To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

Markies? Picky bits? What are they?

FirewomanSam · 09/01/2021 14:53

But that aside have we really got to the stage where grown adults can't decide if they can to a shop/take away

Yep.

Why would you ask on here, if I wanted something from a shop I would just get it, it wouldn't enter my head to post on here

And yep. I have never understood this. Why does the opinion of random people on the internet make a difference to your decision making?

TaraRhu · 09/01/2021 14:54

I went to m and s for picky bits yesterday. I also got some stuff we needed like milk and bread. It's no big deal. Who cares what you call it or what you buy. Nice treats are all we have just now. Go for it.

PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 14:54

@LaMarschallin

My poshest (I know, just my opinion) and richest (pretty sure that's true) friend calls it Marks and Expensive.

I'm more a "Marks" or "M 'n' S" person.

Never heard of "picky bits" before MN.
DDs used to call all the bits and pieces put out for supper on Christmas Day a "smorgasbord".

You know that smorgasbord is an actual word Grin

The type where you hold the rapier by the point and hit people over the head with the handle.

Sounds good. Will it be enough to deal all the 🤮 comments and emojis being posted by those with such exorbitant sensibilities on this thread?

AliceinBunniland · 09/01/2021 14:56

YABU just for saying "Markies" and "picky bits"

FirewomanSam · 09/01/2021 14:56

All the people saying they feel physically ill at the thought of ‘picky bits’, why the fuck would you open and read a thread with that in the title then?

Aaaand I think it’s time for me to put the phone down because for some reason this thread is making me so angry. Angry

nancybotwinbloom · 09/01/2021 14:56

Do you mean Marksies? Not Markies

MrsGrindah · 09/01/2021 14:57

Well you’d better not pop into Dottie P’s on the way back!

Wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves in Scotland? Because one or two English words give us the creeps? Eh what? Grin

Having read the OP why on earth would you think it was McDonald's?
BooFuckingHoo2 · 09/01/2021 14:57

You go and get your picky bits OP, after all, life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain Grin.

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2021 14:58

Oh! Was it the inverted commas?
Not really sure why I put those in.

Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 14:58

Blimey! How did a thread about canapés descend into such madness?

TJ17 · 09/01/2021 14:58

[quote AldiAisleofCrap]@Agirlnamedsam

1325 deaths yesterday but as you are fed up then obviously your “picky bits” take priority!

Yeah we should all just starve and not go in any shops. Humans can survive days/maybe even weeks without food! People are so selfish for eating!!

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 09/01/2021 14:58

M&S or Marks and Sparks in my world down South. Go, get the wonder food. No ones going to rifle through your basket and make you put it back on the shelves. Enjoy

PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 14:58

@LaMarschallin

You'd put it in quotes, that normally suggests that it's in some way not a correct word. You accurately described a smorgasbord, I'm sure you can appreciate my confusion.
Womencanlift · 09/01/2021 14:58

Definitely not a generic Scottish term - I have never heard it been referred to as Markies. Plain old boring M&S here

And we would call it nibbly bits rather than picky bits.
