Ok so I just randomly came across this on prime video. I used to watch this show when I was at uni and had lots of free time .

It is vile and fat shaming , Gillian McKeith just went round a town centre feeling women's bottoms , staring at them , judging them telling one woman it was like dough! Looking horrified . Then got a load of women into a building and got them to take their knickers off so she could judge them! Calling them the flabby bottom parade !

What really stood out for me was she did not stop any men in the town centre and no men in the take your knickers off stage !

Did anyone watch this and AIBU to think this was all in very bad taste ?

Really, this is the best thing you can find to feel outraged about at the mo? Biscuit

lastqueenofscotland · 09/01/2021 20:14

I found it on prime earlier this year. I wasn’t outraged by it but I can see why it’s no longer a thing!

So you think just because there is a pandemic we should start ignoring misogynistic attitudes and ideas?
nininani · 09/01/2021 20:19

@2021optimist . Get a grip ! Can't talk about covid 24/7 and surprisingly we are still allowed to feel things for things other than covid !

Oohlalalalala · 09/01/2021 20:21

I used to love watching it but even at the time thought it was outrageous. On most of the episodes both sides seem to have eating disorders or at least disordered eating.

katienana · 09/01/2021 20:21

Didn't she used to get people to shit in a box then act outrage when it smelt bad?

Ponoka7 · 09/01/2021 20:21

All the women taking part wanted to improve their bum. It was all done with consent.

I used to watch it and like it. It's outdated now.

nininani · 09/01/2021 20:24

I used to love it, I would have been around 23, in my thirties now and unsure why I ever liked it

Is covid all you talk about then?
tyranny · 09/01/2021 20:26

Of course it’s awful. Terrible.
I don’t know that I’ve got the energy for ‘outraged’ after 12 years though. Besides which, outraged is usually reserved for surprising things. And the fact that this show was always destined to be vile misogyny sort of rules out the surprise element.
If it aired today, I’d probably submit a complaint. Had I seen it in 2008, same.
But sadly I’m just ‘yeah of course, what did you expect?’
Misogyny and fat shaming have been around forever and aren’t going away.

yvanka · 09/01/2021 20:26

If you think that's bad, don't ever watch Fat Families!

feelingverylazytoday · 09/01/2021 20:27

Have you ever watched Fat families OP?
Some people aren't over sensitive about their weight and are fine with this kind of approach. If you don't like it then don't watch it.

itchyfinger · 09/01/2021 20:29

I used to love that show but it has not aged well. Nearly all of the people on there who swapped diets had some kind of eating disorder. It wasnt a healthy way to teach people how to eat properly- by forcing them onto an extreme (and usually unhealthy) diet!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 09/01/2021 20:43

Gillian Mckeith, the jobbie strainer.
She uses the title Dr despite having no medical training, was compelled to stop using it

cherrypie790 · 09/01/2021 20:45

Gillian McKeith obviously had an eating disorder, just like the people she was trying to help - just the opposite end of the spectrum.

I love watching My 600lb life..... makes me feel very normal in comparison, and keeps me motivated to keep my diabetes under control.

Hellothere19999 · 09/01/2021 20:48

Omg forgot about this show, with the poo in the box 😂😂😂😂 and then she pretended to faint on in a celeb hahahaha.

alittleprivacy · 09/01/2021 20:48

@katienana

Didn't she used to get people to shit in a box then act outrage when it smelt bad?
But that did give us her appearance on Jonathon Ross where she asked for his poo. He showed her a tupperware box of it and she went on an on and on about how awful it smelled and how it was a sure sign of his terrible diet. Then he lifted it out of the box and ate some because it was a melted Mars bar!
EssentialHummus · 09/01/2021 20:48

Gillian McKeith just went round a town centre feeling women's bottoms

Am I the only one grinning almost from ear to ear at this image? How mad that someone thought "Hold on, you know what would make brilliant TV?" Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 09/01/2021 20:51

What about "Honey we're killing the kids" which barely made it past BBC3 in 2004 ish Grin

DimidDavilby · 09/01/2021 20:53

She's a odd un she is. Wonder what she's doing now. Is she still on the telly?

underneaththeash · 09/01/2021 20:53

Why? There is nothing positive about being fat.

shelbyrae · 09/01/2021 20:53

@Oohlalalalala

I used to love watching it but even at the time thought it was outrageous. On most of the episodes both sides seem to have eating disorders or at least disordered eating.
that was the point wasn't it - pointing out the disordered habits of both of them by giving them the opposite diets

kind of like that show where they swap hoarders and obsessive compulsive cleaners!

morally questionable and of course set up for entertainment value but it was to show they were at two extremes of the spectrum.

Offskki · 09/01/2021 20:55

I’m not sure “outraged” is a proportionate response.

DaysAreGettingLongerNow · 09/01/2021 20:55

I think we’re not allowed to talk about her on here. Or was that someone else?

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 09/01/2021 20:56

If you want to feel less outraged there's a meme that's been doing the rounds for a while of "Doctor" Gillian and Nigella Lawson. They're apparently the same age. Grin
