Ok so I just randomly came across this on prime video. I used to watch this show when I was at uni and had lots of free time .

It is vile and fat shaming , Gillian McKeith just went round a town centre feeling women's bottoms , staring at them , judging them telling one woman it was like dough! Looking horrified . Then got a load of women into a building and got them to take their knickers off so she could judge them! Calling them the flabby bottom parade !

What really stood out for me was she did not stop any men in the town centre and no men in the take your knickers off stage !

Did anyone watch this and AIBU to think this was all in very bad taste ?

"It wasn't a programme that taught much about healthy eating."

No, but a programme with average sized people eating a plate of salmon, green beans and carrots wouldn't have been interesting would it?

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 09/01/2021 21:20

@SomewhatBored

The 'skinny' diets were often terrible. I haven't seen it for years, but I remember things like a Mars Bar for breakfast, then nothing else until the evening when they'd have a couple of slices of toast.

There was one where Mr Superskinny drank about 8 cans of lager a day and consumed very little else - they replicated this by giving the Supersize person orange juice instead.

Then, the skinny person would be confronted at breakfast with a fry-up, eight croissants and a bowl of coco-pops. They'd eat one sausage and be full for the rest of the day.

It wasn't a programme that taught much about healthy eating.

I think they were then sent away with a diet plan. Which was fine for the people on the show. Not so helpful for someone watching. Maybe they should have done a few days on each others diet, then a few days together on a healthy diet.

(As someone with disordered eating I know what I shouldn't eat. But its not so easy to know what I should. Theres a million diets and eating plans, all of which contradict each other.)

oh yeah trinny and suzanne were a pair of twats and who was that robot woman who used to give people fucking surgery and stuff to make them look younger?

stufftosay · 09/01/2021 21:22

OMG when she used to make people poo in a box and then she was horrified that it was smelly. That was TV gold. The way the person who had done the poo would sit on the edge of the bath with her and bow their head in shame. Why would you ever put yourself in that position. They'd also show the poo and Gillian made such a big deal out of how bad it smelled. Was that really necessary. Not really cool at all if you ask me. I used to watch it all the time. The poo bit was my fave.

Oh yes, I remember now - didn't they 'catch up' with them a couple of months later to see how they'd done on the diet plan? Mostly they had gained or lost as was intended. Whether they kept it up once the cameras had retired, it would be interesting to know.

I agree - seeing them follow a healthy plan for a few days would have been helpful.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 09/01/2021 21:24

God will people stop doing that patronising flower thing, it just makes you seem like a twat.

It's a biscuit. As in, 'have a biscuit, dear.' An utterly brilliant response for this thread ! Biscuit It's MN for No Comment.

YourWurstNightmare · 09/01/2021 21:25

My favourite part was when they would go to America and get 600 lb people to lecture the Supersize Brit to change their habits, or end up like them!

Yes they did a catch up/reunion which was usually really lovely to see. Maybe we need a "10 years later" or however long it has been Grin

What was that ghastly thing where a woman stripped off and the image was beamed onto a building. Toe curling.

CardoMondo · 09/01/2021 21:31

Flabby bottom parade 😂 I used to like Gok Wan when he called people “massive fatties”

At this point in the pandemic I would probably watch it for the illusion of some bloody company.
Nsky · 09/01/2021 21:34

It served a time and place.
Tho eating disorders still are rife, and fat acceptance is meant to be ok?
Lots of help out there, and fat/ obese seems acceptable, when it fact most can do something about it, myself included

Grandtheft · 09/01/2021 21:36

Please don't tell me this was on 12 years ago! That's not possible, feels like yesterday 😬

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 09/01/2021 21:37

I’d actually forgotten about all these ghastly programmes esp honey we are killing the kids.

I usually think that things from 20 years ago happened yesterday but for some reason I was surprised SS v SS was as recent as 2008. If you'd asked me I'd have guessed around 2000.
Ahorsecalledseptember · 09/01/2021 21:42

I liked this. Dr Jessen had quite a nice, gentle bedside manner and I think some of the work they did - looking back at photos and pinpointing when things got out of control - were good.

Some of the participants seemed lovely but a small handful were very judgey and unpleasant to the bigger person.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 09/01/2021 21:42

Didn't Gok (did he do How to look good naked?) Refer to boobs as "chesticles" or maybe "breasticles"?
Trinny and Suzanna used to say "tits" a lot i seem to remember.
I think the reason the fashion ones seem so dated is because fashion has changed. Outfits that looked nice when T&S put them together look so dated now.
Plus the misogyny of course.

ElizaLaLa · 09/01/2021 21:44

I wouldn't be outraged. Theres nothing like it on tv now (except the reruns) so why get annoyed.

I still watch them now, and a year to save my life etc, when I want to do exercise but can't be bothered. I soon get my arse moving. I used to watch them while on an exercise bike in front of the tv 😂😂😂

Actually, I should watch a bit of Kim & Aggie tomorrow, come to think of it.

KickAssAngel · 09/01/2021 21:47

10 years younger was the one someone was asking about.
That was the good one to get on as they paid for surgery/dieticians/makeovers, the lot.

underneaththeash · 09/01/2021 21:48

Fat shaming IS not a thing.
It is not healthy to be fat. Obesity is a leading co-morbidity in almost all major health conditions.
It’s not great to be underweight either, especially as a woman.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 09/01/2021 21:48

I was watching old Fast Show sketches a while ago and it was funny seeing the 'does my bum look big in this' woman. It's weird how something like arse size can be in fashion.

Old Trinny and Susannah is also a great watch. A few years ago, someone posted images from their 2004 book online and it's mental. (Sorry for the sun link I can't find the original Twitter thread). www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/7341077/trinny-susannahs-2004-fashion-guide-mocked-online/

WaltzesWithSnobs · 09/01/2021 21:49

I went right off Dr. Jessen following his comments on paedophilia and child brides.

user127819 · 09/01/2021 21:50

I still like watching SS vs SS but I do skip the Gillian McKeith segments because I can't stand them. I couldn't get outraged about something from 2008 though. 2008 was just a different culture.

Freaksandgeeks · 09/01/2021 21:52
If you want to feel less outraged there's a meme that's been doing the rounds for a while of "Doctor" Gillian and Nigella Lawson. They're apparently the same age. Grin
Here it is: diaryofadomesticgoddess.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/mckeith-v-lawson1.jpg
No real need to pit women against each other - that’s another negative IMO.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 21:53

"No real need to pit women against each other "

That's also to do with different types of photos.
