Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

@Legalhelp

I’m definitely accounting for zero and holding back on any extra spending in case
I've had a bonus in a previous year due to winning significant contracts. It was something like £6-700, but once tax was taken into account it was a lot lower. So I'd be prepared that if it goes via usual payroll tax etc will be paid on it.

Also, it may mean if on benefits that you lose more than you gain as bonuses have to be declared.

Greydove28 · 13/12/2020 13:25

We get £1500 bonus in the summer (have to be there a year) and last xmas we got £75 supermarket vouchers and wine and chocolate

DonnaScozzese · 13/12/2020 13:25

Neither DH nor I get any bonus at Christmas or any other time. My husband has lost 15% salary because industry (airline) so affected. Both of us have worked all through since March, at work. Bit rubbish but at least we still have a job

Lemonsyellow · 13/12/2020 13:29

I’m really surprised at all these bonuses and vouchers and Christmas presents. I work for a multinational and there’s never anything like this. I’ve worked throughout too.

1sttimemumtobe2021 · 13/12/2020 13:45

£50 voucher is the most I've ever got. I can imagine people considering that a bonus. We never got anything since I started this firm and this year we are getting a voucher (which I know is up to £50) as a special treat for a hard year.

Therefore it seems to me that employers consider £50 to be a bonus so I wouldn't expect loads (but hopefully I am wrong!!)

Strangedayindeed · 13/12/2020 17:14

Bonus means extra, £20 is extra not insulting. You seem a bit grabby. Just plan as if it’s you’ll get nothing and anything extra is great.

I dunno, I'd rather have had nothing than the shitty bag of sweets.

We'd all have understood nothing for Christmas given Covid, but everyone I've spoken to hates the shitty bag of sweets.

Legalhelp · 13/12/2020 21:37

@Strangedayindeed I seem a bit grabby? Really?

DH and I have never had a bonus. Sometimes my boss puts biscuits in the staffroom-does that count?!

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 13/12/2020 21:44

I got a £50 supermarket voucher. DP gives his apprentice age staff £500 and non-apprentice employees £1000 as a Christmas bonus. He and the other directors get £5K

transformandriseup · 13/12/2020 21:52

Usually just a small box of chocolates

Heatherjayne1972 · 13/12/2020 21:55

Free (tiny) sample of toothpaste usually -I’m so lucky

PenelopePiper · 13/12/2020 22:16

Don't worry OP. You don't seem grabby at all! You're just hoping to have a little extra after a tough year, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

It's just a standard phrase used by unimaginative people when they're jealous.

I think expect for nothing and then if he gets something, whatever it is will be a nice surprise. Don't even hope for anything as you might be disappointed.

Best of luck!

megletthesecond · 13/12/2020 22:20

I've worked in local government, charity sector, private and retail and never had an Xmas bonus in almost 30yrs.

digthroughtheditches · 13/12/2020 22:25

Nothing here.

Strangedayindeed · 13/12/2020 22:26

@PenelopePiper jealous 😂 that did really make me laugh, so thank you.

ToDoListAddict · 13/12/2020 22:29

Has he passed the probation period? As probably not eligible for any bonus scheme until he has. If he is eligible it will be pro-rated.
But the amount is impossible to estimate.
My company is doing zero bonus this year Sad

hibbledibble · 13/12/2020 22:30

None, but I do get claps

Legalhelp · 13/12/2020 22:32

@PenelopePiper Thank you! 💐 yes that’s exactly it, I hate to be sort of relying on something extra, but it would really make a difference this year!

NHS worker here, obviously I get nothing! DH used to get about £4k woriing in private healthcare but now works in hospitality so will get nothing this year as they will be lucky to even be in business in the new year let alone dish out bonuses.

It will vary from company to company, DHs was in his contract partly dependent on performance partly on profits.

PugInTheHouse · 13/12/2020 22:39

I forgot that DH is also working for a supermarket this year due to furlough etc and they are getting 10% bonus of all hours they work over dec/jan plus double discount on their shopping in a specific week near Xmas.

Zoflorabore · 13/12/2020 22:53

My dp used to get a Xmas night out paid for, a takeaway paid for on the last day before shut down ( manufacturing) and £50 cash. He was made redundant last month and has a new job where nobody gets a bonus.

My auntie is pretty high up in a well known company and gets on average 15-20k per year in bonus. She always treats herself to a Mulberry bag or designer shoes.

We were always grateful for the £50 cash!

Jimbellselmbath · 13/12/2020 23:03

I'm getting £300 which I assume will be taxed

DH gets a joint of meat which is always beef as that's the only kosher cut offered

Legalhelp · 13/12/2020 23:05

@Zoflorabore 15-20k my god, that’s incredible, what are these kind of jobs

Neither of us get anything. But both grateful to have work.
