People on marketplace can be so weird!

Messaged someone asking if I could buy a plant pot. They said sure. Arranged to pick up this week. I messaged to confirm and heard nothing. Messages very politely again saying I'd still love the plant pot so please let me know when is ideal time to collect, but again nothing. Left a couple of days between each message. Got my friend to message and they've now blocked me and are selling for the same price to my friend (they're going to get a shock when I turn up!). It's so badly regulated, there's no way for me to leave a review. So, how awkward do I make her feel when I go to collect? Or just don't say anything at all? 😁

Why didn’t you just put the money through the letterbox? I thought that was standard social distancing practice & what I’ve been asked to do when items left outside

I would've had I not been so paranoid of being accused of stealing.

I am so sorry.

Whilst I don't like the idea of giving this woman time or money, I do like the idea of you getting the pot.

Do you have another friend who could perhaps collect for you?

radiateforme · 21/04/2021 10:20

My friend has text telling me she's going to go and take it and put the money through the door. You'd think I was making this up 😅

All good re this plant pot then - I’m imagining something vibrant from Anthropologie & would love the bargain too 😊 - but no end to the everyday racism you have to put up with...

Also communication is awful.
No polite please and thankyous,
ridiculously bad spelling,
abrupt “how much you want” and that’s it
haggling to less than 50% asking price
forgetting to collect as sudden emergency/dentist/birth/apocalypse

eBay is slightly better, but nothing compares to Etsy.
So many lovehearts, stories about their life, their lovely children, emojis and kisses all over the place, hundreds of messages exchanged, and that’s before we’ve even got to queries about what it is they want me to design and make for them. Lovely women on there! And the feedback they leave is just as great, it really does make your day the communication between buyer and seller on there.

The woman sounds potty op!!

Oh no OP that is horrible and appalling really to be honest. Sorry you have had this experience. It’s 2021 and there are still people like this in the world, it’s a disgrace.

I admire your determination. But in all honesty, if it was me I wouldn’t have bothered at all. As soon as she blocked me There’s no way I’d be giving her any of my hard earned money, I’d find somewhere/someone else to buy the plant pot

Atalantea · 21/04/2021 10:58

@Rainbowx

Actually I'm going against the grain here and think you turning up is very wrong especially after she is expecting someone else and could report you to fb and the police as impersonating someone, she may have a valid personal reason (or not) but it could backfire on you .
Really - original 'buyer' is under no obligation to agree collection agency with the seller

I would say that if they want to go down that route, they would have to explain why exactly they would not sell to a fairly large black woman with a shaved head and piercings and would to her friend?

Etsy and Folksy both want you to put how you felt when you were making it, what is the story bollocks
Plexmex · 21/04/2021 11:12

OP that’s awful Sad Is there a feedback section for sellers on marketplace? If so I’d 100% be leaving feedback telling people who they are. In fact I think I’d want to be sharing their profile to local FB groups and shaming them (though I appreciate that isn’t the best idea) that’s awful behaviour Sad

TokyoSushi · 21/04/2021 11:16

Ah this is terrible OP, people on Marketplace are so weird, and you sound lovely!

Far better than the 'I want a free sofa and you'll need to deliver it to me' crew!

Loving some of the responses on this thread. Especially the trail of breadcrumbs 🤣

GilbertsLuckySocks · 21/04/2021 18:26

@Atalantea Yes, they do. It’s all garbage. I’m not sitting in my Cornish studio overlooking the bay hand crocheting my lunch, barefoot and pregnant, producing handmade eco friendly goods. But that’s the sort of thing it says in our bio. We’re actually in an industrial unit in town using all the worst kinds of non eco friendly and tech processes to produce the handmade item.

But people want to buy the idea, not just the product. So it works. Shame really.

Lollypop701 · 21/04/2021 20:19

Great friend you have op

saltychoc · 22/04/2021 01:31

@Adoptedabunny

I found a rabbit hutch on marketplace that was just what I wanted for my bunny

Arranged collection and when seller answered the door they said I’m going to be heartbroken to see it go. I thought that’s a very weird attachment to a rabbit hutch but heyho. Seller helped me lift the hutch into my van.

When I got home realised it was probably the rabbit in the hutch the seller was sad about.

No mention in the advert that there was a rabbit in the hutch.

That is brilliant!
FrownsAndDimples · 22/04/2021 01:39

Same thing happened to me. I messaged a guy about a a fireplace, did not respond back to me. I thought it was odd given it was still available for sale so I leave it a few days and message again politely saying I really am keen and happy to pay full price but nope no response. Message shown as checked, as before, but left unresponded. Got my Caucasian friend to message and ping messages back saying of course you can buy it. He just didn't like the tone of my skin in my profile pic, hard to think it is anything else. Twat.

MarshmallowAra · 22/04/2021 01:46

I use.a separate specific FB account fur buying and selling on marketplace.

I don't think I even have a photo on it (and dont even have a photo of me on my personal FB account) so they wouldn't have a clue what I look like, what race etc.

MarshmallowAra · 22/04/2021 01:47

I don't mean anyone should have to hide their race or ethnicity, just that for privacy j wouldn't have anything identifying ... And if they choose not to respond, that's up to them (not that anyone ever hasn't, I mostly sell anyway).

MarshmallowAra · 22/04/2021 01:49

My sister had a woman tell her to.contsxt her if the first buyer didn't follow through - she did and the woman then responded "fuck off!".

Grin
MarshmallowAra · 22/04/2021 01:51

Anyway in the words of a seller and van man I know "they want it for nothing and they want it delivered to their door too".

Habbyhadno · 22/04/2021 08:44

@radiateforme

  1. Do you now have the pot? Did your friend go?
  1. I really want to see what the pot looks like, can you post a pic?GrinGrinGrin
Aprilshowersandhail · 22/04/2021 19:49

Has anyone else told everyone they know the hutch tale (tail!)?..
I once went and collected 2 pots. 1 had been glued in about 5 places!!
Ds knocked it as soon as I put it on the floor and it fell apart!
