Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

Im just grateful for my job, although a nice xmas bonus would be nice as the company made 2.5 million pounds profit on black friday alone

ChristmasUserName2020 · 15/12/2020 11:36

My husband got £15k last year.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 15/12/2020 11:36

He works in finance.

Simplyunacceptable · 15/12/2020 11:40

Where DH works you get £100 the first year then it rises £50 every year so the guy he works with who has worked there for 22 years would have got 1.1k this year. They’re not giving bonuses out though for the first time ever because of covid despite the fact they stayed open throughout and have made a profit. They will still be giving them all a selection of cheese and wine though so there’s that Hmm.

I’m a teacher so get fuck all.

A bottle of fizz and a box of chocolates ...

Aprilx · 15/12/2020 13:24

Three decades in private sector, never had a Christmas bonus.

Biker47 · 15/12/2020 13:47

I usually get a percentage of my annual salary, determined from things like KPI's, profit, on time delivery etc., this year is about £1000.

Peachypips78 · 15/12/2020 14:35

Nowt (NHS).

Probably won't even get a thank you

VapeVamp12 · 15/12/2020 14:38

We all get £500 john lewis voucher every year. This year we got £300 voucher, when I wasn't expecting anything so that was really nice.

Charlottejade89 · 15/12/2020 16:05

my dp works as a delivery driver for a well known company (think big green van) and they are being given a bonus on Xmas eve, of £10 for each day they worked during a certain time period (up to £200) ots kot a christmas bonus but as a thank you for working through out the pandemic. Down side is they used to get paid £5 for each online compliment or feedback they receive which they have now stopped completely, meaning my dp is losing £50-100 a week. Also if they have any complaints at all they (even if its nothing to do with him) they lose the bonus money for that week.
I'm NHS so bugger all, they dont even get my pay right half the time

CatbearAmo · 15/12/2020 19:14

Really industry-dependent.
I get about 5k and a hamper and usually a mandatory end of year paid company "holiday" that we all take together (not this year obviously), but that's just the scraps if you compare to upper management and what they get for a bonus.
I was furloughed for a big chunk of the year and didn't think I would get the full payment so I'm obviously very grateful.

DieSchottin93 · 15/12/2020 19:17

£15 Amazon gift card.

MorganKitten · 15/12/2020 19:20

First company I worked for you had to be there a year to get the bonus.
I now work in childcare and a bonus would be laughable.

Eaumyword · 15/12/2020 19:24

A Terry's chocolate orange.
I work in a school...
I did however today have a priceless conversation at school with my favourite 5yr old, who told me he hoped to get round to writing some cards, but it was just so exhausting, but if he did I was on his quite short card list. He is just adorable!♥️

XiCi · 15/12/2020 19:39

I take it your DH is not very good at holding any sort of conversation. Is he incredibly shy? I'm finding it hard to believe that when workmates said ooh we get a Christmas bonus, he just didn't say 'oh really, how much?' like 99% of people would. And tbh if I were in your shoes, waiting to see if I can do a Xmas food shop id be really pissed off at him that he couldnt just casually ask someone at work so you can set your expectations. Its not difficult. It could be anything from a £10 M&S voucher to several thousand pounds

Cam2020 · 15/12/2020 19:42

Nothing for me and I've never ahd one. I get an annual bonus at year end and that has, varied massively from industry to industry and depending on how the business is doing year to year.

missanony · 15/12/2020 19:44

5% of salary

Idontbelieveit12 · 15/12/2020 19:45

My hubby usually gets £50 M&S voucher

missanony · 15/12/2020 19:46

@XiCi we don’t discuss our salary or bonus payments at my work. I’d think it’s rude to ask personally

PickleSarnie · 15/12/2020 19:46

Last year it was 3% of salary which was just under 2.5k before tax. This year I think I'm going to be grateful to still have a job.

XiCi · 15/12/2020 19:48

It was brought up in conversation to a new starter by a colleague though missanony so it clearly is discussed in that workplace

catsjammies · 15/12/2020 19:49

DH shockingly has had £4K bonus this year. I couldn't believe it when he said, he really wasn't expecting anything like that.

gwenneh · 15/12/2020 19:51

I work for a small firm and get 5% of salary (around £5k this year), plus profit sharing which gets paid right into my pension (so it's not touchable, but it's a part of the yearly bonus scheme.)

DH works for a much larger company and gets a £50 voucher, the cheap bastards. So there's quite a variance.

Pippa12 · 15/12/2020 19:58

I’ll tell you a funny tale- I work for the nhs. Our Xmas bonus was a cooked breakfast on Xmas day if we worked, totally happy with this. Last Xmas I worked it had been reduced to two items... I got one piece of bread and one sausage and I’d taken no food as (silly me!) was expecting a fry up Grin I hope your Xmas bonus is more lucrative, I’ll never forget that Xmas bonus for sure!

Eaumyword · 15/12/2020 20:03

Oh Pippa. I thought my Terry's chocolate orange was a bit crap (although tasty) Grin
Reducing your Christmas fry up to 2 items is so calculating and worse than getting nothing. I hope this year you all get a full breakfast if you work and thank you for doing it.
