Or do you know someone that is? I'm curious how many real life people are actually on it.

I'm not a journo, the Daily mail is a shit rag.

@SofiaMichelle Read the full thread. There are some similarities in the way that Only Fans operates and the MLM schemes. I didn't know either until this thread, it's been truly eye opening.

The fact women on this thread are all tying themselves up in knots to prove they are empowered, or not empowered, just goes to prove the patriarchy have played an absolute number on us.

HopingForRainbow2021 · 21/05/2021 22:55

I really don’t get why so many are keen to pair OF with MLM. They are nothing alike. I have been on OF for two years and I do okay out of it. It’s in no way like MLM for me or for anyone else I know that has a presence on it. I can’t stand MLM.

Aloethere · 21/05/2021 23:17

Pointing out that women are damaging each other by pulling each other apart due to a job is not a misogynistic comment.

It's not just a job though. The girl I know who does it has had multiple plastic surgeries which she calls a 'business investment', what other 'job' leads you to do this? Her naked body is all over the internet, videos of her masturbating are all over the internet after her OnlyFans content was 'leaked' but it is just a 'job'. She actively recruits young women selling promos at 300quid a time, selling her lifestyle to 18yr olds. It is grim. There is no other word to describe it.

I doubt there are many women here who say they think it is just work and empowering would help their daughters start an OnlyFans if they came to them and said I'm broke so I am going to start filming myself wanking to pay the bills. I cannot see what is empowering about that.

I don't need to read your thread.

Just because someone has said it's MLM related doesn't make it fact.

TedImgoingmad · 21/05/2021 23:56

It works as a type of MLM. OF content providers can make money via the referral scheme - anyone new signing up to OF using their sign up codes - earning bonuses off incoming content providers they draw in this way. The internet is full of MLM type ads like, 'Wow! Local Mum Makes £3000 A Month Doing Only Fans In Her Spare Time!'? The top 1% of earners on OF earn 75% of the total income generated by the site. That's not by churning out content alone. Classic pyramid.

Think about it. Why are content providers encouraged to recruit? Why would someone want to recruit their own competition? In what other industry would this work as a business model?

In order to recruit, the downsides of OF have to be downplayed by the recruiters to entice newbies in. That's classic MLM tactics. It's all new houses, handbags and holidays in Dubai.

Sounds like a rumour. I'd never heard it was a pyramid scheme if anything I'd imagine you want the subscribers to stay with you. @HopingForRainbow2021 Do you show your face or do you disguise yourself, wear a wig? glasses? Do your neighbours know? Are you worried your DC will hear in the future

ChaToilLeam · 22/05/2021 00:15

It’s grubby, damaging and exploitative. Damn right I’m judging. I had hoped that in the 21st century, we could do better than this.

@DrawingPins

I don't know if it's on Only Fans, but I know somebody who earns money reading out steamy books. I only know because she asked me to read a bit of Jilly Cooper out so she could copy my accent. Confused

I can see how there's a market though — I was on University Challenge, and you'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many men commented on my voice and appearance on Twitter/Facebook/Youtube. When somebody said they'd pay to hear me read the phonebook, I'm pretty sure it was hyperbole, but perhaps I could have paid off my student loan doing that! It's very much the thin end of the wedge though, I know.

Have you thought about reading audio books?
HopingForRainbow2021 · 22/05/2021 06:22

@EmeraldShamrock blimey - attacked for even offering advice. I have no interest in ‘recruiting’ anyone - and I never have. My income literally does come from churning out content. While I’m sure there are some at the top end that exploit the referral system, I genuinely believe it’s a tiny minority. When I joined it wasn’t via a referral either.

Oysterbabe · 22/05/2021 09:30

Why do people keep crapping on about MLMs? It's nothing like an MLM. Yes you try and recruit subscribers, that's how you make money, but there's zero benefit in getting other women to join and set up accounts.

SofiaMichelle · 22/05/2021 12:07

@TedImgoingmad

No. It's not MLM and it's not a pyramid.

MLM means multi-level marketing. There is NO multi-level marketing system here.

A referral scheme is NOT the same as MLM.

Pyramid schemes and MLM pass profits through the network from multiple levels below up to the op of the pyramid.

A referral scheme stops at the level of the person who made the referral.

There are referral schemes for energy suppliers, Ocado, even a car dealer I know.

Are you saying they're MLM too?

EmeraldShamrock · 22/05/2021 12:30

You weren't attacked fgs.
It was a laughing emoji.
I asked questions about it. ⏬

So depressing. The oldest profession lives on in its many guises.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/05/2021 13:12

@IJustWantSomeBees

Forgot to add: no sick leave, no maternity leave, no job security, etc.
same as anyone else that's self employed then?

I think your previous comment was about no pension - they can choose to invest some of their earnings in a pension?

MissScotland101 · 22/05/2021 13:36

@krustykittens

"Exactly and frankly, without sex workers then there would be far more rapes and assaults than there is now, disgusting but true and men are the issue, not women."

This is a myth. Rape and sexual assault are about power and control, not sexual gratification. It's not poor men raping women because they can't afford to rent a body for half an hour, is it? Rapists come from every part of society, what they all have in common is contempt for women. I cannot believe this shit is still being spouted in 2021.

Not always, I honestly do believe that there would be more sexual crimes if there wasn’t any escorts, paying for sex is the only way that certain men can get sex.
Ussernayme · 22/05/2021 13:39

Do you know what pisses me off no end? That many women campaigned for the end of lads mags and page 3, presumably hoping that the next generation of girls would grow up without having to encounter images of scantily clad women displaying themselves for men every time they went into a shop. Only for other women to insist on exploiting themselves on bloody sites like Only Fans. I absolutely hate the normalisation of pornographic images and the insistence that if it's women doing it then it's OK. Well, it still isn't OK for the young women who are growing up in a society that insists that something like Only Fans is a legitimate choice. I despair, thank god I'm old enough to have had those formative years without the internet as it is now.

nevernotstruggling · 22/05/2021 13:40
@wildeverose I’m enormously concerned about the normalisation of young women being paid by men, to take their clothes off/perform sex acts on demand, for their titillation. If that makes me a nasty person, I’m OK with that.
Exactly this

nevernotstruggling · 22/05/2021 13:41
@IJustWantSomeBees
"This pushing and grooming of teenage girls and young women to become pornstars and do sex work is not for female benefit, it is for male benefit. Men are the House in this society and the House always wins"

100% WSS. It's all very well to say good on them making themselves some money but it all contributes to a pornified culture that is absolutely toxic for all girls and young women growing up in it.
Yes and this. Glad lots see right through it

Completely agree with this too. I spent years turning over lags mags in supermarkets so my children didn't see women in just knickers on covers and think that was normal
IJustWantSomeBees · 22/05/2021 13:44

same as anyone else that's self employed then?

So? That fact that other self employed people put themselves in precarious financial positions does not mean it's a good idea to encourage girls/women to do so. Plus, those three comments were added on to my original three - other self employed people won't have a gap on their CV and will in fact be building their CV through their work. Other self-employed people will also not have to live with the constant risk of getting fired and losing their livelihood if they take on a job outside of their chosen self employment field.

I would also look into the death rates in other self employed fields - I think you'll find that sex workers have some of the highest death rates on this planet. Are other self-employed people as likely as pornstars are to be stalked? To recieve rape and death threats? To be doxxed and harrassed? I don't think so. Further, are other self-employed people as likely as sex workers to have permanent physical injury due to their work, such as a prolapsed anus or a prolapsed vagina? I wasn't aware that being a web developer or an independent accountant was such risky business.

I think your previous comment was about no pension - they can choose to invest some of their earnings in a pension?

Some girls/women may choose to invest in a private pension, but they aren't contributing to their state pension and realistically do you really think that the swathes of teenage girls on only fans are all pension-savvy? The normalisation of girls and women being sex workers will lead to female citizens being disproportionately less financially stable in comparison to male citizens (like we already are) and further our treatment as second-class citizens. You must look at the bigger picture here and how this will effect women as a class, not just the few boss babes who manage to make it.

nevernotstruggling · 22/05/2021 13:44

I wonder if it will become a question in the job centre....but have you tried onlyfans?
