To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

"Picky bits" makes me feel sick... just utterly revolting....makes me think of some acne-covered youth picking spots for some reason Envy

Knew you meant M&S though.

Didn't know what Tommy K was.... feel enlightened! And I think I might love the expression and use it in a tongue in cheek kind of way from now on!

CherryPieface · 09/01/2021 22:47

Born on east coast of Scotland, now live on West coast, it will always be Markies to me!

User95659565 · 09/01/2021 22:47

@spaceghetto

Threads like these remind me of school. I would be called a name by one person and this would then be copied by another and another. Each person thought they were witty and part of some elite group, even though they'd just said the exact same thing. This behaviour is what makes me shudder.
I 100% agree
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 09/01/2021 22:49

We call it marks but not markies but knew what you meant.
And for picky bits its the best for

FredWinnie · 09/01/2021 22:49

@HuckfromScandal

Scottish here, Call it Markies Call them picky bits,

The rest of you up your own arses bitches can all fuck off to the far side of fuck. Jeezo, what a nasty sarcastic vitriolic bunch of c##nts you all are, I am actually ashamed for you.

OP - I wish you many long and happy years of picky teas from Markies.

A 1000 fucking likes

OP get your picky bits and browse round Markies whenever you like.

In a show of solidarity I'm going to start using picky bits and Markies here in good old East Anglia

LickEmbysmiling · 09/01/2021 22:50

Gosh this really is mn in a nutshell.

Pandemic crisis food run and everyone goes 20 pages on ops turn of phrase.

Op go.

I call it smorgasbord but tongue in cheek because of the word itself...

Miranda15110 · 09/01/2021 22:53

We say Markies too. We're in Scotland. As long as it's in your county and you wear a mask 😷

Oblomov20 · 09/01/2021 22:59

Blimey, his thread is harsh! I thought everyone in the 80's called it marksies, or marks, or plenty of other names?

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:00

I’m baffled why there is so much vitriol and nastiness to me about the choice of words I used: they are common terms where I live, and other regions refer to them differently. I’m not a “twee” person or a “live laugh love” kind of woman: but so fuck if I was? Would rather be that than some of the sour faced cows on here

Furries wine it is.... probably should avoid Derbyshire though 🍷🍷

MN has been absolutely vile today. I think the stress is getting to everyone. You really didn’t deserve all the nastiness on this thread. Go to M&S tomorrow and buy whatever you want. You deserve it after this unjustified pasting.
Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:04

@Smiledwiththerisingsun. I didn’t even get my picky bits! Been sat reading a book and drinking apple tea. But, it turns out we have run out of milk so will need to get some tomorrow...
Wonder which shop I will go to?

For anyone about to go nuts that I didn’t get the milk in the tesco shop: we get it delivered. But we ran out because my son is at home rather than at school and seems to be hoovering it up

@Hyvsvaar: he’s eating and drinking fine. No temperature.

He’s just fed up that we’re working and not playing with him all the time: so throwing tantrums for attention.

What the hell, people. Calling it Markies is not ridiculous, certainly not to the level so many are pretending. If was always called that where I grew up, NE Scotland. And so what if it is?

Jeez. Such snobbery and ridicule of what is obviously a colloquial term.

Sorry OP. Stay safe and place an order for delivery. Better safe than sorry.

Saz12 · 09/01/2021 23:08

I think calling it “Markies” and “picky bits” means you’re from “a wee village just outside Glasgow”. Or maybe Dunblane? Not that I have any stereotypical view of the world, of course. If you are, then no absolutely you must not go and instead must always be miserable because I was outbid in a house in one of those areas and am therefore jealous.

HollyBen · 09/01/2021 23:09

It is DH's birthday on Monday. I plan on going to Markies for some picky bits for lunch - both normal and acceptable phrases in Edinburgh.
I will also pick up a cake. I would prefer the celebration cake with stars but DS doesn't like it. DS and DD are campaigning for Colin the Caterpillar but I don't like chocolate cake. Dilemmas!
Anyway OP. Haters gonna hate! I hope you made your trip and enjoyed the picky bits

I agree, op. Some people clearly just enjoy being horrible. You don't have to justify yourself or ask permission on here for anything in your life. Don't take it personally Op, the bitter, sour faced posters have probably moved onto some other poor soul by now.
Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:11

@Saz12. I’m from Glasgow, not the wee fancy village beside it, but the most deprived part just beside it. Live in Aberdeen now. My mum will be beside herself laughing when she sees this thread. She thinks “Markies” is hysterical and I have no idea what she would think of picky bits, As she thinks even saying “nibbles” is pretentious. In fact she thinks having nibbles is pretentious and you should have a proper dinner

Agreed!

We say we are having a picky tea when it's stuff like this.

The comments on the ops wording have been really awful. Some need a serious look at themselves

Gabite · 09/01/2021 23:12

I funking hate mumsnet sometimes.

Youngatheart00 · 09/01/2021 23:15

It really is bizarre what some people get wound up about!

MN - U OK Hun? (Knowing that will wind the ‘itchy teeth-ers’ up 🤪)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 09/01/2021 23:18

Weird thread

And this For the record it's Markses around my neck of the woods, or Marks and Sparks. Snacky bits rather than picky bits same here

At one point i was doing most of the shopping at markses, it was less stressful than tescos and asda

Quite often dh will go to the tesco while i go to marks

Shinyletsbebadguys · 09/01/2021 23:18

I refuse to comment on the wording on the grounds that some pp on here have lost their damn minds. Honestly the absolute crap that some posters let come out of them to find a way to pick on someone else is ridiculous.

OP look at it this way. Some people have to for various reasons go to a shop weekly. That's what ? 4 more trips than you have planned? I very much doubt the world will end of you do it.

Try not lick anything random , don't be mean to the shop staff and DP your best not to introduce another strain by mutating something as you cross the road. Oh and look both ways because as all of MN know , if you step out of the house for thirty seconds you are likely to be run over , catch fire , or be attacked by aliens requiring an ambulance.

Seriously be sensible ,distance , wear a mask and don't hover by the avocados. You are being reasonable . Life has to go on a tiny little bit.

Saz12 · 09/01/2021 23:20

There are some insane posts on this thread. Has everyone else been hanging out at the bus stop knocking back the Buckie?

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:20

@Youngatheart00: yeah, what kind of expression is “itchy teeth”. I’ve never had itchy teeth
