People on marketplace can be so weird!

Messaged someone asking if I could buy a plant pot. They said sure. Arranged to pick up this week. I messaged to confirm and heard nothing. Messages very politely again saying I'd still love the plant pot so please let me know when is ideal time to collect, but again nothing. Left a couple of days between each message. Got my friend to message and they've now blocked me and are selling for the same price to my friend (they're going to get a shock when I turn up!). It's so badly regulated, there's no way for me to leave a review. So, how awkward do I make her feel when I go to collect? Or just don't say anything at all? 😁

What? That is so weird. Why aren't they selling it to you but they are your friend. Do they know you? Do they fancy your friend?

Never met them before in my life. My gut tells me it's because they're possibly nervous of telling a fairly large black woman with a shaved head and piercings their address. But who knows, that could be my own experience clouding my judgement!

I had this recently but it was my sister that messaged and wanted to buy,They discussed price but didn't wait for further offer, they told her it wasn't available but it was still advertised so I messaged.
I also asked if open to offers, had a bit back and forth nice conversation and I bought it .
Very odd but we got there in the end! I do find on there I often feel like I'm chasing up which is mad if they're wanting to sell!

It's odd isn't it. I always sell to whoever turns up first. If they need to reschedule that's completely fine as well because you know... Life! It just makes me paranoid it's due to my appearance, which sadly the abuse I get just walking down the street makes me think it must be!

Update. I'm going to collect tomorrow. Slightly nervous! 😅

Are you going to say anything? It does sound like something is very ‘off’, unless you were awkward in your messages. DH blocked several people over the weekend when he was selling a TV unit for collection only- countless ‘will you deliver’ (to the other side of town, costing more in fuel than we were asking for it). Then ‘oh please, I really need it’ ‘what if I give you £5?’ etc. Another- ‘I’m on my way now, give me your address. Why haven’t you replied, you’re wasting my time’- how are you on your way if you only have the first part of our postcode from the listing?!

Sounds like you’re absolutely lovely though so probably not anything like that! Are you sure you want the item that badly?

I really want it. It's beautiful. I wasn't off at all. Very polite. Very clear I'll fit around her schedule. I'm usually the sore thumb so she'll definitely recognise me. I guess I need not say anything!

I could talk for hours about my weird experiences with marketplace! Full of time wasters and oddballs. Good luck picking it up! Hope you have a lovely plant to go in it

I get SO many people agreeing to buy something and then not turning up. It drives me insane, why spend ages bartering me and then not come and collect it?!?

Exactly! This woman has the opposite with me! Won't bloody let me pick it up 😅

I had a weird experience today on marketplace. Didn’t want to sell to me and I don’t know why. I find giving things away for free a pain in the bum too.

Odd isn't it. I have a 5 star buyer rating too. Every single one 5 stars and that's from over 30 people (toddler toy clear out!)

People on Marketplace are weird. I have 5 star ratings (although they seem to have stopped being able to rate people) but apparently need to work on my friendliness. Literally no one ever has said that about me in real life Grin

HumunaHey · 19/04/2021 22:52

I'm just bookmarking for the update. I love that you're going to collect it. She's in for a shock 😂.

Although, if she thought you were strange before and went cold, she'll think you're batshit crazy tomorrow. She'll assume you catfished her for the plant pot.

If I saw you were the lady I'd blocked, I wouldn't answer the door tbh. I'd feel way too embarrassed/awkward lol. But fingers crossed for you 🤞. Must be a very lovely plant pot indeed.

SquirtleSquad · 19/04/2021 22:59

Ooo good luck, make sure you let someone know where/when you're going just incase anything weird happens..

Claphands · 19/04/2021 23:05

Marketplace is much weirder than EBay or any other selling site. So many odd bods on there! Can’t your friend pick it up for you in case they play funny buggers again?

romdowa · 19/04/2021 23:15

I hate facebook marketplace for both buying and selling, it's just so odd. We had a woman recently who couldnt find our house and then accused us of messing her around. She had our postcode and address and we gave her directions , I've no idea what more she wanted ... a trail of breadcrumbs?

ConfusedAdultFemale · 19/04/2021 23:33

Careful, she could well call the police considering it’s not you she thinks is turning up at her door.

sunshineandshowers21 · 19/04/2021 23:43

the same thing happened to my sister. she wanted a pram, messaged the woman and she said she could have it, my sister tried to arrange collection, but then the woman never messaged her back, just completely blanked the messages. so i messaged her the next day and the woman had dropped it off to me within the hour and knocked £30 off the price. i must just have a more likeable face Grin

RomainingCalm · 19/04/2021 23:55

It drives me bonkers too with the strange requests, the people that just go silent on you, the rude demands to deliver.

I sold some garden chairs last month for £20, there were about 6 photos showing different angles and clearly showed/stated some minor damage on one.

First message: 'can u send video'

What? Of four garden chairs? What on earth did he think they were going to perform.

Good luck OP.
