£500 one off payment tax credits.

Apologies for not posting in the right area but thought it may reach a lot of people!

Dp got a text today to say that one off payments of £500 are being paid by 23rd April. I didn’t think we would be eligible. Is it just a generic text sent to everyone or just those entitled? I thought it was only for those on working tax credits, we only get child tax credits I believe.

To clarify. Dp works and has worked all the way through the pandemic and earns around £30,000 a year. I am currently a stay at home mum to out two children who both have additional needs. The bulk of our child tax credits are based on my children receiving disability living allowance rather than dp’s earnings. We do get some based on his earnings though.

I am really clueless 😂 I thought tax credits were eventually being changed over to universal credit too. We still get ‘tax credits’ and not universal credit.

Advice for a confused mum.

We own our own home and don’t get any other benefits apart from the DLA my children get and the tax credits (obviously child benefit too). £500 would be very appreciated!

Tia.

I don't get this as I'm sure some people get CTC through universal credit? I could be wrong but I thought most had switched over. Seems a bit unfair for those on UC who can claim CTC but got switched over.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 31/03/2021 23:42

Or maybe you can't get CTC on UC. I know you can get support for a child on UC but not sure if it's CTC. I don't get how benefits work so apologies if I make no sense Grin.

KingstonTownThePlaceILongToBe · 31/03/2021 23:55

@ThatsNotTheTeaHunty people on UC don't get CTC as they're different things. People on UC will get £500 but this will be as an £80 payment each month, due to how tax credits work they are unable to do that so claimants eligible will get a one off payment instead.

Ohh see that makes sense. Thank you!

@ThatsNotTheTeaHunty
Babyroobs Bizarre that people earning 30k a year would get this.

I thought this too confused.

But if you only think it's weird they're getting the bonus not the benefit, where do they draw the line? Well people claiming CTC but only those who claim under the threshold for free school meals who've already had help with school meals etc? There's a lot of people earning above that who are still finding it really tight

The thing is that people with a few kids who have been on tax credits since before the 2 child cap came in could have a pretty high income and still be eligible for child tax credits, so someone on 40k + could be eligible wheras sick people on basic ESA of £75 a week don't get the bonus ? That's what I don't understand. I think it was a very ill thought out attempt to appease people. It will be hugely hard to withdraw it from UC without causing an uproar. I think extra help for the most badly affected could have been targeted in other ways instead of a blanket Uc increase.

KilljoysDutch · 01/04/2021 00:53

OP I wasn't having a dig at you. I'm just annoyed at the situation - those on UC will get an extra £80 a month but it won't be going to anyone on ESA which is those of us who are disabled and also struggling on the same benefits but because we haven't switched over we don't count.

KilljoysDutch · 01/04/2021 00:55

Also I'm sorry for derailing your thread. I'm just angry at being ignored and left to struggle without any support. I wasn't switched over to UC because disabled people are going to be the last moved over so it's almost like we're being punished for being disabled.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/04/2021 00:56

If you haven't switched to UC do you not qualify for tax credits?

As I said earlier, it doesn't mean an argument isn't valid that there should be an equivalent for people on other benefit /. PIP / carers etc.

But then carers are so well paid they don't need to qualify for any other "benefit benefits" 🙄😂😩

Hidinginstaircupboard · 01/04/2021 01:00

I didn't get text nor heard anything about it
I earn £22k year , disabled lone parent of 3, earn too much for working tax credits
Get a bit of CTC
I'd love £500!!

Do you get CTC? If you were awarded WTC but then they did your salary and deducted it all, you should qualify. In your paperwork it actually says how much you'll get (ie £4k) and then something about deduction for income (£4k) and total 0. Then the same for CTC but £3kor whatever at the end. In that case I'm hoping we get it

If a disabled person is not working and does not have children then they wont qualify for tax credits, just ESA.

We don't get WTC just CTC. I can't work due to my disability and I'm not safe to be alone so DH is my carer.
Propagandalf · 01/04/2021 03:07

Be glad that you get £500, while us gig workers get Jack Schitt.

TheLazyWitch · 01/04/2021 03:22

"those on UC will get an extra £80 a month but it won't be going to anyone on ESA which is those of us who are disabled and also struggling on the same benefits but because we haven't switched over we don't count".

Does ESA not mean you can't work? I thought the payment was specifically for working families. So people with children, who work, but claim some UC or WTC?

Mammaaof · 01/04/2021 03:25

@TheLazyWitch no ESA means you can't work

It's shit isn't it, unfortunately always those on disability benefits that seem to miss out, my sister is the same, it's shameful.
TheLazyWitch · 01/04/2021 03:49

Mammaaof Have you applied for PIP?

Mammaaof · 01/04/2021 03:55

@TheLazyWitch yes I get pip

But l still don't understand 'you get the money if you qualify for WTC but don't get it because your income is too high'.

As WTC is a benefit for people with low incomes, and you don't get it because you're not on a low enough income, doesn't that mean that you don't qualify for it? Confused.

TheLazyWitch · 01/04/2021 04:30

Mammaaof, I've heard so many awful stories about people being turned down. I know it's not much, but it's good you get that bit extra at least.

glasslampshade · 01/04/2021 04:50

I’m worried that I won’t qualify as on 2nd March I wasn’t receiving wtc payment due to an overpayment, but did receive it for the tax year if you see what I mean....so I had gone online and adjusted my income figures and that meant that they had already paid me enough for the year but still entitled to them in the next tax year as on low income .....this was just before March 2nd, I’m kicking myself I didn’t wait in case this means I don’t qualify. I haven’t received the text.

midnightstar66 · 01/04/2021 05:48

I’m getting it and I don’t get WTC.

@Magnificentmug12 can I ask how you know? No one else does. Also if you don't qualify for WTC you didn't fit the criteria given on HMRC website

OP it sounds like you are eligible under the 'qualify for WTC but don't get it because income too high' category

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/04/2021 05:56

Will everyone who gets working tax credits get this? I have been getting working tax credits for the past 4 years but haven't heard anything.

Tink2007 · 01/04/2021 07:32

We get CTC but not WTC because our income is too high (though would be eligible if it wasn’t). We haven’t had a text but am wondering if we will get it as it’s this bit that is confusing me:

“ Child Tax Credit and were eligible for Working Tax Credit but you did not get a payment because your income is too high to get Working Tax Credit payments”
