TW: would I be unreasonable to report my dad after finding potential child/non consentual porn

Throwawayadvice · 10/05/2021 16:56

I (21f) have broken my phone, I'm visiting my parents for a few days due to my health. My dad (58m) has 3 phones, I always found it weird he said he used them for gaming. Mine broke and I asked if I could borrow one until I get a new one and put my sim in it. He did relutantly, I opened Google and there were loads of open tabs including quite a lot of porn. The searches include puberty, youngest girl, spoilt vigrins, punching, incest and non consentual ect. I am disgusted, background I was sexually assaulted when I was a teenager by a friends brother, my whole family know this as it went to court. I dont have a brilliant realtionship with my father anyway, he used to hit me as a child and I would have to try and placate him to stop him targeting my brother too, I went to therapy for this as I had to almost act as an adult while my mom was at work. WIBU if I report what I found? I'm tempted to talk to my mom but she's been through a lot lately.

Are there actual images on the pages you saw that would be illegal? In which case I would report. Just the search terms whilst grim, wouldn't be illegal as far as I know

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/05/2021 17:51

I mean it's fucking gross what he's searching for but nothing that could be argued is illegal. Puberty is just code for "actress is of legal age but looks much younger, around the age puberty starts"

Mydarlingmyhamburger · 10/05/2021 17:52

@toocold54

Report him for what though?

These are mainstream porn terms.

Unless he's managed to get hold of actual images of illegal things then I don't see what you have to report him for.

WTF no they’re not!
Some porn sites having dodgy titles but nothing like OP has mentioned.

The best thing would be for them to have your phone and search things that have been deleted but if you’re not ready for that then reporting online gets him on their radar at least.

Most porn sites have titles with exactly what the op has posted.
Throwawayadvice · 10/05/2021 17:52

I've done an online report, they may say there is nothing they can do but I'd rather report and nothing happen than not and find out later it was worse. @panpastels I'm not going to click it to check. Also apologies if I've used incorrect terms somewhere I'm trying to control my anxiety and may have misused it unintentionally.

Mydarlingmyhamburger · 10/05/2021 17:52

Unless there are actual underage children on there he’s not done anything illegal. I’d be keeping him away from any grandchildren though

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/05/2021 17:56

OP they may very well come and remove devices from the house. If they do, they will remove all devices of everybody who lives there. Not just 'your' phone. This includes Smart TV's. And they won't get them back for a good six months. It will be plain clothes officers coming in and out the house, it will be obvious to neighbours what's going on. Just to prepare you - the backlash could be huge for you doing this.

minipie · 10/05/2021 17:58

What the hell is on his other phones?

AntiHop · 10/05/2021 18:01

I really hope you can go no contact with him now. He sounds vile.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 10/05/2021 18:01

Do you think he has illegally accessed child abuse images which are usually only accessible Via darknet
Or is he acessing really grim porn via the normal search engines

As if the later it’s totally grim and horrible
But not illegal

I’m ever so sorry you found this
But clearly he has never been a nice man

SweetPetrichor · 10/05/2021 18:02

I think these are just search terms of someone browsing the ‘barely legal’ end of the porn search options. Unless there’s something actually illegal, I doubt the police will be interested.

Meme69 · 10/05/2021 18:07

@BetterThanKleenex

As others have said, these terms are sadly mainstream and commonly used. It's unlikely the police would be able to do anything or would be interested as he hasn't downloaded/created/posted the 'porn' himself. Even if it depicts child abuse, watching it/searching for it won't get him in trouble.

However, his 3 phones is concerning as he could use one or two as burner phones to post/share/download this content. But unless you can find that out for yourself and have solid evidence, the police are unlikely to get involved.

Yes, it would. Its illegal to watch child pornography as it encourages people to make it. Offences under the Protection of Children Act 1978 include taking, permitting to be taken and making child pornography, distributing or showing child pornography and possessing child pornography. These offences have a maximum possible sentence of 10 years' imprisonment.
wildeverose · 10/05/2021 18:07

An ex gf of my bil made an anonymous and malicious report to the police that he had indecent images of minors. I was living with him and my dp and pil at the time. I came home to the house being raided, all computers including mine, any smart devices, anything and everything was taken. It was very clear what was happening, it was the talk of a very small town and it was complete hell.
He is and was completely innocent in every way and was proven innocent. Absolutely nothing was found, and she actually admitted reporting it out of anger and was fined for wasting police time.

You are not wasting their time, but I just wanted to let you know what will happen due to the report. It will be very hard for a while, so prepare to be strong. Any devices you have will most likely be taken too, smart TVs, anything you can access online. Hope you're ok op x

Putting youngest girl into a search engine is clearly going to bring up child pornography. This is not mainstream porn.
babbaloushka · 10/05/2021 18:08

God that's grim, sorry OP.

toocold54 · 10/05/2021 18:09

@Mydarlingmyhamburger
Please show me a porn site that uses the titles that OP has said. Incest, non consensual, punching etc are all illegal so the site would be banned. Even if they did show this they wouldn’t use illegal terms as they don’t want to be shut down.

Naunet · 10/05/2021 18:09

Fucking hell, if punching, non consensual and puberty are mainstream, the Not All Men lot can piss right off.😮

HKW81 · 10/05/2021 18:09

@Mydarlingmyhamburger

Depicting underage sex is also illegal
toocold54 · 10/05/2021 18:10

OP you have done the right thing ignore the posters minimising his actions by saying it’s normal porn because it obviously isn’t.

SelkieBe · 10/05/2021 18:11

I've no idea whether any of this is an offence but just chiming in to say you poor thing @Throwawayadvice what a horrible shock. And what a dilemma. I applaud you for not doing nothing. xx

SelkieBe · 10/05/2021 18:12

@Naunet

Fucking hell, if punching, non consensual and puberty are mainstream, the Not All Men lot can piss right off.😮
yup. They really can. There's a big market for punching virgins. Give me strength.
Branleuse · 10/05/2021 18:16

Its gross that its mainstream now

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/05/2021 18:30

Putting youngest girl into a search engine is clearly going to bring up child pornography. This is not mainstream porn.

Sadly it is.

They get round it by technically meaning "youngest girl who is aged 18 but looks younger". Grim

Porn sites are (or rather, should) contain material that is acted. Porn stars are essentially actors. So it's not REALLY invest, it's two people role playing being incestuous. Punching is S&M. It really sails close to the wind of legality but the porn industry also aren't stupid and stay on the right side of legal

Brokenpencilsarepointless · 10/05/2021 18:34

@Crocidura

It's in the title, so that's something everyone scrolling through active threads will see. It should not be a term which people use because they arent pornogaraphy. It is images of abuse.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/05/2021 18:36

And the "non consensual" is people acting that they're being raped for example.
Sadly a huge problem with porn is that not all 'actors' are there consensually (wether being paid to have sex is in itself consensual is a philosophical question, I don't think it's is consensual personally but legally it's too much of a grey area) many are trafficked and there's no way of telling from these videos who is and isn't
