To just not get the hype around Dua Lipa?

She’s just won Best British Female and Best Album at the Brits- beating the phenomenally talented (and criminally underrated) Jessie Ware, whose latest album is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve heard her last two big singles, Physical and that one before it - Don’t Show Up I think it’s called? They’re just crap. They’re boring. They’ve got no real melody, the songs don’t go anywhere, they do nothing to suggest her voice is anything exceptional.

So why the hell is she being feted as the best female talent this country has to offer right now?

OP posts:

Mabel (who i just found out is the daughter of Neneh Cherry is great though, but not British)

yes she is - her dad is Cameron McVey (british producer)
TanteRose · 12/05/2021 02:43

I mean, Mabel is both great and British! Grin

TanteRose · 12/05/2021 02:45

and for the record, I like Dua Lipa, and find Jessie Ware a bit dull - sorry OP!

newnortherner111 · 12/05/2021 06:57

Little Mix winning anything and the awful 'banter' with Jack Whitehall was the worst aspect of the show. Agree with the OP that Dua Lipa is not a great talent.

joystir59 · 12/05/2021 07:09

I'm 63 and just went to YouTube to listen to 'I'm levitating' and I really like Dua Lipa, full of party vibe, light energy, clear voice. Off to listen to Jessie Ware now and will report back.

ConstanceGracy · 12/05/2021 07:10

Most people on there are overhyped.
I hate these award shows as it’s just story after story in the news. I’m not interested in it but can’t get away from it!

joystir59 · 12/05/2021 07:13

Jessie Ware ... I found 'Please' a bit boring.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 12/05/2021 07:36

For any Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans...She is dating/possibly engaged to Yolanda's son.

And that is is the extent of my input 😅

@Cuntryhouse

Brits winners have always been those who made the record industry the most money. End of.

This.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 12/05/2021 07:58

Just took a look at the British "The Winners" list on Spotify. Can't say I feel any of them are seeped in talent.

AndreaMarteau · 12/05/2021 08:04

Is it though? Most of the nominations and winners are usually people I've never heard of and it's been like that since I was a teen and really into music. The only true popular vote is the one that's voted for by the 'people' and not the industry.

I remember the year Seasick Steve won big. I can't imagine he's out there (or was at the time of the vote) making millions for his record company or even had a huge fanbase. I also agree Craig David should have won (and I'm not a fan of his). The whole thing is odd. It's a massive ceremony that's on national tv, but the acts are sometimes obscure, niche artists. Kind of like they've sold out but they're still trying to prove their music cred.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2021 08:13

Music is entirely subjective.

This.

StCharlotte · 12/05/2021 08:26

As someone upthread said "it's her time". I was wfh last year and switched from our normal talk radio station which was become depressing and scary to Radio 2 and Dua Lipa was on a LOT. I didn't like "Physical" the first time I heard it but then I was hooked. All her songs are "bops" (as the kids call it Grin) and were very cheering in a dark time. So leave her alone. I'm 109 by the way and I also really like Jessie Ware but I don't think they're comparable.

Ginuwine · 12/05/2021 08:26

@AndreaMarteau

Hmm I'm not so sure that if you, @AndreaMarteau have never heard of the a acts, it automatically makes them "obscure".

This years Brit nominations in the major categories were filled with so called A list / recognisable names.

Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, Bruce Springsteen, The Weeknd.

If you haven't heard of those (Springsteen aside) then I would respectfully say that contemporary pop music clearly isn't your thing and that's fine.

If by "haven't heard of them" you're referring to the slew of nominations for UK hip hop acts such as Headie One, AJ Tracey, Young T and Bugsy, Pa Salieu.. then yes that was a sea change.

I think however the reasoning was clear:

• UK chart music is clearly more dominated by UK rap. Any exemption or ignoring of this in the nominations would be bizarre at best, or perhaps even racist at worst
• Like all ceremonies the Brits is under a microscope for inclusion stuff - ignore these things at your peril etc
• These acts are actually good and we're in a peak phase for this music

Quirrelsotherface · 12/05/2021 08:30

YANBU i find her quite awkward looking and not anything special

Twice this week there's been threads with people attacking famous women for their looks.

Anyone else like to see a picture of some of these posters who refer to someone like Dua Lipa as nothing special? Grin

Dripping with jealousy.

Maybughell · 12/05/2021 08:33

YANBU, I honestly don’t get the hype surrounding her. She’s absolutely massive across the globe now....why? She did a radio 1 live lounge a couple of weeks ago and all I thought was...meh. She’s okay, but I was driving along thinking there are so much better singers out there who haven’t got a hope of getting a record deal. Her voice isn’t strong.

And Jessie Ware...love, love, love!!!

Onthetrain75 · 12/05/2021 08:37

YABU

I love Dua Lipa. I am in total awe of how she can be so talented and cool at such a young age. I’m 46. I also love Jessie Ware. Even my kids have to tell me to play something else.,.”not Dua Lipa AGAIN mum!”

ImprobablePuffin · 12/05/2021 08:38

@AngeloMysterioso

I don’t find her particularly attractive. Certainly not when she’s dressed as a drag queen Amy Winehouse lookalike whose skirt got caught in the car door and tore off.

Is she that talented though? Her songs don’t show any vocal range. I’ve seen snippets of her live (Glastonbury footage mostly) and she wasn’t a great live singer or performer.

The Brits has always been shit.

That’s certainly true. Still think Craig David was robbed.

Haven't rtft yet but what has her looks got to do with it? If you don't like her music fair enough but why slate how she looks?!
AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 08:49

I didn’t bring up her looks.

I've heard of 4/5 of those! Maybe I'm not as old as I think 😂😂

SoupDragon · 12/05/2021 08:50

@AngeloMysterioso

I didn’t bring up her looks.
You still slated them though.
MoChridhe · 12/05/2021 08:57

I like Dua Lipa's music and I think she is gorgeous. Her father even more so.

SummaLuvin · 12/05/2021 09:03

You still slated them though.

This! About OP (and others) commenting on Dua Lipas physical appearance.

It makes me especially sad that this is on a forum predominantly with parents. Are these the ideals you are all passing onto your sons and daughters? Women's value in her job is her beauty? By all means discuss music and musical preferences, but don't bring looks into it.

It is irrelevant to me that Due is quite clearly stunning, that doesn't give anyone the right to fire cheap shots, and does not mean she won't have insecurities.

Youdoyoutoday · 12/05/2021 09:05

I like dua lipa, I don't go out of my way to listen to her but will certainly have a sing along when she comes on and will go as far to embarrass my 7 yo by dancing badly. However, I've never heard of Jessie Ware googled her and don't recognise any of her photos or songs.
