Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

Nothing where I work. Bosses usually bring in a selection of biscuits/cakes/chocolates for the office to share.

DH used to get a bonus most years. One year he got £500 but that was unusual. Usually £200-£300

My husband gets a gift hamper worth about £100 - I’ve never received one!

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:26

It would really help my stressy mind to know now..! I’m not getting my hopes up, trying to think if I was a boss of a company..£20 or so as a ‘Bonus’ feels almost insulting?
A big issue is the staff don’t get paid over the two weeks the company closes, dp can’t even work as the place is closed, to lose half a months wage is difficult at this moment!
This is why I’m really hoping it’s an ok amount 🙏

My employer gives £120 for full timers or pro rata if part time.

I'm a teacher. We've been told that next week's staff meeting is being replaced by tea and cakes in year groups. That's the closest I'll get to a Christmas bonus.

Elouera · 12/12/2020 21:30

Couldn't he ask colleagues what has been the 'norm' in the past? no guarantee it would be the same this year though.

In 20+yrs, I've only worked for 1 company that gave a bonus. Not specifically for Christmas, but when they did pay reviews. That ranged from 1-3% of total salary. 1 friend gets a Christmas bonus- which amounts to biscuits and a packet of 'nice' hot chocolate in a hamper!

Note though, that if he has only been there 6mths, he might only get half of what others would get.

Nameisthegame · 12/12/2020 21:32

Best to plan for none, you won’t remember a less lavish Christmas dinner in the long run but you will probably remember having to struggle due to over indulgence, me and my ex had a similar thing and then it turned out he didn’t get a bonus at all because he hadn’t been there long enough...apparently

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:35

@Elouera I asked him to maybe do that, he won’t 🙄 pretty desperate to keep in good form and stay with this company due to the recent situation, so is keeping quiet.

Christmas bonus?!? What's one of them lol

MrsBeltane · 12/12/2020 21:36

NHS so nothing.

I have worked in private companies and received an extra month's salary in one place. In another it was a voucher for a turkey and a Christmas pudding!

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:36

@cariadlet Teacher too, we never had any, the bonuses came from lovely parents and their gifts, they were so appreciated.

200 this year, was not expected

caffeinebuzz · 12/12/2020 21:38

Every company is different. And this year is different for every company. I would plan the Christmas you can afford without the bonus, then add a couple of last minute extras if it's good. Otherwise enjoy a treat in January!

Batmanandbobbin · 12/12/2020 21:38

I usually get a £10 love to shop voucher (even when I was on maternity leave) this year we got a £40 Amazon voucher to say thanks for working throughout. In the care home I was at, used to be part of management team, head office gave me permission to spend £5 on each member of staff to get them a bottle of wine 🙄. So so kind when they were making big books.

Iamaweirdone · 12/12/2020 21:39

My company isn’t giving us anything this year (huge national company), they usually give us £20. They’re still giving some customers Christmas gifts though cos they’re clearly more important than those of us that have slogged our guts out whilst half the staff are on furlough to save on wage costs (whilst the company still takes the same amount of money each and every day, they’re definitely not on furlough due to lack of work to do).

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:40

@Nameisthegame I’m really hoping so as the boss has been really complimentary to him and pleased with him, he’s worked his arse off and made a difference to the company already. It’s a small company and the boss seems a decent, genuine person, I’d be surprised if he left him out of it due to time there, but I’m setting my expectations low and waiting first before doing the food shop. It’s not a huge deal but would make for a far less stressful, penny pinching couple of weeks

We get two bottles of wine, or a £20 Majestic voucher if you are home/field based

Belledan1 · 12/12/2020 21:42

It might get apportioned even if he did as only there 6 months or might have to work there so long.

SueblueNZ · 12/12/2020 21:42

Whatever your partner's workplace usually gives as a bonus, there are two important things to bear in mind. He has been there only six months so might get zero or half, and given Covid the business might not be in a position to give bonuses.
We generally receive a business-wide productivity bonus of $1000 (taxed). This is across the board, unrelated to individual performance. We have been told that this is inappropriate in 2020 when many people have lost their jobs. It's impossible to argue with that.
We will still get $20 per head towards our end of year lunch at a local pub. No go, no get.

timeforanewstart · 12/12/2020 21:42

Is he not getting any pay whilst closed not even the bank holidays or is he self employed

nixso29 · 12/12/2020 21:43

I get £500 cash bonus ever December, same every June. Accounts role. I realise after reading through the previous replies that I am very fortunate to recieve this.

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:44

@MrsBeltane An extra months wage would be incredible!

I have never worked anywhere that gives an xmas bonus but dh got £250 last year and is getting £250 this year taxed as thats the law so not sure how much actually ends ip in wages but he has a job and at this time we are grateful, previous jobs he has got a bottle wine

SueblueNZ · 12/12/2020 21:47

And, unless he is a casual or a contractor, why is he not paid during Xmas shut down?
Or is it because he has yet to accumulate enough annual leave?
