To just not get the hype around Dua Lipa?

She’s just won Best British Female and Best Album at the Brits- beating the phenomenally talented (and criminally underrated) Jessie Ware, whose latest album is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve heard her last two big singles, Physical and that one before it - Don’t Show Up I think it’s called? They’re just crap. They’re boring. They’ve got no real melody, the songs don’t go anywhere, they do nothing to suggest her voice is anything exceptional.

So why the hell is she being feted as the best female talent this country has to offer right now?

I think I’m just too old to get it. The songs I’ve heard just washed over me and I can’t remember them at all - but that applies to most of the charts now Grin She’s beautiful though.

Ginuwine · 12/05/2021 09:07

@Maybughell

YANBU, I honestly don’t get the hype surrounding her. She’s absolutely massive across the globe now....why? She did a radio 1 live lounge a couple of weeks ago and all I thought was...meh. She’s okay, but I was driving along thinking there are so much better singers out there who haven’t got a hope of getting a record deal. Her voice isn’t strong.

And Jessie Ware...love, love, love!!!

There are literally thousands of better singers in the UK alone than Lipa.

But that's never the point!

Look at any X Factor etc to see the Beverley Knight sound a likes, beautiful talented women who can sing all the octaves and make reading the phone book sound like Aretha.

A pure voice alone rarely if ever make it in the industry.

Dua Lipa whether for right or wrong is what they call the "whole package".

She is photogenic, tall but curvy in places, has a confident, fun and outré personality and a striking look (yes I've heard plenty say she's not "beautiful" but come on - she has the face and looks to sell music. It's proven).

But forget all that - she has one thing that ensures success. Her voice is instantly recognisable.

In the same way that Rihanna has "that" vocal tone that cuts through well in a mix. Both aren't strong singers but by god you know it's them on a record.

It helps.

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 09:09

I slated her outfit choice (and I stand by that comment, yikes Dua sack your stylist!) but not her looks. I said I don’t find her particularly attractive and I don’t, but I didn’t say she was ugly.

@Blacktothepink

Never heard of her
Nor me !.
VienneseWhirligig · 12/05/2021 09:11

She's got cross generational appeal too. My parents (in their early 70s) saw her perform at the Singapore grand prix a couple of years ago and has her music on Spotify now. It's catchy music and she's attractively packaged.

Needsleep32 · 12/05/2021 09:11

I think Celeste was robbed.

Ginuwine · 12/05/2021 09:16

@Needsleep32

I think Celeste was robbed.

Robbed of a decent A&R and management you mean.

She feels like this year's Corinne Bailey Rae or Jorja Smith.

Will be forgotten in five years unless someone guides her to make less anodyne material.

supermoonrising · 12/05/2021 09:17

She's super hot. There's not much to it than that. That's all you need the last twenty years, doubly so since the likes of Youtube/Instagram etc took over the world ten years ago.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 12/05/2021 09:19

I’m not sure why individuals are arguing that ‘they’ve never heard of her’ or ‘she’s a crap singer’ and thinking that matters. It’s all just industry bollocks, like most awards things and @Ginuwine has given some interesting insights as to why the winners won. It’s marketing and money.

Hyperion100 · 12/05/2021 09:20

Jessie Ware's lastest album "Whats your pleasure?" is an absolute masterpiece. I urge everyone to listen to it!

If pop stardom required a good vocal range (or even being able to carry a tune), no one would ever of heard of Madonna.

Dua Lipa's voice is fine for a pop star IME - certainly no worse than many of her competitors. I expect her more recent songs are samey because her management and label are pushing her to churn out hits quickly while her star is rising. Sadly that pressure is often very harmful for the individual, as well as their musical credibility. I hope she is strong enough to withstand it.

aSofaNearYou · 12/05/2021 09:30

I think it makes a lot of sense to honour the big acts of the year with the wins tbh, the feeling is that these songs/artists contributed in a big way to the "soundtrack of the year". That can't really be said of Jessie Ware, even if her album was good. It's always very underwhelming when someone wins an award and the overriding feeling is "who?"

If you want to give a nod to artists that weren't really that well known and didn't have much of an impact, but that just made a really good record, amongst the nominations or winning awards like best new artist makes infinite sense. For "album of the year", well, Dua Lipa was easily the most fitting.

User135644 · 12/05/2021 09:30

The Brit Awards are garbage. It's manufactured rubbish.

Dua Lipa is a good pop star. Nothing amazing.

Excilente · 12/05/2021 09:34

The Brits are industry awards, they're about who is popular, not who's got the best voice.

FTR, i like Dua Lipa, never heard of Jesse Ware though, couldn't name a single one of her songs, so i'm not sure why she would deserve a Brit over one of the biggest selling, most recognisable British Female Talents in an award thats voted for by the industry moguls.

youngestisapsycho · 12/05/2021 09:35

Just googled her dad.... Woh!

ElphabaTWitch · 12/05/2021 09:39

All popular music sounds awful to me. Same song same lyrics same bland blah melody. It’s all awful.

@AngeloMysterioso

I didn’t bring up her looks.
But you sure went further in slating them than the person who brought them up.

“She started it” doesn’t get you out of it!

IntermittentParps · 12/05/2021 09:51

I don't get it either. I find her music unmemorable; autotuned and generic. My DP, who is into some quite 'challenging' and obscure music, really likes her, which I find a bit baffling.

ImprobablePuffin · 12/05/2021 09:52

@AngeloMysterioso

I didn’t bring up her looks.
Does it matter? You're still slating her looks whether you started it or not.
LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 12/05/2021 09:57

In what sense is she 'awkward-looking'? If someone 'looks awkward', it means they look uncomfortable in a particular situation; how can someone's looks be described as 'awkward'? It's like 'clunky' and 'grabby' - I see them everywhere on here and they're such bullshit words.
This thread has reminded me of how excellent Neneh Cherry was, though.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 12/05/2021 10:01

@youngestisapsycho

Just googled her dad.... Woh!
Yeah, he’s absolutely my type.
AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 10:01

Again, I slated her outfit choice. I didn’t slate her looks.

Unless “I don’t find her particularly attractive” is now considered slating.

Dua Lipa's outfit last night was comedy gold. She is normal looking when not tricked up. No idea on her singing abilities, the identikit millenials all sound the same to me.

Her political and racial opinions are not very pleasant to say the least.
