People on marketplace can be so weird!

Messaged someone asking if I could buy a plant pot. They said sure. Arranged to pick up this week. I messaged to confirm and heard nothing. Messages very politely again saying I'd still love the plant pot so please let me know when is ideal time to collect, but again nothing. Left a couple of days between each message. Got my friend to message and they've now blocked me and are selling for the same price to my friend (they're going to get a shock when I turn up!). It's so badly regulated, there's no way for me to leave a review. So, how awkward do I make her feel when I go to collect? Or just don't say anything at all? 😁

I found a rabbit hutch on marketplace that was just what I wanted for my bunny

Arranged collection and when seller answered the door they said I’m going to be heartbroken to see it go. I thought that’s a very weird attachment to a rabbit hutch but heyho. Seller helped me lift the hutch into my van.

When I got home realised it was probably the rabbit in the hutch the seller was sad about.

No mention in the advert that there was a rabbit in the hutch.

I was so, so, so disgusted that my friend who is black changed her photo and saw a huge difference in the tone and outcome of her Facebook marketplace interactions. Unreal and I'm aware my shock at that is proof of my privilege as a white passing person.

Crazy! Poor rabbit rolling around the hutch in the van. What happened to it?

We advertised a free maple dining table. Old but good sized and in decent shape. Could easily sit a family of 8 and was very solid. Even though it was free, ppl were messaging my husband and demanding more pictures, asking very nit picky questions and then insisting he deliver it. He finally told them, FGS it's free, if you want it come get it, if not bugger off! And that caused a whole new round of hysterics.

Shamelessly bookmarking for the update 😜

stackemhigh · 20/04/2021 06:05

My gut tells me it's because they're possibly nervous of telling a fairly large black woman with a shaved head and piercings their address.

Unfortunately I think you may be right Sad

Oh my goodness! I don’t know if that’s awful or hilarious! Poor rabbit! Is it ok now?
drpet49 · 20/04/2021 06:19

* my sister tried to arrange collection, but then the woman never messaged her back, just completely blanked the messages. so i messaged her the next day and the woman had dropped it off to me within the hour and knocked £30 off the price. i must just have a more likeable face*

I do believe people are judged by their Facebook photo/ profile and unfortunately that is what has happened to the OP.

Oversize · 20/04/2021 06:22

I think you're right OP. I also think she won't answer the door. If you really want that plant pot, I'd suggest your friend picks it up but in any case would you be able to look at it and not be reminded of that horrible person.Angry

Show us a pic on here. I'm sure we can find you one somewhere else.

Goodebe · 20/04/2021 06:35

I love finding bargains on marketplace. This has reminded me of something strange that happend to me - listers hairdryer, got asked for a video of it working by a bloke who was looking for one for his girlfriend... sent it assuming he wanted to know how loud it was or something, then he asked for a video of it drying my hair?! “Just a section”.

Is that weird?

Oh OP I’d love to see the plant pot, I really hope you get it today. Good luck!

PaddleBoardingMomma · 20/04/2021 06:36

I had this recently for the first time ever! On gumtree though, does that count?

Messaged on a Monday, she didn't reply until late Tuesday and this was the pattern until Saturday, taking over a day to reply. I said I'd take it, asked for her address and then nothing... no reply for days and then she marked it as sold!

Some people are just terrible communicators I guess? Or take a dislike to someone for a random reason? Bizarre and weird...

Nsws2015 · 20/04/2021 06:48

I had this a few weeks ago, wanted a little yikes climbing cube for my little ones first birthday so was was looking around for one, found one not far away, checked with hubby that he would collect and messaged them. Got a yes its still available, messaged pretty much straight back saying could we please collect the following day.......nothing! Ignored completely and then a couple days later it was marked sold. It really annoyed me at the time, but I got a good deal a few days later on one with a rocking horse too, and even though its not his birthday til tomorrow he may have had a few sneaky plays on it and loves the slide 🤣

ShiftingSands · 20/04/2021 06:52

I'm so glad someone put up this thread! I have had a few people block me instantly on Marketplace when I messaged asking to buy their item..and the item is still there for sale! I'm not a serial killer, so I'm unsure why I merited such a drastic response!

bonfireheart · 20/04/2021 06:55

I put 12 books on for £2, great condition, works out about 16p a book, I wrote collection only. Got messages from people Iiving a distance away asking if I would deliver?

bonfireheart · 20/04/2021 06:57

@goodebe that is so weird!!

Soubriquet · 20/04/2021 06:58

Shameless place marking Grin
I’ve not had any buying experiences but selling yes

Especially when someone turned up with £20 less of the asking price of what they agreed to buy..

It was £50 altogether. I felt pressured in letting it go for £30 Sad

Honeybee2021 · 20/04/2021 07:05

Sadly in the UK any interaction that allows people to scrutinise you from your Facebook profile is bad news if you don’t fit certain characteristics- unfortunately being black is one. UK is a very judgemental place for me.

Ah those ones!!!

You've reminded me of when I was offering up a rocking / nursing chair for free to who could collect. There were similar for sale for £50-£80 but I had left it too late and was moving the next day and realised there was genuinely no room for it on the van and needed it gone before the morning!

First couple of messages both asking me to take it to them, one was over an hours round trip! Explained to them it wasn't possible and one called me a useless b*tch 😂

Eileen101 · 20/04/2021 07:07

Also place marking for the update. You sound lovely OP! I sincerely hope you're not being judged by your appearance.

I've sold a few bits on marketplace but not had any bad experiences yet. Although I did answer an appeal for glass jars on our local Freecycle to someone who desperately needed some... Responded to say I had some that I could give away, and she never turned up. Couldn't have been that desperate.

Adoptedabunny · 20/04/2021 07:26

I was very upset for the bunny at the time but now I think it’s quite funny that I thought someone would be heartbroken at selling a hutch.
I kept the rabbit and so my bargain find ended up costing me more than twice as much as I still had to buy a new hutch for my own bunny, but now had vet fees etc for my new acquisition.

Rainbowx · 20/04/2021 08:10

Actually I'm going against the grain here and think you turning up is very wrong especially after she is expecting someone else and could report you to fb and the police as impersonating someone, she may have a valid personal reason (or not) but it could backfire on you .

JocastaNu · 20/04/2021 08:17

I've stopped listing stuff for free on Marketplace because you get everyone and their Mum asking "is this available" within a 100 mile radius, and loads of time wasters. Now I put a low price on it, and if the person who "buys" it uses whole sentences and turns up when they say so I give it for free.

I've found that the local selling groups tend to result in better interactions, but we're a small town where everyone knows everyone else which probably helps.

I think it's because you're black OP. Sorry Flowers

MaryIsA · 20/04/2021 08:22

Yes, I only sell to people who use whole sentences. There’s one on a local group who writes ‘too expensive, it’s rubbish’ under random items. I was quite put out till I realised.

Wha5 happened to the rabbit?

AmandaHugenkiss · 20/04/2021 08:23

Bookmarking purely for the update!

Also agree marketplace is weird. I gave an oak bedding chest away for free once (we got it free, it was old and during first lockdown and lots of people had money worries so didn’t want to profit) and I had a guy from 200 miles away message just to “explain” I obviously didn’t understand how much it was worth and I should be asking for money! Was properly angry I wasn’t charging for it 😂

Please, please tell me how I would have impersonated someone? I'd love to know!
