£500 one off payment tax credits.

Apologies for not posting in the right area but thought it may reach a lot of people!

Dp got a text today to say that one off payments of £500 are being paid by 23rd April. I didn’t think we would be eligible. Is it just a generic text sent to everyone or just those entitled? I thought it was only for those on working tax credits, we only get child tax credits I believe.

To clarify. Dp works and has worked all the way through the pandemic and earns around £30,000 a year. I am currently a stay at home mum to out two children who both have additional needs. The bulk of our child tax credits are based on my children receiving disability living allowance rather than dp’s earnings. We do get some based on his earnings though.

I am really clueless 😂 I thought tax credits were eventually being changed over to universal credit too. We still get ‘tax credits’ and not universal credit.

Advice for a confused mum.

We own our own home and don’t get any other benefits apart from the DLA my children get and the tax credits (obviously child benefit too). £500 would be very appreciated!

Tia.

I get child tax credits but not working tax credits (not yet been switched to UC). I have been receiving the £20 uplift through the pandemic so am presuming I will get the one off payment as that is what it is replacing? Also the £20 uplift was publicised as being for those on UC or working tax credits so I hadn't originally thought I would get it. Agreed about the HMRC app, it’s really good and I also found out about the Help to Save scheme through it.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/03/2021 18:29

@Hey2492 are you claiming carers?

Hey2492 · 31/03/2021 18:29

@Magnificentmug12

Let me tell you that 30k with 2 kids, childcare costs and a mortgage to pay is nothing!!

You obviously get taxed on 30k so your take home isn’t 2.5k a month.

Yes it’s 30000 before tax! About 27000ish take home per year.

No! But I am looking into it!

I’m so confused still - who exactly qualifies for this? Anyone on CTC?

KilljoysDutch · 31/03/2021 18:32

Bizarre that people earning 30k a year would get this.

Especially when you consider that those of us who are disabled won't.

Hey2492 · 31/03/2021 18:36

I think I worked out what he pays in tax wrong. He earns 30000 ish. So that’s 24000 at 20
percent take home not 27000 as I said above 😂 I’m not with it today!

Which is about right. As he gets paid £2000 a month so £500 a week. It isn’t a lot with a mortgage!

@Hey2492 you will only officially claim it for one as you can only claim it once but if you're getting the disability option on TC you will qualify. It isn't just the money although £67 a week is a start but also discounts on days out etc because you're a carer

My children are disabled! I didn’t want this post to be a post bashing those who do get it and don’t. In the last year people have been furloughed, those who are self employed have had grants, those on UC have had an extra £20 a month I think? We’ve had nothing and he’s worked the whole way through!!

So if you get child tax credit, we will get this? I'm confused. No mention or texts so far for me.

SallyAnn32 · 31/03/2021 18:54

@GravityFalls

No, Universal Credit is a different thing. UC is having an continued uplift for the time being as far as I know whereas tax credits are not, so the Tax Credits extra payment is to make up for the shortfall.
@GravityFalls ahh ok. Thank you for clarifying 🙂
lollipoprainbow · 31/03/2021 18:56

I get working tax and child credit but haven't received a text knowing my luck I'll get sod all !!!

Crappyfridays7 · 31/03/2021 18:56

Op did say her claim is mostly made up of DLA for her children hence why she gets tc and will be entitled to some wtc

I’m a nurse and I get it, I’m sure people just love to judge others. I got the text this evening hopefully I’ll get the £500 as having a bad month it’s not even April yet

It seems the texts are being randomly sent out. Seen that some people had them yesterday and others today so fingers crossed 🤞 you will do! I have a friend who will almost definitely meet the criteria and she has not received a text yet but certain she will!

The way I am reading it is that. Anyone who works and receives tax credits will get the payment. If you don't work and receive tax credits you won't.

MrsSnitchnose · 31/03/2021 19:23

I know it's a red top rag newspaper, but Martin Lewis seems to have clarified things www.mirror.co.uk/money/martin-lewis-explains-who-qualifies-23694937

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 31/03/2021 19:40

I believe it’s only for those who are in receipt of the Working Tax credits.
Hopefully anyway, those receiving it aren’t entitled to free school meals for their children, and didn’t get the help with the school meals/vouchers during the lockdown.

Magnificentmug12 · 31/03/2021 20:16

I’m getting it and I don’t get WTC.

Seems to be if someone works and also get WTC or CTC or both you will get it I rekon.

Basically do you work and receive any credits, (not universal credits) if so you will get it.

Yes exactly, many people on legacy benefits of ESA will not benefit at all and have seen no increase like those on Uc have. It was an ill thought out rise which i think the government will struggle to take away. Many people who have gone onto UC in the past year will have no idea that the actual standard element is £80 ish pound more than normal and are going to have a shock when it's taken away in September !

Yes I think it reads that if you meet the criteria for WTC, so you work the required hours to claim WTC then even if your income is higher than the WTC threshold you would still qualify for this one off payment. So those on tax credits who don't work, so may be on ESA or JSA or Income support due to not working will not qualify for this.

It's a bonus for families where at least one person works part time and the income is comparatively low. It isn't like it's a millionaires bonus. So yes some disabled people WILL get it.

Whether there about be a comparative bonus for people on PIP / carers isn't an unjustified discussion.
