Crusty end slices of bread...

noworklifebalance · 07/03/2021 12:51

...never get eaten in our household and languish in our fridge.

Any ideas what to do with them?
Hate the thought of throwing them away, such a waste of food.
We buy wholemeal (the mass produced kind, rather than artisan) and don’t own a food processor, if either makes a difference.

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Thanks

Only I eat crusts here so they mostly get broken up for the birds. We throw loads of bits on our garage room for the local birds. DH gets upset if I use the crust because it means they miss out.
I also don't keep bread in the fridge. It makes it go stale faster

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 07/03/2021 14:41

Make cheese on toast with a really nice tasty stretchy cheese, then cut it into strips and dip it into something e.g a nice soup/egg yolk/baked beans beans

axile234 · 07/03/2021 14:44

I give mine to a couple of crows who come every morning at work . The little buggers have half my lunch to . Mainly because I feel sorry for um . And I'm a big softie lol

CustardySergeant · 07/03/2021 14:45

The crusts are my favourite.

nonevernotever · 07/03/2021 14:47

I hate eating them too op, but (if dh leaves any) I turn them into breadcrumbs or croutons and make things like cheese pudding, anna wings cheese and vegetable roast, veggie sausage rolls or just toppings on things like macaroni cheese

ParkheadParadise · 07/03/2021 14:48

The outsiders are the best part esp on a plain loaf.
Square sausage on a toasted outsider piece is 👍

sunflowersandbuttercups · 07/03/2021 14:49

@namechangetheworld

Nobody will eat them here so we crumble them up and leave them out for the birds, or feed them to the horses behind our house.
Please don't do this. It could kill them.

Toast. . Some lovely pate and a glass of wine!!

Oh yes. This is my favourite. I can't remember where I got the recipe
from but it's very easy. You can serve it hot with cream/custard/ice cream as a pudding or cold as a cake.

Chocolate Breadcrumb Pudding/Cake

225g/8oz dark chocolate,
225g/8oz soft dark brown sugar,
225g/8oz softened butter,
6 eggs,
225g/8oz ground almonds,
225g/8oz breadcrumbs,

Melt chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. In a separate bowl beat the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly. Mix in the melted chocolate, ground almonds and breadcrumbs. Bake in a 8 1/2" souffle dish for 20 - 25 minutes at 190°C or gas mark 5.

It's very rich so a little goes a long way. Having said that, it tends to disappear fairly quickly.

Maverick66 · 07/03/2021 15:06

I want to know what you eat instead of sandwiches..

MrsBotibolsCruise · 07/03/2021 15:06

Croutons! Cut them into small cubes, cover in olive oil then bake in the oven or fry till golden. Lovely in soup or salads. Or tasty just as they are.

Alreadyinmypyjamas · 07/03/2021 15:10

It's the best bit. What a waste.

ChippyChickenChips · 07/03/2021 15:32

We eat them because it's bread. I can't imagine why you wouldn't. Or why you'd keep it in the fridge. It goes stale quicker

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 07/03/2021 15:39

@FolkyFoxFace

They're the best bit! Toasted with loads of butter, and (controversial in our house but I love it!) dunked in a nice cup of tea!
I love toast dunked in tea!

We called it the outsider growing up & it depended on the loaf what happened to it - pan bread with butter was used to dip into tomato soup but plain bread was absolutely heaven toasted (properly under the grill not in a toaster) with a pound of butter slathered on it.

SausageCrush · 07/03/2021 16:08

Give them to the birds...

isseys4xmastinselcats · 07/03/2021 16:23

i never get the crusts here my OH snaffles them before i get chance

Popcornbetty · 07/03/2021 16:32

Toasted and slathered in butter with a poached egg, or have with soup. If all is lost and it goes stale make bread crumbs!

Dowser · 07/03/2021 16:44

Toast with cheese that bites back

PattyPan · 07/03/2021 16:46

Keeping bread in the fridge makes it stale quicker but stops it going mouldy as fast. We keep excess bread in the freezer as it doesn’t get as stale whilst also preventing mould.

@Maverick66 I don’t eat sandwiches very much. I usually eat soup for lunch if it’s cold or salad if it’s warm. We basically only use sliced bread for making toast too.

InDreamland · 07/03/2021 16:46

Ours get turned into croutons. Yummy!

HeyGepetto · 07/03/2021 16:51

You really shouldn’t feed horses bread Shock
BobbinThreadbare123 · 07/03/2021 17:06

DH eats the nob-end of the loaf as toast. Birds and horses should not eat bread.

Garman · 07/03/2021 17:12

The nob-end?? 😂😂

BobbinThreadbare123 · 07/03/2021 17:23

@Garman damn right. I enjoy the askance looks on people's faces when I call it that. My Irish nan always called it so and it stuck Grin
