Crusty end slices of bread...

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 12:51

...never get eaten in our household and languish in our fridge.

Any ideas what to do with them?
Hate the thought of throwing them away, such a waste of food.
We buy wholemeal (the mass produced kind, rather than artisan) and don’t own a food processor, if either makes a difference.

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Thanks

Why not keep your bread in the fridge? It stops it going mouldy.

emilyfrost · 07/03/2021 13:47

Don’t be so precious and just throw them away.

And Chat has just as much traffic as AIBU and would be more appropriate for your question.

Aprilx · 07/03/2021 13:48

Bleurgh at calling it a heel, it is the crust! I don’t mind it toasted, wouldn’t have as a sandwich. I don’t use breadcrumbs much but I might try that in future. In all honesty though, it normally gets thrown away, it is only two a week.

I don’t know why anyone would put bread in the fridge, I wouldn’t want to allocate the space for a start.

MuddleMoo · 07/03/2021 13:49

They don't taste that different to the rest of the bread.

If not wanting to waste food is being precious then I am happy to continue being precious.

I keep bread in the fridge and use the ends for dipping in soup.

Fridge space is not an issue

Eggy bread, bread and butter pudding, breadcrumbs, bread pudding, Simon Hopkins bread salad ( though better with sour dough) , toast, fried bread in bacon fat.

If you don't want to waste them then just eat them. It's hard to turn them into something they are not.
EatingAllThePies · 07/03/2021 13:58

As others have already said we freeze them and then use straight from the freezer for breadcrumbs but that's only if we haven't toasted them. We would only throw bread out if it was mouldy as we make our own and it's nice!

Apparently not!

I would eat them toasted, make breadcrumbs, eat toasted with cream cheese or Nutella or jam, or make cheese on toast.

Re: fridge - we don’t tend to have sandwiches, just toast a couple of times a week, so fridge is fine and stops the mould of the uneaten/never-to-be-eaten “heel” (never knew it was called that!)
From google: Never keep your bread in the fridge. The starch molecules in bread recrystallize very quickly at cool temperatures, and causes the bread to stale much faster when refrigerated. Shop-bought loaves should be kept in an air-tight plastic bag at room temperature rather than in the fridge.

Like many others, I just stick it in the freezer when I get home from the shop and then take out however many slices I want when I'm eating it and stick it in the toaster. Or if I am not toasting it, it takes about 10 minutes for the slices to defrost.

The two crusts are best eaten as a cheese toastie in my opinion. Especially if they are thicker than a regular slice.

MuddleMoo · 07/03/2021 14:03

Even mushed up they are still the end bit of bread

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/03/2021 14:03

Why do you keep bread in the fridge? That's just weird!

MirandaMarple · 07/03/2021 14:04

Love a crust. More bang for your buck.

Feed to the birds. Breadcrumbs.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/03/2021 14:05

Sorry. Posted too soon.

The fridge speeds up the decay process. I thought everyone kept their bread in the microwave!

It’s two slices of bread 😂😂
FrankiesKnuckle · 07/03/2021 14:12

You're all wrong.

It's called the NOBBY.

Best bit of any loaf, literally a bun fight growing up for who would get it.
My mum had an amazing shape shifting trick where she could get her whole hand down to the bottom nobby without disturbing the rest of the loaf.

WeeWillyWanky · 07/03/2021 14:16

I knew my DH and I were the perfect math because he hates the crusts which means I always get them. They are the best bit of the loaf. He also hates skin on custard and rice pudding which to me is madness.

WeeWillyWanky · 07/03/2021 14:17

match not math

1forAll74 · 07/03/2021 14:21

I eat the crusts, usually as toast, If I have any of the artisan type bread, sometimes the crusts are a bit hard, so I break it up for the birds on the bird feeder. or eat it if I am having some soup.

DareDevil223 · 07/03/2021 14:22

It's the best bit of the loaf and it isn't a crust, end or heel. It's a nobby.

Hidinge · 07/03/2021 14:25

Ends here are for peanut butter. If you can't do that then feed to birds

AlwaysLatte · 07/03/2021 14:34

I keep them in the fridge then every few days run up a batch of breadcrumbs, freeze them and use them frozen - I used some for lunch today to make fishcakes!
