To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

YABU to call M&S “Markies” and to use the phrase “picky bits”

goldielockdown2 · 10/01/2021 17:11

I'm always in Marks'. I'm not going to starve or go without just cos some people can't cope with the idea 😂

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 17:15

@WeAreHalfWayThere. You’ve not rtft? Well, the time to slag off the wording has passed; it’s been agreed that these are perfectly fine phrases to use in many (not all) parts of Scotland. We are now in the part of the thread where I call out any more cheek. So don’t be a wee wideo

We call it Marksies round here. Work away OP. They have one way system in our local food hall and even during Christmas rush it didn't feel overcrowded.

She’s really not. 💁🏻‍♀️
Goingdooolally · 10/01/2021 17:29

What did you get @Agirlnamedsam?

Dogman · 10/01/2021 17:30

We call it “bitsa” short for bits of this and bits of that. Some people may think that makes us uneducated, uncouth, twee or general arseholes. I think their judgemental attitude says more about them. I’d love to head to Marksies but enough food in I don’t feel I can justify it. Planning a trip at the end of the month when I have cleared some freezer space to make it worth the run!

Blackberrybunnet · 10/01/2021 17:37

I live in NE Scotland. It's called Markies here. I've lived in other aprts of Scotland, and in England. Never called it Markies anywhere else. That aside, YOU SHOULD BE STAYING AT HOME. Picky bits are not essential shopping.

Glamflimfloogety · 10/01/2021 17:45

Christ some of you are absolutely vile... Clearly lockdown is getting to you if you're getting so het up about "markies" and "picky bits". Got get yourselves some wine and chill out huns.

OP - They're picky bits in our house too. It's food so it's essential, if it keeps you fed one lunch time or evening then crack on. Alternatively, combine it with a bigger shop and tell DH to do one Wink

Viviennemary · 10/01/2021 17:46

Never heard the expressions Markies or picky bits. Sorry.

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 17:47

@Goingdooolally: well, there was loads of stuff close to sell by date, so filled the freezer with some ready meals and bread, and scones. Then got some sandwiches, sausage rolls, pasta salad, wee saboury pastry things, cream cakes and salted caramel hot cross buns for the freezer. And milk.

In fairness, because the freezer is full, and the milk gets delivered, it will be a couple of weeks before we need to get another food shop

@Glamflimfloogety. I’m thoroughly entertained by this thread. Who knew there were so many on MN who think they’re Archie.

It’s keeping my mind off the horror show that will be working full time and homeschooling a 5 year old who wants round the clock attention

Isn't it Marksies ?

flobbadobba · 10/01/2021 18:13

My mum calls it marksies, she's from rough area of the north west's

flobbadobba · 10/01/2021 18:13

I think markies are dog biscuits

WeAreHalfWayThere · 10/01/2021 18:14

It was meant to be lighthearted...

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 18:18

Sounds good and you got bargains too. You do know now you will get called lazy for buying ready made meals by the miserable brigade OPGrin says the lady who gave her child a microwave mac and cheese at the weekend .

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 18:48

@Belledan1: call me lazy if they want, it’s all about just keeping things ticking over at the moment. Did a bit of batch cooking over the holidays so at least we don’t need to spend lots of time preparing food every night

justwanttobemum · 10/01/2021 18:49

Markies and picky bits or picky tea both normal in NE Scotland :)
And yes OP go, YANBU. Markies picky bits are the best

Belledan1 · 10/01/2021 18:53

It was meant as a sarcastic joke against mn ie my smiley face just saying on here some people never have ready made meals as they are so perfect ie and I do odd occasion but cook too. Sorry if it came over wrong

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 18:56

@Belledan1. I know what you mean. I meant that they can call me lazy if they want; not you!

Belledan1 · 10/01/2021 19:04
