To just not get the hype around Dua Lipa?

She’s just won Best British Female and Best Album at the Brits- beating the phenomenally talented (and criminally underrated) Jessie Ware, whose latest album is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve heard her last two big singles, Physical and that one before it - Don’t Show Up I think it’s called? They’re just crap. They’re boring. They’ve got no real melody, the songs don’t go anywhere, they do nothing to suggest her voice is anything exceptional.

So why the hell is she being feted as the best female talent this country has to offer right now?

Me, I just don't get the hype around Dua either, vocally she's barely average compared to 90% of other singers, dance routines are basic & I just can't get past how much she looks like James Charles the YouTuber in drag.

IntermittentParps · 12/05/2021 10:08

Her political and racial opinions are not very pleasant to say the least.
She supports Joe Biden, and was a remainer in the Brexit vote, which is OK by me.
She seems to be critical of the Israeli government, not Jewish people, which again is fair enough.
She was a Corbynista though, for which she loses points...

im not sure we are supposed to get the hype over young pop stars. We arent their target audience

RightOnTheEdge · 12/05/2021 10:29

I really like a lot of Dua Lipa's songs.
I had to Google Jessie Ware and I listened to a few of her songs on YouTube and they did nothing for me so I would have the opposite opinion to you on the award.
You can't please everyone.

I think you are right. In the same way my parents rolled their eyes at some of the stuff I liked in the 80s. Maybe it's a case of the pop heroes of your youth will always be the best in comparison? I watched some of The Brits but it left me a bit cold and that's ok. Grin

Well said! I'm way past the age of following someone like Dua Lipa but I completely get why she would be compelling to her target market so to speak.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2021 10:40

If I was a teenager now I would be all over Harry Styles probably...

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 11:33

I prefer Celeste personally but Dua lipa isn't that bad , she has catchy pop songs that people like and being beautiful helps too I suppose.
The thing that does annoy me about most of these pop stars is all the preaching about political issues ( give the NHS more money etc) whilst going back and forth to America and avoiding paying their own taxes.
If they have causes they support they should lead by example and stop all the loopholes!
Most of the time people like this are just hypocrites I'm afraid.
I remember people moaning about the 80s having ' crap ' music ( not like the old days ) so nothing much changes on that score really

Samcro · 12/05/2021 11:57

i saw a bit of her on the news last night. she is lovely looking (can't comment on her music as not idea) when i found my self commenting on her lack of clothes, I realised this stuff is not aimed at me lol

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 12:11

The black stockings were a bit much , but then it didn't stop Madonna dressing in a similar way!
She seems a nice girl but I think her light will only shine for another year ( if that) and it'll be the next new thing on the block.
She'll have to make hay while the sun shines.

I agree, maybe two or three more years.

Artistry and evolution are always important for musicians - we see it even with Miley Cyrus, who was all at sea musically and otherwise until her latest 80s reinvention. By way of contrast but similar principle, Taylor Swift wasn't at sea but decided to pivot away from pop and explore a folksy roots vein of work.

I guess for Dua Lipa the big question is, is there life in her work beyond electro pop radio friendly dance?

That Live Lounge cover of the Arctic Monkeys "Do I Wanna Know" posted earlier in the thread contains the hint to where she could take things if she wanted to, if her management supports, if it's even important to her while she's winning so well.

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 12:53

Wow, that live version of ' do I wanna know' was brilliant! She didn't sing that badly at the brits , but if she had done that song as she did it on that clip , it would have really blown me away. Controlled and heart felt.
Really good. I've seen her in a new light ( and I don't mind her pop songs either)

daisyjgrey · 12/05/2021 12:59

I don’t find her particularly attractive. Certainly not when she’s dressed as a drag queen Amy Winehouse lookalike whose skirt got caught in the car door and tore off.

You may not have brought them up, but this was uncalled for.

Also, music is subjective.

Pricklykaktus · 12/05/2021 13:05

I think both Dua Lipa and Jessie Ware are stunning, beautiful women. I’m no music expert but would not have put them in the same box (musically). DL’s music I find boring and aimed at the masses, Whereas I love a lot of JW’s tracks. But it’s all subjective. I don’t care about who wins an award.

DungeonKeeper · 12/05/2021 13:10

I really like her music, it’s fun pop good to sing along to. My DC love her music. I’ve heard a few of Jessie Ware’s songs, they’ve never done much for me. The last one she did was ok, ‘Remember where you are’.

Love Griff and Black Hole, she’s so talented.

bishbashbosh99 · 12/05/2021 13:14

She's got some great songs, very well written

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 13:36

Griff is so sweet! Amazing voice and hair.
I just hope these talented young women don't ruin it by taking too many drugs or whatever or getting too depressed when it goes a bit wrong for them. Nothing lasts forever.
I've seen it happen too many times to these young people who achieve money and fame very quickly. It can be toxic, especially these days with social media and the hate they must get on there. It must have lots of downsides.

Not untrue, though.

She's brilliant and she is beautiful and she's British. I love all her songs

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 12/05/2021 13:57

I'm not particularly mad about the stuff she releases, it's catchy enough though and I'm definitely not her target audience! She absolutely can sing though - I was very surprised when I heard this recording.

SummaLuvin · 12/05/2021 14:00

I personally love her red carpet looks, they are fun, interesting, and often flattering. They are bold and not everyones cup of tea, but it's nice to see her take risks, rather be another beautiful girl in a pretty, yet boring, dress.

The look she wore last night was Vivian Westwood, and has plenty of references to previous collections making it a really interesting outfit for fashion nerds. It will go over most peoples heads, but it's not really for those people anyway.

AgeLikeWine · 12/05/2021 14:05

The Brits is a marketing vehicle for the music industry to promote its mainstream chart acts. This has always been the case.

There are times when popular = cool & credible, most obviously with Britpop in the late 90s, but also with Stormzy in more recent times. And there are times when popular = vacuous manufactured dross, such as when SAW dominated in the late 80s. Currently, we are in an era of manufactured dross, eg Little Mix & Dua Lipa.

aSofaNearYou · 12/05/2021 14:06

I think it's a bit sad that people are sniggering at her appearance and whether she looks awkward or not. She's been quite open about lacking confidence and having to push herself to do the dance routines etc that are sadly expected of women in the industry these days, if she looks awkward it's because she is a bit naturally awkward. Seems a bit cruel to mock her for it.

murbblurb · 12/05/2021 14:27

Lipa was happy to share some seriously nasty anti semitism on her Twitter feed last year - perhaps she is one of the ' just helps out when they are busy' part time racists. There's a lot of it about. No. Not the same as being against Israeli government policy.

Don't care what she looks like, she didn't have any contribution to that beyond silly clothes.

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 14:29

I thought she looked nice and to wear a British designer is even better. Not many people could pull that look off.
Harry styles wore what looked to me like old 70s wallpaper on his suit but still managed to look cool. I've not heard anyone sniggering about his fashion choice of brown and orange squares!
They have been saying the Brits are rubbish since it started!
