To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

It was referred to as "Marks & Sparks" or "Markies" when I was little. NW Grin

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:21

And out of interest: who or what is Tommy K?

indemMUND · 09/01/2021 23:23

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 23:24

Ah, thanks @indemMUND. I had no idea

Some weird responses. Always been Markies in NE England.

Occasionally referred to as Marcus et Spartacus in my family. No regrets. Enjoy your picky bits from Markies OP. Fancy a Markies ham, cheese and pickle sandwich now.

ToastieSnowy · 09/01/2021 23:30

If your NE England OP and going to the toon Markies pick up Ronnie Gill in the way home. Wink

What's ronnie gill? Sorry welsh turned southern english here. The worst of both, no bugger likes us lot.
AlrightTreacle · 09/01/2021 23:32

I've never heard of Markies or picky bits. I'd say Markses and finger food; not that it matters, just interesting the different local terms that people have. We also say Tommy K here in the Midlands.

Annnnnnyway. Go and get something nice. It's January, lockdown, there's little all else to enjoy. As long as you wear a mask, distance from others and refrain from coughing or licking anyone you'll be fine.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 09/01/2021 23:36

This thread has just reminded me that we used to call Marks and Spencer ‘Markses’/‘Marks-es’ years ago. Now it’s just M&S.
Never heard ‘Markies’ though.

I honestly don’t know why people think it would BU to do food shopping in M&S!
It’s a supermarket. You are allowed to buy food.
Would it be U for the OP to go to the CoOP or Morrison’s?
I have to travel 40 mins each day to work and have been doing my shopping in the M&S half way as I drive home.
TWENTY MINUTES FROM HOME!!! OMG.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 09/01/2021 23:40

Definitely still called Marks and Sparks here.
(I’m guessing that’s why they named it the Sparks card).

gooseygooseywanderingfree · 09/01/2021 23:41

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer

Weird thread

And this For the record it's Markses around my neck of the woods, or Marks and Sparks. Snacky bits rather than picky bits same here

At one point i was doing most of the shopping at markses, it was less stressful than tescos and asda

Quite often dh will go to the tesco while i go to marks

Yes, Marks and Sparks! Haven't heard that for a long time Smile
Bloodypunkrockers · 09/01/2021 23:43

Everyone I know calls it Markies

It's food and it's allowed to buy food so I wouldn't think twice

I've only ever heard picky bits used on here and it's up there with yum, nom, hubby, etc.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 09/01/2021 23:44

But, it turns out we have run out of milk so will need to get some tomorrow...
Wonder which shop I will go to?

M&S of course. But only for the essential milk mind. Don’t you be sneaking any non-essential Percy Pigs into that basket ...

8obbingabout · 10/01/2021 00:04

Wow this is terrible. If your not going to be nice why bother posting anything at all.

jambeforeclottedcream · 10/01/2021 00:12

Marks & Sparks is the best name or M&S

Markies in this house is type if dog treat

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 01:05

It's food!!
Surely that classes as essential outing?!
REALLY can't be arsed to read what people have found within themselves to moan about to make it run to 21 pages since this afternoon (it is nearly 1am and no idea why I'm still on MN lol)
but at a guess it's a mix of people having an issue and saying you are unreasonable for saying "picky bits" or "Markies" (or both) and others calling you a selfish fucker as you haven't booked an online delivery for a food shop even if you're perfectly capable of going out by yourself...

Furries · 10/01/2021 01:51

@Campervan69

Furries wine it is.... probably should avoid Derbyshire though 🍷🍷
I’m a good girl, I wouldn’t travel that far! Wherever I am on a walk over the next week, I’ll raise a socially distanced glass of wine to you all.
Persephonegoddess · 10/01/2021 02:05

If people don't use the retailers that are open, and are allowed to be open by law, the people who work in them will not have jobs anymore so it is a balance.... if you use PPE and don't break the rules of an open shop then the staff should not be at more risk....
if we all stop shopping more than just the hospitality and entertainment industries will fail.
Now if those retailers should be open at all is a whole other thread

ZazieSheHer · 10/01/2021 02:07

@worried890

Unrelated but I’ve always called it Markies . Up until I was 18 or 19 I think I thought that was it’s proper name !

(from NE Scotland)

Yup, me too.

When I lived in Glasgow for a while some people called it Marx.

Yokey · 10/01/2021 07:38

Always "Marksies" where I'm from.

I think "picky bits" sounds distinctly middle class. I was glad to find other people had the same immediate and admittedly irrational irritation with the phrase as I did (not because of its perceived class).

That said, OP, no need for the vitriol you've received at all. Some nasty people trawl AIBU. Pity them and move on. At least you've learned that "picky bits" is potentially irritating given that irl people are likely too polite to say!

And YANBU. Go get yourself some treats.

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 08:03

Seems to be quite a few of the early comments deleted. Not sure why: they were rude but not that bad

OP posts:
SendHelp30 · 10/01/2021 08:06

@MysweetAudrina hahahahahaha

This made me laugh out loud

SendHelp30 · 10/01/2021 08:07

Marks or M&S here.

Can’t you just add “picky bits” onto your weekly shop?

FortunesFave · 10/01/2021 08:48

AGirlNamedSam Yes, I'm afraid one of them was mine...the first comment. I WAS quite rude though...I said "Get to fuck" which was a bit OTT.

But people do say that on here all the time! I went on to be quite lighthearted about your post. I didn't mean any offence...I actually thought it might have been a wind up because 'picky bits' is so hated on here!

midnightstar66 · 10/01/2021 08:54

Ive never actually heard the term markies but given the context it was particularly obvious what the OP was referring to. I don't know if the posters claiming to not know were hard of thinking or just being deliberately obtuse. OP make it worthwhile and get a few other essential bits too. I'm sure there will be things you've run out of before your next shop. One trip to m&s, cleaning your hands, wearing a mask and being mindful of distancing does not a granny killer make!
