AIBU to be sad about the wrong cake

My husband just brought back cake for us all from the cafe. Chocolate for him and one child; sponge for the other child; bakewell for me. I hate bakewell.

In his defence, he knew one of us liked it - the child with sponge cake who does like bakewell was already halfway through his slice.

We've been together nearly 20 years and he doesnt know that I would never choose that!

So AIBU to be feeling down over something so trivial?

I think feeling sad is a bit OTT, yes.

PurpleDaisies · 05/02/2021 15:03

Does he like bakewell? Just swap.

You might be blowing this a bit out of proportion.

How did he respond when you told him you don’t like it?

Pootles34 · 05/02/2021 15:03

Yes! In the nicest possible way, lockdown is getting to you, as it is to us all.

The answer is surely to steal his chocolate cake?

GreenSlide · 05/02/2021 15:04

Go to the shop and get yourself an entire Victoria sponge or chocolate fudge cake.

SeeYouInAnotherLife · 05/02/2021 15:05

You’re blowing this out of proportion, I think. Easy to do - we’re all on edge at the moment.

He tried to do a nice thing and got mixed up. That’s all. Don’t make it bigger than it is.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/02/2021 15:06

Had he already eaten his? Bakewell is the devil’s work, it’s grim. I’d have told him he’d got it wrong and asked to swap.

5foot5 · 05/02/2021 15:06

YABU for hating Bakewell. It's a lovely little town.

There is something called Bakewell pudding which originates there.
There is also something called Bakewell Tart and I am not sure where that originates from. Mr Kipling probably.
They are quite different.

Which did you get (and hate?) And why? What is not to like about it?

KrisAkabusi · 05/02/2021 15:08

Slightly annoyed maybe reasonable. Sad is an overreaction.

SummerHouse · 05/02/2021 15:08

I literally wept in the aisle over cake once. DP was morto. I was pregnant though....

DiscoGlitterBall · 05/02/2021 15:08

My mum has known me for 40 odd years and still tries to give me tomatoes!!! I think it’s one of those brain blocks!

Mind you it was cake which is unforgivable and Blackwell is disgusting!!!

This OP. Also, why isn’t he eating the Bakewell?
Oblomov21 · 05/02/2021 15:10

I get this. Sometimes Dh sweetly buys me stuff. But stuff I really expect him to know I don't like. There is very very little I don't like. And I'll eat almost anything out of politeness.

But. There are certain things I like most. And certain things I don't really care for. And I expect him to remember.

I like plain New York cheesecake.
I like all cakes, coffee, lemon, plain, but not keen on chocolate cake.

So if he only bought me a chocolate cake I'd be miffed. As in, that's the one thing I don't like, how could you forget?

iklboo · 05/02/2021 15:10

Maybe OP doesn't like chocolate cake? I don't - or bakewell type cakes either.

jay55 · 05/02/2021 15:11

I'm allergic to bakewell so would also be mighty annoyed and fed up.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 05/02/2021 15:11

LTB.

Leave the Bakewell.

Send DH back to shop for more cake.

PurpleDaisies · 05/02/2021 15:11

@jay55

I'm allergic to bakewell so would also be mighty annoyed and fed up.
Well, that’s a slightly different situation to not liking it.
Goodbye2020Helllo2021 · 05/02/2021 15:11

BTW Not at all unreasonable to feel sad, angry AND tearful over this injustice.
What on earth was he thinking?

Aprilx · 05/02/2021 15:12

When I was about thirty (twenty years ago), nut allergies had been in the news quite a bit. I was due to visit my parents and my mother, who did raise me, asked me if I was allergic to nuts.
Eeeeeeeeeeeek · 05/02/2021 15:16

I'd be a bit pissed off too, it's not hard to buy three cakes that you know everyone will like

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 05/02/2021 15:18

I’d be miffed too. I’m a coeliac and have been for years. Its scary how many people who know we well try and feed me gluten

Summerdayshaze · 05/02/2021 15:19

God I love Bakewell. YABU.

But I would be livid.

DavidsSchitt · 05/02/2021 15:23

YANBU. I know how you feel, it's not the cake it's the fact he can't be arsed to remember a simple fact about you.

DP offered me a jelly bean last night. Wanker

SnuggyBuggy · 05/02/2021 15:24

I'd be miffed

Cailleach1 · 05/02/2021 15:26

Swap half the bakewell for half the sponge that child has left. Then swap the other half of the bakewell (or quarter it out) for the corresponding measurement of the chocolate cakes. Quickly. Get everyone to leave their forks down at once before it becomes an irredeemable situation.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 05/02/2021 15:27

Yes I'd find this annoying too. Everybody else got something they liked and you got the one thing you don't like. He could've just got something he knew everybody liked. Once again mum gets the bum deal.
