School uniform yucky colours

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 11/03/2021 19:09

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

No kilts. They lose their pleats and can look terrible. They also can’t be easily shortened. Often they aren’t very adjustable at the waist either.

bridgetreilly · 12/03/2021 15:51

Mustard.
Maroon.

Best colours:
Dark green
Dark purple
Navy

DS wears yellow, I wash it in colour protect liquid to try and stop it going a nasty colour (wash his shirts alone too)

I like a blue uniform personally

TrustTheGeneGenie · 12/03/2021 16:02

As a parent i would not like - any colour i cannot easily buy in a supermarket

ours is a blue jumper (fine) grey trousers (fine) and a green that you cannot buy anywhere but the uniform shop

i mean, we can afford it, but our school isnt in a brilliant area and i am sure many parents struggle.

UnderCaffeinated · 12/03/2021 16:32

I really only like blue or red (only with white though). I don't really mind green, and I'm not a fan of yellow. What I really dislike though is coloured polo shirts (prefer shirts anyway, but especially hate yellow polo shirts). I also think grey trousers/skirts look much nicer than black.

NotMeNoNo · 12/03/2021 16:51

To be honest reception/Y1 should wear black/navy just because of the permanent marker pens.

MumofSpud · 12/03/2021 16:55

My primary school uniform was yellow and brown.
My secondary school was grey and maroon (maroon blazer).
Chelsea girl (!!) only had fashionable school wear in black / blue and green.

There is a primary school local to me which has purple jumpers - sounds vile but they always look v smart!

Justjackie · 12/03/2021 17:15

North East girls school in the late 1970's......Orange and fawn! Picture that! It was for one term only and looked as horrid as it sounds...orange blouse, fawn pinafore and fawn socks 🤮

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 12/03/2021 17:33

justjackie mine was orange and brown. Nothing will ever be as bad as that!!

DS is at a private school. He can choose between a red, grey or navy polo shirt. Alternatively, he can wear a red, grey, navy or white t-shirt. On top, they can either wear a navy school hoody, navy school jumper or a navy hooded jacket.

They can wear whatever trousers, Jean's or skirt they like. Shoes are up to parents, too. I'm asking mine to make sure their kids can put them on independently. They wear slippers around the school building and need to change shoes.

carolinesbaby · 12/03/2021 17:45

My kids schools wear red sweatshirts with logos, white polos and grey skirts/trouser, and royal blue tops with light blue polos. That's primary. They look bright and cheerful. Local school has purple jumpers with teal polos and I love that combination, they stand out without being wacky.
My secondary school jumpers were awful maroon knitted acrylic monstrosities.

Holidaybookinghell · 12/03/2021 17:47

@Poundaminute that’s the colours my kids wear. I was horrified at first but they both actually suit it so much bless them.

pabloescobarselasticband · 12/03/2021 17:47

Yellow or brown are awful.

Zippea · 12/03/2021 17:55

I had brown and yellow at primary - it was the 80s

The best colours I’ve found are navy blue, red tops with white shirt and grey/black bottoms

Holidaybookinghell · 12/03/2021 17:57

I hated the brown and yellow when my kids first started school but I don’t even have any feelings towards it now.

NewYearmorestress · 12/03/2021 18:00

The high school I nearly went to had orange shirts/blouses and brown skirt, trousers and blazers... So glad we moved

CatkinToadflax · 12/03/2021 18:04

A school round here has green polo shirts with a navy sweatshirt with green logo. I think it looks great - both practical colours which look surprisingly nice together (though I think green and blue would look a bit odd as a combo without the logo on the sweatshirt bringing the two colours together).

Another school round here has a turquoise jumper, white shirt, and black, turquoise, silver and pink tie. It’s the most revolting colour combination I have ever seen. It’s properly eyesplitting.

AlwaysLatte · 12/03/2021 18:41

White shirts are brilliant. You can bleach them!
Off the topic I know, but can you? I didn't know. I can't put bleach in the washing machine though - what sort of dilution do you use? I'll put them in a bowl. I was about to throw a couple out!

DelphiniumBlue · 12/03/2021 18:47

I worked at a school where they had yellow polo shirts and maroon sweatshirts. Horrible.
I'd say the most important thing is sweatshirts out of decent material, not polyester which gets thin really quickly, doesn't keep you warm and is uncomfortable for children with eczema.

Talcott2007 · 12/03/2021 18:54

Yellow is the only bad choice really as it stains more easily than other more vibrant colours for your jumpers. The biggest thing for me as a parent with a reception age DD is the white polo shirts - they are so hard to keep white and get covered by pen/paint/food stains so easily. Yes they are relatively cheep to get from a supermarket bit it's a bit like false economy because i have had to replace so many un-rescue-able ones I'd much prefer a polo in an dark colour so they have more chance or staying clean looking and can be washed with the rest of the uniform bits rather than a white wash.

BlowDryRat · 12/03/2021 19:34

Yellow anything is the worst. It looks grubby and grey after a few washes and you get swarms of black insects settling on you.

Purple looks weird. A local school has turquoise: equally weird.

Navy blue is the smartest.

Hankunamatata · 12/03/2021 19:35

We have bright school yellow polos and they are awesome. Wash really well and can be washed at 60. Dont show muck like white. Grey, navy and yellow jumpers yuck

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 12/03/2021 20:07

Your comments have given me some great food for thought. Plus (and it's a big big plus for me!) there are 1001 reasons why yellow isn't a great choice.

My favourites are navy and burgundy. After that blue and red. Not keen on green or purple and I've never seen grey I don't think, though I love grey. Not yellow.
White shirts are the most classic but not the most practical. The light blue look very nice.
Bottoms black or grey are both nice.

I love school uniforms. My son wears trousers, proper shirt, tie and jumper. It's incredibly smart. I love it. I know most people say it's impractical, especially for reception but I don't think it is at all.

BornOnTwelthNight · 12/03/2021 20:23

My cousins dcs primary school (many years ago now) had an informal relaxed uniform of red yellow blue and jade green, jumpers and polo shirts (which could also be white) in any combination parents chose with navy or grey bottoms. I thought it was pretty cool to see a whole mix of primary colours bouncing round the playground. That school was very relaxed and informal, it was great!

I used to love the purple uniform as it was refreshing to see something different.
But where I live now all the schools are slowly turning purple (being taken over by the same trust!) and being given the exact same uniform. it’s really hard to differentiate which of the (now) many purple schools they go to.

My own dcs had burgundy/green jumpers with white shirts polos and grey bottoms started off as jade green but slowly over the years turned to bottle green. Which thankfully they’d left by then as I hated bottle green!

Brown has no place for school uniforms full stop!
