Crusty end slices of bread...

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 12:51

...never get eaten in our household and languish in our fridge.

Any ideas what to do with them?
Hate the thought of throwing them away, such a waste of food.
We buy wholemeal (the mass produced kind, rather than artisan) and don’t own a food processor, if either makes a difference.

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Thanks

Eat them?

halcyondays · 07/03/2021 12:52

Toast them, eat them, don’t be fussy.

Nemesia · 07/03/2021 12:52

Make Melba toast with them? Mine will eat Melba toast made from the heels but won't eat the heels toasted 🤔

YesItsAPeacock · 07/03/2021 12:52

Any stale ends of bread I have I put in the freezer until I need breadcrumbs for something (eg meatballs). You should be able to crumb them without a food processor if you dry them in the oven first.

UhtredRagnarson · 07/03/2021 12:52

You mean the heel?? Grin

DanielRicciardosSmile · 07/03/2021 12:53

They mostly get used for toast in my house. Especially when they're thicker than a "normal" slice.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/03/2021 12:53

Why don't you eat them? I love them, always have. I use them just like the other slices, especially in beans on toast.

If you really can't bear eating them as bread, you could make them into breadcrumbs. I do that in a food processor, but it's not difficult without one.

HilaryBriss · 07/03/2021 12:54

The crusts are the best bit for making lovely toast!

And people keep bread in the fridge?? (misses the point of the thread)

Whatthechicken · 07/03/2021 12:54

I think crusts make the best toast, especially with cheese on, or beans or egg.

DavidsSchitt · 07/03/2021 12:54

You keep bread in the fridge?

askmeagainin5 · 07/03/2021 12:55

It’s the best bit! We need to set up some kind of donation scheme because we all fight over the ends of the loaf here Grin

Make some garlic butter, spread it on and pop them in the oven - fan favourite here!

halcyondays · 07/03/2021 12:55

Dunk them in soup.

Bluntness100 · 07/03/2021 12:55

Why’s your bread in the fridge?

MySocalledLoaf · 07/03/2021 12:56

Croutons?

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/03/2021 12:57

Breadcrumb and freeze.

GrallaceandWomit · 07/03/2021 12:57

They get soaked in water and fed to the hens. You could soak them and feed them to the birds?

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/03/2021 12:58

Buy a cheap mini chopper and make your own bread crumbs. Bake for 10 at 150 if they’re not getting fine enough. Store in a sealed then sprinkle on anything you top with cheese and grill. (Except cheese on toast).

SpnBaby1967 · 07/03/2021 12:58

Oh my, the crusts toasted and slathered with an unreasonable amount of proper butter is a snack that is heaven sent.

You're missing out OP.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 07/03/2021 12:58

Freeze - use as bread crumbs.
Cut into cubes or strips and add oil and seasonings, make into croutons or crusts in an air fryer.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 07/03/2021 12:59

Grind up, add grated cheese, freeze - use as mac cheese or cauliflower cheese topping.

peak2021 · 07/03/2021 13:04

Toast or just eat them.

Gindrinker43 · 07/03/2021 13:06

Bird food

steppemum · 07/03/2021 13:07

well - 1. bread kept int he fridge actually tastes stale more quickly. (I thought this was just me until someone said it ona cooking programe)

  1. the best toast is the heel.

But I sympathise as I hate sandwiches using heels.
If you make french toast/eggy bread, no-one noticed the heels

DinosaurDiana · 07/03/2021 13:09

The crust is the best bit !

HeronLanyon · 07/03/2021 13:09

I freeze sliced bread and over the years these heels have become so thick ! Often more than twice as thick as a slice. No having to thaw first and slice to be left with a ‘normal’ heel.
I use them exactly as a slice (toast/sandwich etc) except wouldn’t do French toast with one as egg wouldn’t soak in as well.
