AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

@Marinaloves
They are common
Really common
I get you op

Thank you ;)

To those who think I'm a hideous sad snob - Do you like avocado bathroom suites? I'm sure you despise some of my tastes too but I can take it!

I still hate plastic fake wicker garden sofas.....

Absolutely we all have different tastes, be a funny old world if we were all alike. However, to make value judgments about people based on their differing tastes - that's where I'm going to part company with you!

GreenlandTheMovie · 31/01/2021 20:26

@Janegrey333

The one who hasn't left her house for 3 years, is in her thirties and still lives with her parents.

You find that amusing? Wow. She might have a mental health issue, for all you know. Or care.

Oh, I'm pretty sure that they all do, but no, I don't find it particularly amusing. I find it sad but not my circus, not my monkeys.

I'm actually much nicer to her than she deserves, considering what she gets up to. Not that she appreciates it.

It isn't you, is it? This is one of the weird sort of things she would do. She has absolutely no self awareness. In her world, only she and her parents exist, everyone else is inferior and there to be criticised as not being exactly the same as they are.

You really should try to lighten up and try to park your precious backside upon a piece of modern rattan garden furniture, even if only for 5 minutes. You never know, you might enjoy it!

As I said above before declaring my love for the giant onion, our corner sofa in the garden with dining table is not plastic ta very much.

So unless you go round every house inspecting their plasticiness, I'm unsure how you can hate everyone's furniture.

empiricallyyours · 31/01/2021 20:41

@1950swallpaper still not sure where you get that people with said sofas are 'smug' though? Please explain the perceived smugness.

1950swallpaper · 31/01/2021 20:47

Just to clarify. Nowhere have I called people common or vulgar. It is the furniture I was describing, not the people.

Am I envious of people with such awful furniture? Err no because I can't be envious of anyone having something that I hate.

What do I sit on in the garden? Garden chairs, sun loungers or a picnic blanket. The last house I owned had a lovely garden although the plastic sofa brigade would have hated it. It was very natural with lots of trees. I especially liked to sit under the huge yew. I'm now temporarily in a rented house with an awful garden and none of my neighbours have hideous garden furniture but I wouldn't care if they did. None of my neighbours had hideous garden furniture (that I noticed) in my last place either.

It is all a matter of personal taste but I'm reassured to know that about 30% of people share my view and I am not alone.

Now, as for fake plastic grass .........

What will happen to all that plastic when the fashion changes. Landfill?

So what caused you to start your thread op?

And yes, I don’t like avocado bathroom suites..😃

mbosnz · 31/01/2021 20:53

I think you're splitting hairs m'dear.

In your description of the furniture, unless you're anthropomorphising the furniture, you're ascribing values and motivations to the people who are attracted to that aesthetic.

They're not mutually exclusive you know! I have an entire field with lovely trees, but I'd love some plastic rattan garden furniture in my garden, even if it is just a stop-gap until I get the onion (its actually called a peach daybed).

Yew trees are a bloody liability in fields though, and best fenced off, because they're poisonous to a number of grazing animals and cause liver damage in the long term.

My personal hate is decking. I just find it slippy.

I sometimes like to lie on the grass on my yoga mat. The birds seem to get used to me after a bit and I get some lovely pictures.

MaelyssQ · 31/01/2021 21:02

The peach day bed is 3 grand though, I think I'll stick to my rattan sofa for now.

Roll on the warmer weather when I can sit in comfort and watch the sunset with a large g&t Gin

They do come down in price once the summer approaches though:

So the OP WAS motivated by jealousy after all. She’s in a rental with a garden she hates but can’t change. Not a surprise though.

HikeForward · 31/01/2021 21:26

Where do you sit then? On the compost heap Confused

I can’t stop laughing at this for some reason 😂😂😂

And whoever commented those rickety rusty metal spindly things look like they were left by the previous owner then forgotten about, I agree. They don’t look safe let alone comfortable!

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2021 22:19

Completely. I’m testament to it, I’ve both hideous sofa and many trees..😃

Under two trees I do have teak benches, I can honestly say I prefer sitting on the sofas.

snowliving · 31/01/2021 22:34

I've put my sofas under my trees for natural shade.
Wanting a comfy bum doesn't mean I hate trees.

In my experience when someone makes disparaging comments for no good reason, about something perfectly innocuous but generally expensive or you need space for, then generally it is driven by a negative emotion like envy or unhappiness about yout own situation.

The clue was in the op with use of the words like “smug” and “show offy”.

So I assume the op knows someone with them, or she’s recently seen some, because something prompted this silly thread.

Vivenne · 31/01/2021 23:23

I feel the same about the cushions, it would irritate me bringing them in from the rain.

Janegrey333 · 31/01/2021 23:27

@Strongerthanilook

We are going all out this year. Wooden loungers, built wooden seating area, potentially a day bed and yes, a ridiculously expensive rattan sofa/dining set with a built in fire pit.

Don’t envy me OP when my family and I are barbecuing in paradise ha!

I don’t think she will envy you, somehow. Ha.

They are decorative. Would you know about such ideas? It’s like not buying your “art” in Dunelm.

Don’t be silly. She’s in “a rental”, indeed. How snobbish. Touché time.

@Janegrey333

On the subject of gardens, why do so many people cram gardens full of stuff? “Less is more.” doesn’t seem to be followed.
Maybe because they like them that way? 'Less is more' isn't some kind of diktat to be followed by all.

M’dear?! Are you an elderly retired Colonel?
