatsPyjama · 23/05/2021 08:43

We actually did well in 2017 with Lucie Jones, however I do think if we had sent in the dance version of that song and some good staging we would have done better. The dance version is great.

The song last night was shit, dull, it was singing by numbers. And he was flat.

The U.K. need to look at what other countries are doing instead of churning out the same middle of the road shite every year.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 23/05/2021 08:45

Never mind the discussion of our entry. What I never ever understand is the choice of the high scorers. They are never the countries that I think are good. Obviously I’m no expert but I’m always shocked. I thought France and Switzerland were awful but then everyone loved them.

SussexCharm2000 · 23/05/2021 08:46

I say bring back Bucks Fizz for a retro / nostalgic 80s rerun. I reckon they would be up for it :)

Abhannmor · 23/05/2021 08:46

Agree Lemon Roses. Italy won because heavy rock is very popular in Eastern Europe, the Balkans etc. I suppose there is a Eurovision style , France and Portugal had lovely songs , well sung , But didn't fit the template.

SussexCharm2000 · 23/05/2021 08:47

My Italian colleague said they have been following the Italian Entry for 18 months. They are an emerging band with a following already.

toastofthetown · 23/05/2021 08:47

We didn't get any points because quite frankly we didn't deserve any. The song was forgettable, the singing bad, the staging boring; what did we expect? With Eurovision voting you vote for your favourite song. Can anyone saying this was political voting honestly say it was their favourite?

If you look at the songs we've done badly with recently they have all been bland. And in a competition where you need to be in top 10 to score points, bland won't ever win. If an entry were each country's 11th favourite act then they would score no points at all, despite not being the overall least popular act.

I doubt we'll learn from it though. We'll send another bland act next year and then look surprised when everyone votes for it, complain about political voting, then repeat the year after that. I felt for James though, he seemed a good guy and took it very well.

CounsellorTroi · 23/05/2021 08:47

Let Wales enter for UK next year. Let’s get a harp on there, some dragons, someone who can belt out a good one. We’d rock it.

Great idea. Send Bonnie Tyler.

DrMorbius · 23/05/2021 08:48

@Duckypoohs

Which song of ours was brilliant but received nil points or deserved to win but didn't? Because I don't remember any.
Ooh Aah..Just a little bit, by Gina in1996 came 8th with 77 points.

Then went on to be a global best seller, including in the US.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 23/05/2021 08:51

Things that don’t rile Brexiteers:
60k on renovations
100m on lawyers fees to protect the Grenfell Murderers
4 BILLION on undocumented Covid contracts

Things that rile Brexiteers:
500k to those bloody Europeans!!!

Abhannmor · 23/05/2021 08:51

Watched for the first time in decades. I didn't understand the format tbh. What happened to sharing your points out among the contestants? Why do some acts miss the semis? Bring back Katie Boyle en francaise!

sandgrown · 23/05/2021 08:51

I think our entry didn’t win because he was not wearing Lycra or glitter .

NatMoz · 23/05/2021 08:52

The UK song made number 41 in the UK charts at the time it was released. If the UK don't even like the song enough for it to be in the top 10, then how on earth would Europe think it was a great song?

MargosKaftan · 23/05/2021 08:52

Look, we send something a bit dull and safe that people on radio 2 like, and it does shit.

But the viewing figures are amazing for the BBC, so in reality it ends up being cheap tv for the number of viewers they get, so completely justifiable.

I like that we send a shit song every year and buy our way into the finals. We don't take it seriously and just take the piss out of the whole thing.

That said, I love the idea of Bonnie Tyler with a dragon next year.

MyOctopusFeature · 23/05/2021 08:53

If you imagine for one moment all entries were anonymous until after voting, you would have a pure song competition.

Now, think about the songs. Is Eurovision really worth holding at all?

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 23/05/2021 08:53

@SussexCharm2000

Would be really risky.

Can you imagine if they got no points?

Brexiteers everywhere would have brain aneurysms. The NHS would not cope.
