Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

miserableannie · 21/12/2020 19:09

A nurse on ICU in a big city hospital. Worked the full pandemic. Watched people die, held their hands. Did everything I possibly could for them. Got covid myself and we get sweet fuck all. Getting me wound up some people saying they get hundreds of pounds bonus'! And to the OP when you said £20 is almost an insult...its £20 more than the fuck all us front line staff get

ForeverInADay · 21/12/2020 19:12

So OP, did he get a bonus?

everybodysang · 21/12/2020 19:15

Mine is linked to seniority. Last year it was about £400. I didn't think we'd get one this year as it's been a very tough year for the sector I work in. But have been told they're going to add something to our salary so that is very nice. I'm sure it won't be much but am so grateful to still have my job (which I love) that anything on top feels amazing. They also gave us all £20 to get a takeaway last week which was quite nice too.

I have worked for companies in the same sector where I got absolutely nothing.

I hope it's a nice once for you, OP.

Backbee · 21/12/2020 19:16

@miserableannie it's not a surprise that a lot of public sector jobs don't give bonuses. Most companies that do are either in the business of making money, or use it as an incentive rather than offer a decent pension or sickness package etc. Did you really not know some people receive annual bonuses? Confused

maverickallthetime · 21/12/2020 19:16

I once got a mini bottle of wine. Living the dream 🙄

TinkersRucksack · 21/12/2020 20:17

ScrumptiousBears · 21/12/2020 20:32

Elouera · 21/12/2020 20:36

OP- what was the outcome? DId he get anything or not?

Onedropbeat · 21/12/2020 21:55

Still waiting to find out what DH gets this year
He knows it’s something but not how much

I usually get a few k but was told nothing this year

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/12/2020 05:51

I got a £30 voucher. Better than nothing considering I was on furlough for 4 months.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 22/12/2020 06:12

We give Xmas bonuses dependent on the year we've had financially. Last year they got £1000 each. This year £500. They are pleased to get anything this year. I would be upset if someone asked me if they were getting one. It's discretionary. We give it to the staff with November salary so they have it to spend at Xmas.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/12/2020 06:26

Dh often used to get thousands. Now it is £25 love to shop Grin... or should that be 😬

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 22/12/2020 06:54

I got 5000 euro once, when I worked in finance during the boom times. This year I got $1000 AUD, a Xmas hamper, and a free sausage sizzle. Very happy with that!

PurplePansy05 · 22/12/2020 07:01

We never get it as such although they give us few extra paid days off over Christmas which is nice. This year we had £50 in vouchers.

It varies between companies though. My mum when she was still working used to get an extra monthly salary for Christmas. My dad was paying 5% extra to his staff and give out Christmas hampers.

Thehop · 22/12/2020 07:05

My boss sends a “thank you “ message 😂

Mrsfussypants1 · 22/12/2020 07:15

£50 gift card, first Christmas bonus in 30 years of working. A pleasant surprise blown on bailey's and pistachios! I think it's the money normally spent on our Christmas party and I do not expect anything next year. Son in law started a new job a few months ago after losing his last job due to the current climate and was given a £100 bonus which hes over the moon about as it's been a tough year financially and they have been able to fully stock their freezer. He's never had a Christmas bonus before either. The company has done well this last year and is in high demand and apparently gives a Christmas bonus every year.

BiddyPop · 22/12/2020 07:21

Nothing here either

Bumsnet2021 · 22/12/2020 07:26

In my career its varied from nothing, to £7,500 plus an all expenses paid holiday for two to New York.

There is absolutely no way someone else can even begin to guess what someone might or might not get.

Paperplain · 22/12/2020 07:29

I work in a global top tier law firm and am pretty senior. This year I got the equivalent or around a fifty quid gift card (I'm not in the UK). Usually we have a gift instead hit this year they gave gift cards. It's a nice touch but given the money I make for them I feel a bit shortchanged I guess. But then I get a decent bonus mid-year instead which is better as I don't then blow it all on Christmas.

QuantumJump · 22/12/2020 07:36

Where I work, all employees (thousands of us) usually get a £100 voucher. This year it was £50 (we have been affected by covid), but I also got an extra £250 with a letter addressed to me personally thanking me for my hard work! I didn't like to mention it so not sure how many of my colleagues also got this. So pleased Smile

NatMoz · 22/12/2020 07:41

I've never had a Christmas bonus.

My husband got a £50 Amazon voucher

miserableannie · 22/12/2020 18:10

Backbee of course I know people got annual bonus' just gets my hackles up

squiddybear · 23/12/2020 19:27

I got a thank you email (not a personal one)...
