She’s just won Best British Female and Best Album at the Brits- beating the phenomenally talented (and criminally underrated) Jessie Ware, whose latest album is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve heard her last two big singles, Physical and that one before it - Don’t Show Up I think it’s called? They’re just crap. They’re boring. They’ve got no real melody, the songs don’t go anywhere, they do nothing to suggest her voice is anything exceptional.

So why the hell is she being feted as the best female talent this country has to offer right now?

Lipa was happy to share some seriously nasty anti semitism on her Twitter feed last year - perhaps she is one of the ' just helps out when they are busy' part time racists. There's a lot of it about. No. Not the same as being against Israeli government policy.

Don't care what she looks like, she didn't have any contribution to that beyond silly clothes.

IntermittentParps · 12/05/2021 15:48

murbblurb, I wasn't aware of that and of course I make a distinction between criticism of Israeli government policy and anti
semitism.

I like her. Her songs are catchy and upbeat, there will always be a place for this kind of music. She hits the spot perfectly for her target audience. I mean I heard the mighty Dave Grohl saying his daughter thought it the coolest thing ever that Dua was on a track with her dad (Live Lounge Stars cover of Times like These). No matter your personal opinion or musical preferences, she is getting it so right at the moment.

She is so young yet and perhaps still to find where she wants to sit long term in the industry and that’s ok, it’s natural progression. She is also stunning, fitting in beautifully along side her boyfriends supermodel sisters, the Hadid girls. She is a British female artist and ought to be championed, not torn down.

YABU. Jessie Ware is OK, but Dua Lipa is better. (IMO.)

It is all subjective of course. I like Dua, and love some of her songs, and think Jessie's music is drony and dull.

IMO, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Lewis Capaldi, and a few other HUGELY popular singers from the last decade, who have sold 100s of millions of songs, are ALL overrated. They're OK and all, but waaaaaay overrated.

I also like Little Mix, and some of their songs are pretty decent, but I was shocked they won the Brit for the Best Group. To me, they are a handful of pretty girls who are reasonable singers, and not worthy of the Best Group Award. But some people on Twitter are crying with joy that they have won! Confused

Dua lipa has lots of good songs. I'm really not the target audience but I actually have a playlist of her songs because I enjoy them.

phoenixrosehere · 12/05/2021 20:18

I really like a lot of Dua Lipa's songs.
I had to Google Jessie Ware and I listened to a few of her songs on YouTube and they did nothing for me so I would have the opposite opinion to you on the award.
You can't please everyone.

Agree. I didn’t know who Jessie Ware is until I put her into Spotify. I recognised one song “Say You Love Me” and the rest sounds like stuff I already have in my library but have to be in a certain mood to listen to.

I’ve been listening to Dua Lipa since she first came on the scene. I still listen to the acoustic version of “Scared to be Lonely” (way better than the radio version) and am addicted to the remix of Levitating with Madonna and Missy Elliott (not a fan of the original) and Physical. A lot of her music is great to work out to and put you in a good mood which is heavily needed right now.

Seriously? The Little Mix girls all.have fantastic voices, particularly Perrie. Better than Dua Lipa, I'd say.

Still, can't say I care about The Brits. I'm too old Grin

I really like her. Great gym music. I remember listening to her album and thinking 'this is what Sophie Ellis Bextor wishes she did'.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 12/05/2021 20:42

I love Dua Lipa! I'm down with the kids.

Little Mix are all incredibly naturally gifted singers. Lots of vocal coaches use their live performances as teaching tools particularly when focusing on harmonies and blends.

I don't know if you've heard anything they've sung live or stripped back but they are very talented and respected in the industry accordingly.

They're also refreshingly normal and nice in person which is always a positive!

RaininSummer · 12/05/2021 20:45

I haven't heard of either of the singers (I assume) mentioned. Thought duo lipa was going to be some clever kind of lipstick or possibly cosmetic surgery.

Nah, I think Sophie Ellis Bextor is much happier being a cult act and singing about what she wants:

I love Dua Lipa.
Never heard of Jessie Ware,so i googled her.And im listening to her on youtube.

Shes a lovely voice but,Dua to me has the edge. Her voice is instantly recognisable.

And Little Mix are brilliant singers and they deserved that win.

booksandnooks · 12/05/2021 21:39

@kittenkipping

I don't love dua lepa, but haven't heard of Jessie ware. I'm a parent if teens..... it says something that one of the named artists you mention i "know" - if the kids don't "ship" it then it's not "good"
ship? you can't ship a song! Shipping comes from fanfiction where fans wrote (mostly erotic) stories mostly about the couples they wish were together. its short for relationship. honestly kids these days 🙄😸😸😸
JimBobNoJob · 12/05/2021 22:13

I thought Dua Lipa was a brand of clothing as I saw a pair of jogging bottoms in H&M the other day with Dua Lipa on the leg. Couldn’t make out what it said and Dd said “oh its Dua Lipa!” but didn’t elaborate I just thought that must be a brand the teens are wearing now!

Only realised when I read something about the Brits this morning!

Never heard of Jessie ware either, I must be getting on a bit!
