School uniform yucky colours

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 11/03/2021 19:09

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

Yellow band brown is the worst combination

Mummaofboys93 · 11/03/2021 19:31

Yellow is god awful, so is brown!
My DC are at different schools, both wear grey trousers. Oldest has a blue crew neck jumper & white poloshirt which doesn't look bad, youngest is Maroon vneck jumper, white shirt & Maroon the with dark yellow stripes. I didn't think I'd like it but he actually looks very smart.

vjg13 · 11/03/2021 19:32

Primary school changed to maroon sweatshirts in summer paired with red gingham Hmm

Poundaminute · 11/03/2021 19:32

No shirts or ties in primary school. Stick with polo tops.
I don't mind most colours tbh -just avoid yellow and brown!

RaspberryCoulis · 11/03/2021 19:32

My kids' primary school had grey skirts/trousers and royal blue sweatshirts. Really practical and you can get them anywhere.

The ones I don't like are the unusual colours like yellow, orange, purple, brown - things you can't get cheaply and easily.

Flowerlane · 11/03/2021 19:32

We have had yellow which was lovely in the summer.
We currently have purple and that too looks good.

I had green when I was younger and it was horrible, green blazer and green skirt personally feel it was the worst colour.

Slankets · 11/03/2021 19:32

A school by me has brown jumpers with yellow polo shirts, its awful.

Skysblue · 11/03/2021 19:32

Pale brown has gotta be the worst, I used to know a school that used it.

My child cried over the uniform colour when he started school - navy. Children like cheerful colours. If I could choose I’d do red, or green, or bright blue. Not navy at primary, the kids look like they’re dressed for a funeral.

My old school said children could wear any item of (non logo) clothes in school colours of white, grey or red. This worked brilliantly.

Something that is a problem for boys is they have no way to express themselves with their uniform at our school. The girls can choose between a skirt or a dress, long sicks or short, and the dresses are available with a variety of cute metal charms at the neck - butterfly, star etc. Girls can also accessorise their hair in school colours. The boys get zero way to express themselves and it upsets them.

Eg2016 · 11/03/2021 19:33

Yellow and grey are the worst in my opinion
I think red is the best by far

Skysblue · 11/03/2021 19:33

Also what is the point of ties? Especially for girls? Ridiculous. Just another item to lose / waste money on.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/03/2021 19:33

Are you in an area where most of the kids get their uniform from Asda? Are you going to insist it's a school one with the school badge on?
If they are allowed to buy supermarket versions, I'd stick to traditional colours - yellow CNA be tricky as there's pale yellow and gold yellow, red I'd be mindful of fading.

Ours is yellow sweatshirt and navy jumper. Means o can pick up his uniform anywhere really.

I do think purple looks nice, don't like brown

NotOnMute · 11/03/2021 19:33

It’s hard (and expensive) to find gingham summer dresses in the odd colours like yellow abs purple, you have to go to M&S. so please make the summer dresses blue (can usually find royal or navy easily in the supermarkets). And basics like trousers / skirts in black, navy or grey (and don’t be picky on the shade of grey) because that’s what supermarkets stock.

Whatwhyhowwherewho · 11/03/2021 19:33

School near us has bright yellow polo shirts and purple jumpers - hideous!

TillyTopper · 11/03/2021 19:34

Light colours, especially white, are worst.

RoomAtTheEndOfTheWorld · 11/03/2021 19:34

Yellow looks horrible after a while.
Also attracts all the bugs in the summer!

I saw a friends DS who started school in September uniform was black trousers, white polo shirt and black sweatshirt with school logo. Thought all black was quite practical.

Mine as a child was red. Flexible to get bits in the supermarket which I know my mum appreciated!
DS's school is pretty flexible but his school colours are burgundy. I find this fine. I buy the school logo branded burgundy polo shirts rather than cheap supermarket ones in white as they always need ironing and get stained!

LilacsFreesias · 11/03/2021 19:34

I saw a uniform with bright yellow shirt and brown skirt. Not nice

GuyFawkesDay · 11/03/2021 19:34

Mine was orange and brown. It was hideous.

I looked like a Jaffa cake.

SusannahSophia · 11/03/2021 19:35

Blue is the best, royal blue, nice and bright. I don’t mind white polo shirts if you have enough to do a whites only wash, otherwise they go grey. Purple is supposed to suit everyone but it looks a bit babyish on 11 year olds, IMO.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/03/2021 19:36

I really loathe the colour burgundy. Don't know why.

NailsNeedDoing · 11/03/2021 19:37

Yellow is awful, and I’m not keen on red either. Dark blue/navy or dark green would be my preferred options as they hide the inevitable dirt better and they look smart.

LilacsFreesias · 11/03/2021 19:37

Did you go to Malory Towers @GuyFawkesDay ? Wink

School uniform yucky colours
Skysblue · 11/03/2021 19:37

If I could choose, I’d tell primary children they can wear any colour of polo shirt (see the lovely colour polos range at m&s), no tie, with black jogger trousers or skirt, and any colour plain hoody. British schools tend to look a century behind the times, no idea why.

And NO SCHOOL LOGO on the clothes it triples the price and reduces quality.

Oo just realised worst colour - bright yellow! A bright yellow genuinely attracts bees and wasps.

SchoolMarks · 11/03/2021 19:38

I’d imagine white is easiest to wash / get stains out with bleach.

We had a choice of dark green or dark red polos and a grey jumper. I liked that we could choose!

I wouldn’t like yellow, stains too easily and looks scruffy and faded quite quickly.

Which colours are cheapest? Which are most readily available?

itsgettingwierd · 11/03/2021 19:38

@CreamRose

I could be wrong but I’m sure it’s red and green! Wasn’t that why Freddie Krueger wore a red and green jumper!
It could be either or both 🤷‍♀️

We just get taught what our elders told us!

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 11/03/2021 19:38

I've seen a few posters say they like the joggers/sweatshirt combo with black trainers. Is that generally popular? As in no need to change for PE etc??

Thanks for all this by the way - hugely helpful!
