To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

And all the previous years? I didn’t vote for the UK and it wasn’t because of Covid or Brexit. It’s because the song was... not good.

WickedQueen · 23/05/2021 00:10

I’d sack it off on the basis that they didn’t play Ja Ja Ding Dong. I really thought they might!

ATieLikeRichardGere · 23/05/2021 00:16

I think it’s time for Eurovisbrexit. We don’t belong.

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 23/05/2021 00:16

Does everyone else hate Germany, Spain and the Netherlands as well? I missed that memo. And I don’t think that Azerbaijan, Norway or Switzerland give a monkeys about Brexit.

I do think that the Big 5 (plus the previous winners) have a problem. Because their songs aren’t in the semi finals they’re significantly less familiar to the voting audience, and also that bit less rehearsed, especially for the jury performance. A really memorable performance and/or one with buzz around it will cut through like Italy and Francs did this year, or Germany did with Satellite, but a mediocre song that hasn’t been in the semis is more likely to sink utterly without trace than one which has been in the semis and has had a chance to build up a bit more recognition - just enough to get the odd vote here and there.

DonnaDonna01 · 23/05/2021 00:19

Definitely sack it off, why stay where we obviously aren’t wanted.

Spasiba · 23/05/2021 00:19

We fund that rubbish?

UrAWizHarry · 23/05/2021 00:20

I don't think it's actually all that money in the grand scheme of things, as far as google claims it's only around 500k or so that the UK actually contributes.

Seeing our crap entry getting zero points is definately worth that.

TellySavalashairbrush · 23/05/2021 00:25

We definitely need to bow out. £500k is £49000 too much for us to contribute to this political farce. Never been the same since Terry Wogan stopped hosting it anyway.

DeadButDelicious · 23/05/2021 00:25

It's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts. Grin

aquashiv · 23/05/2021 00:26

It's a pile of shite. Ireland were sick to death of winning...costs a fortune to host.

Definately · 23/05/2021 00:27

UK just needs to produce a banger like Euphoria and stop sending nice but safe and a bit dreary songs that haven't a hope.

Duckypoohs · 23/05/2021 00:29

He deserved nil points it was cringy and fucking awful, it was embarrassing. Why send a fat nondescript bloke singing a, shite song off key who was dressed as the back seat of a Ford fiesta???

thecapitalsunited · 23/05/2021 00:30

I’m pretty sure we send shit acts on purpose so we don’t have to pay to host it. And because the bbc understand that we love nothing more than moaning about how we were robbed.

SpindleWhorl · 23/05/2021 00:30

Flo Rider made a tit of himself as well.

The Italy winners may well be investigated for 'partying' a wee bit too hard on camera.

UrAWizHarry · 23/05/2021 00:30

This is the thing. The song was shit, the performance of it was shit and he looked like he had wandered in from a Wetherspoons.

Maybe, just maybe, that was why he didn't get any votes.

NerrSnerr · 23/05/2021 00:31

A huge amount to of Brits watch it that's why they get so much money from the BBC. One of the highest rated programmes of the year. Most people who watch it know we won't win (or get points) but watch it because it's a fun, surreal and entertaining evening.

SpindleWhorl · 23/05/2021 00:33

We may as well send Vic Reeves singing something in the club style, and at least consciously rip the piss out of it.

UrbanRambler · 23/05/2021 00:33

@DonnaDonna01

Agreed. I've been saying the same thing for years. Even prior to Brexit, the hostility towards the UK meant that we could never win, even if we had the best song by a mile.

On the other hand, it's not all about who wins. Lots of people seem to enjoy watching it, so perhaps it should just be viewed as a bit of harmless fun, best watched with alcohol.

Duckypoohs · 23/05/2021 00:34

We could win if we sent a decent song.

Blossomtoes · 23/05/2021 00:36

@Spasiba

We fund that rubbish?
No, we don’t. The winning country funds it the following year. Italy’s fucked in 2022!
Ilovemaisie · 23/05/2021 00:36

We 'fund it' because the UK is part of the European Broadcasting Union which we pay to be part of. If we left the EBU we would lose access to shared things such as news reports and sports. If we stopped entering the Eurovision Song Contest we would still be paying our EBU membership so we might as well enter.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 23/05/2021 00:37

Guys it’s not the song. People really hate the UK that much I’m afraid!

Duckypoohs · 23/05/2021 00:38

Which song of ours was brilliant but received nil points or deserved to win but didn't? Because I don't remember any.

SnapDragonCat · 23/05/2021 00:38

If we managed to clone the 60s Beatles and enter them we still wouldn't win. Love the idea of entering Vic Reeves singing in the club style Grin

Duckypoohs · 23/05/2021 00:39

It really is the song.
