That women shouldn’t be forced into silence over males competing in female sports

NEW Zealand has selected a 43 yr old transwoman to represent them in the Olympics in the women’s weightlifting competition. Female athletes feel they are being forced into silence on the issue. How did it come to this?

I don’t feel there’s a future for women’s sport anymore it’s sad.

zzizzer · 08/05/2021 17:24

The only way this will change is if all women drop out in protest.

Which, after a lifetime of training, they just won't.

Staffy1 · 08/05/2021 17:25

@DrSbaitso

The killer is that everyone knows it's bullshit. Nobody actually thinks that a trans woman is an adult human of the egg producing reproductive class.
Agreed.
risefromyourgrave · 08/05/2021 17:26

@StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind

It's absolutely disgusting. More top level male athletes need to start speaking out about this too, I'm sure they'll be able to do so without the bile that's been spewed at the women who have had the courage to say that males competing in women's sport is wrong. It's madness that stating something so obvious takes courage!

Out of interest does anyone know if any current top level male athletes have commented on it?

Not a current athlete but the fantastic Daley Thompson has been speaking about it for quite a while.

@DrSbaitso

Why don't we categorise by weight and height?

Because when all else is equal, a man and woman of the same height and weight will still have different proportions of muscle and fat; more muscle on the man, more fat on the woman. And more male hormones in the man which contribute to speed and strength.

Do people really not know this? Do people really now think that literally the only difference between male and female bodies is dangly bits?

In terms of refusing to acknowledge differences between the sexes, I think its a form of vengeance on feminists who dared to suggest women were equal to men in society.

"Fine! If you're equal to us then there's no difference is there? No special treatment for you!"

Laiste · 08/05/2021 17:27

One day this will be discussed in social history lessons and people will frown and shake their heads and even laugh about it maybe.

If my grandchildren ask me how it came about i'll say i can't even explain it properly. But it's to do with women being used to pandering to the wishes of men. To do with perfectly intelligent women wanting to pretend everything was equal and fine and giving an inch - when really it still wasn't and they took a fucking mile.

so true

itsgettingwierd · 08/05/2021 17:29

This is exactly why they should have transgender categories.

Because sex is a biological process which does affect people due to hormones.

Gender is a social construct and changing gender doesn't change the sex and biological processes.

And if needs be also add trans sex categories as well for those who complete a sexual transition and their current hormones have an affect on their bodies. But someone who's had testosterone for decades won't suddenly lose that bone and muscle strength because they have their penis removed, a vagina designed or estrogen hormones added.

This needs to stop being silenced. Everyone should have the right to be who they believe they are. But not at the detriment of others.

itsgettingwierd · 08/05/2021 17:31

I've always said I'd love a group of woman to say they identify as male.

And then try and compete in male swimming - something tells me they won't allow a woman identifying as a man to swim in just a pair of jammers!

zzizzer · 08/05/2021 17:33

I've just looked up the name on reddit and am actually surprised to see almost universal comments on how unfair it is - even from people who clearly want to be 100% on board with TRA ideology.

So who knows, maybe there's hope? Maybe people like this particular narcissist will be the final straw?

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 08/05/2021 17:34

Thank you @risefromyourgrave, I do remember now that Daley Thompson has spoken about it.

I was just thinking how good it would be if Roger Federer, Usain Bolt, Gareth Bale etc, the top men within their sports, all decided to 'identify' as women and complete- to make a stand and to help shed more light on this. They need to start speaking out too.

LondonJax · 08/05/2021 17:36

@itsgettingwierd - some women did back in 2018 and guess what. The men called the police who escorted the women off the premises...www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/female-campaigners-selfidentify-as-men-to-infiltrate-male-only-pool-at-hampstead-heath-a3850556.html

Askingforfriend · 08/05/2021 17:36

I am very torn on this subject.

Transgender athletes should absolutely be able to compete with the gender that they identify with. Intersex athletes should also be able to do the same.

Women cannot compete on a level playing field with people that are born male. Even if a transgender or intersex athlete is taking hormone blockers there are things that make people with male biologyphysically different that influences how they play... lung size, pelvis shape and angles of legs, limb sizes etc

I don't see a way of making it fair for both these groups of people. I don't think weight classes work... a 150lb man is typically stronger than a 150lb woman. A 150lb doesn't lose a bunch of iron every month.

I understand that one argument is that elite athletes are not normal people. They have many physical advantages already... they are taller or more flexible or have a bigger than average wingspan or lung capacity or higher natural testosterone or VO2 max. I get that.

I don't think a third category works or is fair to intersex/transgender athletes. You shouldn't have to reveal personal medical information in order to compete.

I don't see a solution to this. No matter what is decided it is going to be unfair for someone.

I think that women's sports are in danger.

Maireas · 08/05/2021 17:37

@zzizzer excellent points- daring to ask for equality is always used as a stick to beat us with.
I agree with pp, it would be nice if more male athletes spoke against this.

Whoever those woman are - I love and respect them so much!

I'm absolutely not surprised at the response though. Because transgender rights seem to disadvantage woman at every turn.

A male rapper identified as a woman and broke the deadlift women’s record, just to show how wrong men competing in women’s sports is.

I'm not torn. It's quite simple- biological males should not be competing in women's sport. Have a trans category or they can compete in men's sport.

You've said 'I think womens sport is in danger'- well how the fuck is that fair? Are men's sport in danger too? Why is it ok for women's sport to be in danger?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/05/2021 17:43

It’s a mans world. Still.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 08/05/2021 17:45

Also @Askingforfriend do you think it's right then that transwomen could compete against women in sports like rugby/boxing? Someone posted earlier about Fallon Fox in MMA breaking a woman's skull ffs, how is this right?

Will it take a woman to be killed before people take notice?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/05/2021 17:47

Strawberry but it will be brushed over.

So no.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 08/05/2021 17:50

Does anyone know what we can practically do? Is it worth contacting my MP? What can be done about this madness?

I feel increasingly desperate to try and do something, anything!

BlackDaffodil · 08/05/2021 17:51

Transgender athletes should absolutely be able to compete with the gender that they identify with. Intersex athletes should also be able to do the same.

what utter bollocks

no pun intended. 🙄

mollythemeerkat · 08/05/2021 17:51

It means mediocre male athletes can take prizes - cant imagine why women might be upset about this! Or anyone who believes in fair competition for that matter.

Cattenberg · 08/05/2021 17:58

As some one else said , when it comes to sport, safety needs to come first, then fairness, then inclusion.

I have a (mild) hearing impairment. It would be inclusive to let me compete in the Paralympics. It would not, however be fair.

Yes, it's akin to those who see pregnant women struggling to stand on a crowded Tube and say "pregnancy is not an illness you know!"
