Crusty end slices of bread...

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 12:51

...never get eaten in our household and languish in our fridge.

Any ideas what to do with them?
Hate the thought of throwing them away, such a waste of food.
We buy wholemeal (the mass produced kind, rather than artisan) and don’t own a food processor, if either makes a difference.

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Thanks

People call the end of a loaf the heel!?

That makes me feel physically sick 🤢

VeganVeal · 07/03/2021 13:09

As per PP, bread in the FRIDGE????? Are you mad????

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 13:10

Thought it was too obvious to say that none of us like eating them!! But clearly not.

Feeding birds is a good idea - are they ok for birds? I know local parks say it’s no good for their water fowl. Also didn’t want to attract rats.

Thumbs up also for croutons and may invest in a mini-blitzer - don’t have the space for proper size one.

They are the nicest part of the loaf, we fight over them here lol. They are amazing toasted!!

kooked · 07/03/2021 13:11

God, I've got jaw-ache just thinking about baguette ends!
I'll admit I leave mine. Fed to our (various) animals, our hens love to peck and scratch at them.

flappityflippers1 · 07/03/2021 13:12

Another one questioning bread in the fridge?! What?!

I hate the heels too and shamefully bin them, they never get eaten or used.

Never ever thought of using them for breadcrumbs - what a muppet! I make a nut roast a few times a month that I use breadcrumbs in... will be taking the PP tip of freezing the ends and using those!

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 13:18

Re: fridge - we don’t tend to have sandwiches, just toast a couple of times a week, so fridge is fine and stops the mould of the uneaten/never-to-be-eaten “heel” (never knew it was called that!)

Make bread pudding. My kids were always a bit 'meh' when I was making it but polished it off in hours. Amazing with custard too.

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 13:19

@imyournextdoorneighbour - does wholemeal work in bread and butter pud?

OP posts:
maddiemookins16mum · 07/03/2021 13:22

My mum used to keep them in the freezer. They make really good bread and butter pudding and also she’d use them for toast when something hot was going on top, beans, scrambled egg etc. They also work well for eggy bread.

daisyjgrey · 07/03/2021 13:23

Fridge bread is all kinds of confusing.

TheWitchersWife · 07/03/2021 13:24

They are my favourite, I dig to the bottom of the pack when I have a sandwich or toast. But I'm the only one growing up in my house, and now in my own household of 4 who have ever enjoyed it. I prefer it over the rest of the loaf.

MuddyWalks · 07/03/2021 13:25

Toast

iklboo · 07/03/2021 13:25

'Heel' is regional I think. It's the crust in our house. DH makes sure they get eaten. But, yes to croutons, freeze for breadcrumbs, bread & butter pudding etc.

Supmama · 07/03/2021 13:26

Bread in the fridge gets dried out I have a friend who insists its the done thing

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 13:26

Never realised fridge bread was so controversial!
Ours would go mouldy before we could finish a loaf, esp in the summer, as one loaf would last a week or more. I guess if you used them for sandwiches then it wouldn’t be great from the fridge.

@UhtredRagnarson

You mean the heel?? Grin
No, it's "the crust" 😂😂
namechangetheworld · 07/03/2021 13:29

Nobody will eat them here so we crumble them up and leave them out for the birds, or feed them to the horses behind our house.

FolkyFoxFace · 07/03/2021 13:29

They're the best bit! Toasted with loads of butter, and (controversial in our house but I love it!) dunked in a nice cup of tea!

CatChant · 07/03/2021 13:30

Turn them into breadcrumbs and freeze them.

I use them in bread puddings, stuffings, cakes, meat balls, potato cakes etc. They are incredibly useful.

NotReallyTheVicar · 07/03/2021 13:30

Send them to me!

I hope they're your horses. The owners won't appreciate that otherwise.
Queenfreak · 07/03/2021 13:34

@CatChant cakes?

Diesse · 07/03/2021 13:39

The best bit! Toast and smother with butter

Garman · 07/03/2021 13:43

You should freeze it in the first place so and just toast it from there. I keep the heels in a bag in the freezer and make breadcrumbs when I have a good few, then keep them in the freezer for goujons, stuffing, etc.
