£500 one off payment tax credits.

Apologies for not posting in the right area but thought it may reach a lot of people!

Dp got a text today to say that one off payments of £500 are being paid by 23rd April. I didn’t think we would be eligible. Is it just a generic text sent to everyone or just those entitled? I thought it was only for those on working tax credits, we only get child tax credits I believe.

To clarify. Dp works and has worked all the way through the pandemic and earns around £30,000 a year. I am currently a stay at home mum to out two children who both have additional needs. The bulk of our child tax credits are based on my children receiving disability living allowance rather than dp’s earnings. We do get some based on his earnings though.

I am really clueless 😂 I thought tax credits were eventually being changed over to universal credit too. We still get ‘tax credits’ and not universal credit.

Advice for a confused mum.

We own our own home and don’t get any other benefits apart from the DLA my children get and the tax credits (obviously child benefit too). £500 would be very appreciated!

Tia.

No idea, but interested to find out. This would be so useful.

Meme69 · 31/03/2021 16:20

If you get any working tax credits, or are entitled to them but don't receive them then you should get it as far as I understand

GravityFalls · 31/03/2021 16:21

The answer is, nobody knows - trust me I have ^scoured* the internet because I have good reasons why I do qualify and also good reasons why I don’t.

All the Gov website says is “may” this and “may” that so is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. They won’t show on the app so that’s no use and I’ve even seen on the HMRC Twitter feed the “official” responses giving conflicting advice. So I guess the short answer is, nobody knows what the hell the rules are. I suppose it’s too simple just to publish them and let us work it out for ourselves...

Hankunamatata · 31/03/2021 16:21

Think it's only working tax credits, bot child tax credits. Depends of you get both.

Hankunamatata · 31/03/2021 16:22

HMRC app is brilliant for keeping track of tax credits and paye

LizBennet · 31/03/2021 16:22

Yes you should be entitled to it.

£500 one off payment tax credits.
GravityFalls · 31/03/2021 16:23

That screenshot would be amazing if it didn’t, in the very first line, say “you MAY qualify”...in other words it leaves you none the wiser whether you qualify or not.

Hey2492 · 31/03/2021 16:24

I am co confused!

I assumed I would get it as I meet the criteria in the screenshot... but haven’t had a text message!

Did you just not read the part where it says that HMRC will contact those eligible?
Hey2492 · 31/03/2021 16:29

I’ve looked up our entitlement and it’s zero working tax credits which is obvious as dp earns 30 grand + a year! I wasn’t expecting the payment at all. Just that we’ve been sent a text and it got my hopes up.

Dp has worked all the way through. Thankfully his job was unchanged and was never furloughed. So nothing has changed financially for us in the last year but it would of been nice 😊

The text didn’t say we were entitled. It was along the lines of ‘one off payments for working families of £500 to be paid by 23rd April’. Didn’t actually say we were getting it though!

Had the same text literally this minute and I’m confused as didn’t think I would get it. It would be very helpful as need to buy a washing machine but still getting my hopes up until it goes into my account but erring on the side of it won’t and it’s a general text.

It is a text from the gov though as the message previous to that is the code they send me when I access my online records.

My situation is very similar to yours but income a couple of thousand less.

Confusing isn’t it. Our tumble dryer is packing up so it would be beneficial too!

Yes it came from the same service that’s sent our access codes before so fingers crossed we are entitled but not getting my hopes up!

Yes, the text is contact - but it doesn’t confirm or deny eligibility! Just says “ HMRC: One-off £500 payment by 23 April for working households receiving tax credits - it's automatic so no action needed. Search 'one-off payment' on Gov UK”

GreatestSh0wUnicorn · 31/03/2021 16:49

Interesting I think I’m entitled but never had a text.

Also got one! In addition had a password reminder from the same number so I am assuming we will. We have been getting child tc of about £20 a month for the last year, and haven't reapplied nor are we going to so I guess it's for last year. The advice seems to be that if you have had a text you are entitled to it. Very handy!

sadonfriday · 31/03/2021 16:56

Just had it too, fingers crossed!

GravityFalls · 31/03/2021 17:11

Ok, so I messaged HMRC customer support on Twitter with a screenshot of the message attached, asking if receiving the message meant you were definitely eligible, and the reply was “you are correct” - so looks like good news for all us text-havers!

SadSad I was so convinced we were eligible. I wasn’t banking on the money as didn’t want to be disappointed, but it would have made a big difference and been very useful!
GravityFalls · 31/03/2021 17:14

I wouldn’t get despondent yet, it can take them a while to get through everyone - someone got a text yesterday, mine wasn’t until the afternoon, so I don’t think they all go out at once.

SallyAnn32 · 31/03/2021 17:14

Is tax credits same as universal credit?

GravityFalls · 31/03/2021 17:16

No, Universal Credit is a different thing. UC is having an continued uplift for the time being as far as I know whereas tax credits are not, so the Tax Credits extra payment is to make up for the shortfall.

PembrokeshireDreaming · 31/03/2021 17:21

DH also had the text this morning ..........we also have a disabled child and I'm a SAHM. We get Child Tax Credits but zero working tax credits too.

We will have to wait and see if anything gets paid in!!!
