AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

Those benches don't look terribly comfortable to me.

They don't do they so we got the single armchairs instead. Super comfortable 🙂

@freezingkalt

I would based on the two people I know that have very similar

Do I detect a little bit of jealousy there 😂😂😂. Just a little bit maybe....

OwlBeThere · 02/02/2021 14:43

Absolutely not Grin

Why do people think people are jealous of garden furniture? I have my own, that I love...

torquewench · 02/02/2021 14:53

My friends had a set. The glass top on their coffee table/box thingy had a greenhouse effect on said table and it melted in the sun leaving a huge hole in the top. Their cat uses it for sunbathing in now.

LimpLettice · 02/02/2021 14:55

Vulgar Grin

We have several. And lights. And a summerhouse. Big rattan corner sofa, 8 seater dining set, small rattan bench seat and coffee table and seating round the biggest tree trunk. We eat 2 or 3 meals a day out there as soon as the weather allows and bbq several times a week for ten months of the year. It all looks nice. It hasn't skewered anyone, we aren't really overlooked so you'd have to really try hard to be offended by how tacky you think it all is. We also have fruit and veg, a million hanging baskets, blackberries and a trampoline. Disgusting!

Bumblebee1980a · 02/02/2021 15:02

Sounds awful @LimpLettice 😂😂😂

Bumblebee1980a · 02/02/2021 15:08

@freezingkalt

Yes that thought did pop into my head after reading your comment regarding the furniture. In answer to your other question no I don't think I've ever thought anyone could possibly be jealous of someone else's outdoor furniture but then I see this thread and your comment 😆.

You say it's tacky based on the people you know who are tacky. Maybe you need to surround yourself with less 'tacky' people.

GreenlandTheMovie · 02/02/2021 15:12

Those metal chairs look like something you'd have in your garden, forgotten about for the last 20 years and covered in rust/weeds, only for some photographer for a magazine to come along and take a photograph of them as "rustic chic". Meanwhile, they are never used and you actually sit on the rattan out the back...

Mind you, I do have lots of irrational hates too - decking (slippy), patios (just don't what they are for), monobloc driveways (slippy), pea gravel in the wrong place for show, fake Japanese styled plastic wood effect garden things including silly little bridges (that one is very specific), artificially created ponds (waste of grazing/lawn) and Belfast sinks. Surely they are water troughs for want of a better word? But some people like them, we all have different preferences.

LimpLettice · 02/02/2021 15:17

@Bumblebee1980a Oh just dreadful! You can't imagine the horror of the kids lazing around reading on the sofa, friends drinking gin round the table and all the extended family eating and enjoying the summer. Simply hideous, darling. Grin

Shout out to the post 'snobbery' relating to this thread 😂

We have similar. All of us with the plastic sofas can get together and drink copious amounts of wine on them whilst the vulgar and tacky brigade seethe in the background 😂
Bumblebee1980a · 02/02/2021 15:44

@LimpLettice

Oh I'd much rather laze around on my tacky furniture sipping on a cucumber martini 🍸

What must I look like.

I'd definitely join you on your awful furniture for a gin and maybe we could invite all the other tacky furniture people too 😆🙃 and have a huge tacky furniture party (post covid).

The others could watch from their posh (not really) French rustic (ahem rusty metal) chairs.

Apologies I'm being silly now 😆

Cant choose your in-laws!

LimpLettice · 02/02/2021 15:53

A big virtual Mumsnet fest of gin soaked vulgarity. Kids making that vile bouncing noise on the trampolines, teens (gasp) lounging in a horribly common fashion, somewhere stable to put our super tacky outdoor dinnerware. Sounds bloody marvellous. Are you sure you wouldn't prefer to be sitting bolt upright in an icy cold, rusted iron chair with your ankles delicately crossed, sipping tea?

Katiepoes · 02/02/2021 16:12

Gin- soaked vulgarity sounds like an excellent party theme.

TheKeatingFive · 02/02/2021 16:14

Gin soaked vulgarity ...

In the sex pond perchance?

Sounds great

OhBabooahka · 02/02/2021 17:39

Hurrah are we having a Zoom with us all sat on our dreadful furniture sipping alcohol?

It's been a very boring day so this sounds marvellous.

Who's in charge of the booze trolley?

Bangable · 02/02/2021 19:06
**@Janegrey333 what in earth are you blathering on about?

The Georgians? What the fuck has that time period got to do with comfy outdoor sofas?

You really do seem to be quite a bizarre person with your comments on this and the snobbish thread.

Off you pop to lace your corset up to prevent you from such uncivilised antics such as sofa slobbing.
Grin Grin

@Janegrey333's bizarre posts do make for entertaining reading, it's as if she's swallowed the Debrett's handbook

Bangable · 02/02/2021 19:14

@Bluntness100

@Janegrey333 this feels like madness. Are plastic rattan sofas really the hill you want to die on? It feels like it is and I can’t grasp why*

@Janegrey333 famously does this on other threads about taste and property, i quite like it, it’s funny

Jane, sorry I do suspect you’re in a one bedroom run down flat or your parents basement, amusing yourself

The same image I have Grin amusing really as it's the total opposite of what Jane wants you to believe Grin

1950swallpaper · 06/02/2021 16:20

@UnityUnited

You sound lovely OP. I do hope you are moving next door to me.
No because it looks like it isn't plastic.

How do you know I can't change? Do you have some psychic access to my world? I've got so much dosh I'm in the process of buying a house with cash. Believe me, I can afford tacky plastic furniture. It is not jealousy

Would you call this tacky then...

Opps - I clicked the wrong quote button. But no. It is not my style but I don't think it is tacky because it doesn't appear to be made out of plastic.
