School uniform yucky colours

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

Our primary is green.
Green pinafores with white shirts under, a green cardigan and green tights. The PE kit (they get given one when they start each year) is black leggings, a white t shirt and green hoody.
I love the green (no grass stains when she’s playing out), fairly easy to get and looks really smart.
I don’t like yellow (nursery uniform) as it went grey really fast. I like grey, navy, green mostly. Darker colours are better as they show less stains.

I dislike red or bright colours as it means I need to separate my colours when washing her uniform as they always leech out whereas with the green all of her uniform gets thrown in, pinafores and white shirts together.

@Honeydukesmum

I always wanted the home and away/neighbours uniform 😂
I love the tartan and also always loved their dresses.

A local school to me has purple/ grey and navy kilt, purple or navy polo and navy v neck.

Trousers are grey.

It looks so smart yet practical (this is secondary)

NeedSomeInfoAgain · 11/03/2021 19:40

If polo shirts were white and trousers/skirts were grey, I would like purple or red sweatshirts. If you're having red polos, then a navy or green sweatshirt would be cheerful. Overall, anything that would look warm, cheerful and practical on a cold day....life is grey enough so use the psychology of colour to warm it up! Also make sure summer dresses are available in that colour if the uniform includes them. And maybe choose different colour to neighbouring schools?

modgepodge · 11/03/2021 19:41

The first school I taught in was pale blue polo shirts with burgundy jumpers and the girls wore pink summer dresses. I loved that! Both my primary and secondary schools were navy with a white shirt which I just thought was beyond dull.

zxy12 · 11/03/2021 19:43

My least favourite would be yellow followed by bright green. My favourite would be purple.

Tangledtresses · 11/03/2021 19:44

One of my sons went to a primary school with burgundy sweatshirt with gold polo shirt and logo
It looked like a Chinese takeaway!! Bloody awful

@wasgoingmadinthecountry

I've seen a few posters say they like the joggers/sweatshirt combo with black trainers. Is that generally popular? As in no need to change for PE etc??

Thanks for all this by the way - hugely helpful!

I think joggers for infants is great and would love to see this as uniform.

Moving onto trousers, leggings or joggers (or skirt) for juniors as they like more choice and some may prefer not to wear joggers at this age.

Secondary I like trousers, skirts (the tartan ones) with polo and v neck sweatshirt.

thismeansnothing · 11/03/2021 19:44

There's a primary by us that wear. green jumpers. Which is fine. But it a red polo t-shirt they have to wear. I think it looks daft and the kids remind me of Xmas elves.

There's another primary that wears purple which looks nice but then if you need an emergency jumper for whatever reason you can't just.pick one up at Tesco or whatever.

DDs school wear red (as did I at primary). No problems with fading but they have to wear a proper Vneck jumper rather than a sweatshirt type jumper.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/03/2021 19:45

Navy or black Joggers
Coloured polo shirts (in a colour that your closest big supermarket stocks normally)
Jumper (same as shirt)
Black trainers

I would love that.

But most importantly...

No white
No white
No white
No white

Oh, and if you can, avoid white Grin

aintnothinbutagstring · 11/03/2021 19:47

Think practical, which colours and fabrics wash well, what about stains? So navy, black, bottle green, mid/dark grey. Common sense really. You can go to town with the school logo ☺️

TokyoSushi · 11/03/2021 19:47

Ours is blue, I'm pleased really, inoffensive and very easy to get hold of in any shop or supermarket.

I did see a school on FB that had navy skirt/trousers and jumper/cardigan with a red polo which looked lovely.

Anything on the yellow/brown scale is dreadful.

CoRhona · 11/03/2021 19:48

My first primary school many years ago had brown jumpers which were horrible. I've just looked at their website and they are now purple - also rank!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2021 19:48

@Poundaminute

The worst I have seen was a catholic primary school with brown trousers / skirts and yellow tops with brown jumpers 😬 Ks2 wear white shirts with brown and yellow ties.
One of my local Catholic schools has the same. It's hideous. We had black skirt and blazers with a yellow shirt. I loved it!
Marmite27 · 11/03/2021 19:48

I had Royal blue top / grey bottoms, Navy top / navy bottoms and black top and bottoms. All with a white shirt. Maroon & grey striped tie, burgundy tie and red & black striped tie respectively.

DC have brown tops and bottoms with white shirts and brown and yellow ties. Yellow sun dress. I didn’t like it at first but it’s growing on me. I think it helps that it suits both my DC’s colouring. They also like that it’s similar to the school uniform on Waffle the Wonder dog.

Tangledtresses · 11/03/2021 19:49

If hate to dress my kids in joggers!

Mine have grey shorts or trousers, light blue polos and navy sweat shirts or jumpers or cardigans there's a good choice

My son wears shorts in the snow... he'd hate wearing joggers all year round he'd boil

TerribleCustomerCervix · 11/03/2021 19:49

The Catholic Primary near us when I was at school had a brown uniform with orange shirts/ polo shirts. We called them the Jaffa Cakes.

There was a girls’ catholic senior school that had brown skirts and blazers and mint green shirts. Whoever picked that must’ve been smoking something.

aintnothinbutagstring · 11/03/2021 19:49

Combining with white shirts/polos is good as most supermarkets sell these, they can be replaced cheaply but can also be bleached.

Marmite27 · 11/03/2021 19:50

It seems most of the yellow and brown uniforms belong to catholic schools. As for it being hard to get hold of - Asda does everything in brown and yellow so it’s relatively easy to source. The only thing I struggled with was brown knee socks. But hurts allowed grey tights or white ankle socks.

LadyFuschia · 11/03/2021 19:51

Our school is red sweatshirts, white shirts. Looks really cheerful and smart. Red does show marker pen but is strong enough to cope, the shirts stay white more than polo shirts.

aintnothinbutagstring · 11/03/2021 19:51

Brown and yellow is the brownies uniform, so yeah if you want your kids to look like a brownies group on a school trip

peak2021 · 11/03/2021 19:52

Green or dark blue. Most of all, practical to wash and not too expensive.

RB68 · 11/03/2021 19:53

Teal is nice, would hate black or grey - life is boring enough

Maybe pale blue polos and navy sweat shirt

I would like to see primaries in joggers and shorts in the summer - nope no skirts or stiff trousers etc

Midnight0 · 11/03/2021 19:53

The dark green cardigans are ugly. Agree with a PP regarding the white polos - a pain to get clean.

Crappyfridays7 · 11/03/2021 19:53

At school mine was bottle green with a pink rose bloody horrible
My boys wear royal blue sweatshirts with joggies at the moment. Comfy and practical.

burningfire · 11/03/2021 19:54

Our primary have black trousers/skirt/dress, white poloshirt and red jumper/cardigan.

The secondary (same school) wear black at the bottom, white shirt, black blazer and red and white tie.

All ages look smart. Uniform is easy to buy from anywhere and no offensive colours.

A local primary/secondary have black, white and purple. Their uniform is horrendous.
