She’s just won Best British Female and Best Album at the Brits- beating the phenomenally talented (and criminally underrated) Jessie Ware, whose latest album is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve heard her last two big singles, Physical and that one before it - Don’t Show Up I think it’s called? They’re just crap. They’re boring. They’ve got no real melody, the songs don’t go anywhere, they do nothing to suggest her voice is anything exceptional.

So why the hell is she being feted as the best female talent this country has to offer right now?

The Brits has always been shit.

JackieTheFart · 12/05/2021 00:21

Well I’ve never even heard of Jessie Ware, so maybe she needs better PR.

Ponoka7 · 12/05/2021 00:27

It's all just a matter of opinion. I find Jessie Ware very dated.

Beatinghearts · 12/05/2021 00:28

I really like her she’s a very beautiful and talented woman.

Beatinghearts · 12/05/2021 00:28

But each to their own I guess. I do also like Jessie ware

funinthesun19 · 12/05/2021 00:33

Oh I love Dua Lipa!
I can’t say I’ve ever heard of Jessie Ware.

Blacktothepink · 12/05/2021 00:35

Never heard of her

Babyroobs · 12/05/2021 00:35

I'm feeling very old this evening, I've never heard of half the nominated people/ bands.

kittenkipping · 12/05/2021 00:37

I don't love dua lepa, but haven't heard of Jessie ware. I'm a parent if teens..... it says something that one of the named artists you mention i "know" - if the kids don't "ship" it then it's not "good"

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 12/05/2021 00:37

It's her time.
She's very beautiful,talented and popular.
The brits is like a popularity contest.

PasstheBucket89 · 12/05/2021 00:37

YANBU i find her quite awkward looking and not anything special

stayathomer · 12/05/2021 00:41

I didn't think she was amazing but actually now ima huge fan you've just programmed yourself not to like her. She's got a few songs that seem more similar to each other but after that she has quite a range and actually musically some of the songs are extremely well done!

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 00:43

I don’t find her particularly attractive. Certainly not when she’s dressed as a drag queen Amy Winehouse lookalike whose skirt got caught in the car door and tore off.

Is she that talented though? Her songs don’t show any vocal range. I’ve seen snippets of her live (Glastonbury footage mostly) and she wasn’t a great live singer or performer.

The Brits has always been shit.

That’s certainly true. Still think Craig David was robbed.

I didn't have an opinion either way until I saw her live at a music festival (remember those?). She was absolutely fantastic

stayathomer · 12/05/2021 00:50

Ps her looks have nothing to do with the thread (and I'd love to look like her anyway!)

Enough4me · 12/05/2021 00:52

I like Jessie Ware, but Dua Lipa's songs are more memorable.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 12/05/2021 00:55

I've heard her in a studio live and she is a fantastic singer, really naturally gifted.

I don't have footage of that but this gives you an idea. I think so anyway!

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 00:56

True, but I wasn’t the person who brought them up.

I like Jessie Ware, but Dua Lipa's songs are more memorable.

So is Baby Shark. Doesn’t mean it’s better.

I used to really like Dua Lipa but I do agree that her latest stuff has been quite boring and repetitive.

Womencanlift · 12/05/2021 01:17

I have only heard of Jessie because she does a podcast (I assume it’s the same person?) and she did an interview with Kylie

Had no that she was a singer. So for that reason I wouldn’t have been surprised if she won a Brit. They do have a history of giving awards to randoms that no one has heard of

Dua Lipa is a major label priority act. She's hugely popular with young people (girls and women especially) and is considered photogenic.

The Brits aren't the Mercury Music Prize - it's not a case of identifying the best musical talent.

The Brits tend to be the major label's way of getting a boost for priority acts. It's been a harder year (cue tiny violin) with the pandemic. So they're going to look after their own. Universal Music had 15 nominations, Warner and Sony had 14. So called "indie" labels? 10.

It doesn't surprise me therefore that if you're wanting to look cool and better representative, you do it in the nominations.

But the winner ensures that the big fish in the industry stay winning so to speak.

Cuntryhouse · 12/05/2021 02:17

Brits winners have always been those who made the record industry the most money. End of.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/05/2021 02:23

Sha has the right look. She's beautiful, she has a good stylist who's keeping her on trend, and even the songs that are a bit boring are catchy so they stick in your head. I don't really like any of her songs, but then I'm very hard to please when it comes to music, and I'm not a massive mainstream pop song fan.

OwlBeThere · 12/05/2021 02:25

Music is entirely subjective. I find Beyoncé boring as hell.
I think Dua Lipa is good, not my thing really but it’s solid pop music. Jessie Ware has a nice voice but it’s very retro. Neither are great imo.

Furries · 12/05/2021 02:25

I’m nearly 50. I’m beyond the point of looking for “cool” or “relative” or “rebellious” in my music.

When I’m driving through country lanes with the radio on, I either like what I hear or I don’t like it. I’d say 80% of her tracks I’ve enjoyed. I think her earlier stuff was better, but that’s by the by.

I don’t pay much attention to awards given. As I said, if I like a track then I like it.
