That women shouldn’t be forced into silence over males competing in female sports

NEW Zealand has selected a 43 yr old transwoman to represent them in the Olympics in the women’s weightlifting competition. Female athletes feel they are being forced into silence on the issue. How did it come to this?

Because anyone speaking out is considered transphobic and hounded m. It’s a disgrace and completely unfair

ClarkeGriffin · 08/05/2021 15:00

This isn't fair. There should be a separate category for anyone who is transgender. We have separate categories for men and women for most other sports, cant see the big deal in a third one.

CirclesWithinCircles · 08/05/2021 15:01

Its disgusting, but it might just bring this issue to the attention of the world and ridicule to New Zealand for facilitating it.

To be fair to New Zealand, Hubbard and her family basically control this sport in New Zealand and have rewritten the rules to benefit themselves. Hubbard also threatens legal action to prevent negative press reports about their other activities.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 08/05/2021 15:01

It's absolutely disgusting. What they are basically saying is that women's sports only actually exist to meet the needs and desires of males. Men decide what women are and are not allowed to be OK with.

HumphreyCobblers · 08/05/2021 15:02

I think the male category could be open to any gender and the female one protected.

This whole issue makes my blood boil. The poor woman who now won’t get to go the the Olympics because she has been ousted by this cheating person.

Wannakisstheteacher · 08/05/2021 15:04

Beyond wrong. A biological woman simply cannot compete with a biological man in weightlifting. I’m sorry but to me it is pure cheating. The athlete in question was an extremely mediocre male weightlifter but will now almost certainly win the gold as a ‘woman’. How is that fair?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 08/05/2021 15:14

How is that fair?

And why would you want to compete like this? If you win, you’ll forever wonder whether you were competing on a level playing field or if you had an unfair advantage.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 08/05/2021 15:15

I don’t particularly like Caitlin Jenner but I’m pleased she spoke out against this. It’s so very wrong.

Queenoftheashes · 08/05/2021 15:19

Awful

This makes me so cross for many reasons. Firstly a woman has lost her place at the Olympics and secondly becuase we're not allowed to talk about how unfair it is without repercussions. It's first rate misogyny dressed up as progress.

Flaunch · 08/05/2021 15:24

It’s nothing short of cheating.

They ought to be embarrassed.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 08/05/2021 15:27

What a surprise, women being told to be quiet and let the men take over. If only every other woman in this contest would just refuse to take part!

Igmum · 08/05/2021 15:33

Awful, awful, awful. In earlier competitions the women Hubbard was beating were women of colour who had trained incredibly hard to get to elite level yet we are supposed to say that it is white millionaire transwoman Hubbard who is disadvantaged? Beyond vile

DragonMuff · 08/05/2021 15:34

I agree totally.

It is just unarguable, and the knots people tie themselves into to justify it is just excruciating to watch - “oh but what about tall women” and other total bollocks.

Sarah Silverman was a good example of such bullshittery the other day when she said it was not a concern about women’s sport but transphobia Hmm

Watermelon222 · 08/05/2021 15:34

This makes me so cross.

With a dd who competes at a high level at her sport it sickens me that this is the way things are going, and as you say it is pretty impossible to mention it without risk of retribution.

The discussion needs to be had in a sensible manner. It is impossible for biological females to compete on a level playing field with anyone who has undergone male puberty.

As people have said, a third category would be fairer.

Alonelonelyloner · 08/05/2021 15:35

I agree with @MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes.
Women need to go on strike. If this happens, I mean most women, or key female athletes, then eventually they will have to listen to us.

This is a goddamn farce.

DrSbaitso · 08/05/2021 15:36

@BrightYellowDaffodil

How is that fair?

I don't think this kind of person cares about a fair victory.
OwlBeThere · 08/05/2021 15:37

For people who feel silenced I hear about how everyone on mumsnet feels about trans women every 5 mins.

DragonMuff · 08/05/2021 15:38

I might have less of a problem with it if it had been a decision made with everyone’s fairness in mind after an open debate about the issues and science underpinning this but the storm brought down on anyone who speaks out to enforce silence is just disgusting.

Of course the reason we can’t have that discussion is because everyone knows what the outcome would be so women have to be kept quiet on pain of being cancelled.

Watermelon222 · 08/05/2021 15:38

@Alonelonelyloner

I agree with *@MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes*. Women need to go on strike. If this happens, I mean most women, or key female athletes, then eventually they will have to listen to us.

This is a goddamn farce.

But then they’re at risk of being cancelled. There really is no easy answer. Look at jk Rowling. It’s quite shocking.
Sexnotgender · 08/05/2021 15:39

It’s a big steaming pile of bollocks.

Women deserve so much better.

Tell you what, go on Twitter in your own name and speak out against this, see the reaction you get.

Mumsnet is anonymous which is why people can speak freely. Or look up the attempts to get Kelly Holmes dropped by her sponsors when she spoke out.

Your post is ridiculous and presumably goady as you cannot possibly think that being able to post your opinion on Mumsnet means that there isn’t a culture of silencing people on this issue.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 08/05/2021 15:43

If women refuse to take part all that leads to is women losing out again

Women have the right to expect that their sports governing bodies will safe guard their right to fair completion not wang them under the bus for woke points
