Average Christmas bonus?

Legalhelp · 12/12/2020 21:13

My dp started a new job 6 months ago and colleagues have said they generally get a bonus at Christmas.
Times have been very hard recently, but we’ve managed to set money back to get all DD’s Christmas presents, decorations etc.
The Christmas bonus received will be the difference between a tight Christmas meal etc with a few nice bits or a relaxed couple of weeks for us at home.
Is there an average Christmas bonus for staff generally, percentage wise? Is it generally £50 in an envelope or a few hundred or is it completely different according to each company?
Dp doesn’t want to enquire about it and go just wait and see.

Massively variable. I've seen £50 given, I've seen £1000 (the latter I would say is unusually large for the sort of little Christmas handout given to all staff).

DH's firm pay the standard annual bonuses around christmas time anyway

DrCoconut · 15/12/2020 20:07

I got a Christmas card in the post Grin

GoHornets · 15/12/2020 20:11

DH and I get performance bonuses but not Xmas. Dh gets a hamper from work. If you could give us an idea of industry we’d probably be able to help more, but I hope it turns out well for you.

Just wanted to ask (I hope this isn’t rude) you said you were a teacher but didn’t get a bonus. At my DC schools, the teachers usually get a class Xmas gift of 200-250 in Amazon vouchers depending on the collection that year, which I guess most would consider in lieu of a bonus, but you mentioned that you’d like to know to plan good shop/ budget. Would it be better not to give Amazon vouchers / give them before the end of term?

buckingmad · 15/12/2020 20:15

Completely depends on the company. I get a 4 figure bonus at current job but have worked for another firm (same job) and got nothing.

squiddybear · 15/12/2020 20:52

I get a Christmas quiz!

TemptedToSleepInTheShed · 15/12/2020 20:53

At my last job all managers and above got £3000 each Christmas which used to be wonderful!
At my current place we usually get £500, but I don’t think any of us are expecting that to be the case this year.

glitterwobbles · 15/12/2020 21:13

Amazing bonus this year. Get to work christmas eve, boxing day during the day and New years eve night. All dressed up in fancy dress ( PPE)
If I'm lucky I might get a new years bonus of covid.

Legalhelp · 15/12/2020 21:13

I’m expecting him to come home on Friday with nothing extra for some reason. Even though he mentioned it a couple of times, he’s not gone into it since so I reckon he knows there maybe isn’t going to be one and doesn’t want to say. Perhaps he did find out you had to be there a year 🤷🏻‍♀️But nothing has been mentioned since so I’m not expecting anything!

we get average £500 plus... twice a year bonus. one in summer one in winter... I'm expecting nearer £700 this pay on the 28th ... 🌺

TheWichitaWineOne · 15/12/2020 22:05

I just got an email from a client giving me a $75 bonus.

I thought I'd immediately update this thread in my festive excitement Xmas Grin

FrenchyQ · 19/12/2020 12:03

We were surprised this week to be told that we would actually be getting a bonus. An extra £700 was a very nice surprise in a difficult year

Myshinynewname · 19/12/2020 13:27

@Legalhelp did he get a bonus in the end?

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/12/2020 14:48

Update.. got my Christmas 'bonus' yesterday..
a biro with the company's logo, and a bag the colour of a newborn baby's poo...

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/12/2020 14:49

Bear in mind they cancelled our Christmas party and told us we won't receive our 2% pay rise

Pinotwoman82 · 21/12/2020 17:34

So did he get the bonus?

DfEisashambles · 21/12/2020 17:36

I got an unexpected hefty bonus, still in two minds whether to tell DH about it or keep it quiet.

LadyJaye · 21/12/2020 17:38

My industry is performance-related, equating to 10% salary before tax.

It should be in your T&Cs?

QueenofLouisiana · 21/12/2020 17:38

I got 10 days in isolation as a child in my class tested positive on Friday.
Still waiting for my pay rise which we were awarded in September.

Nonamesavail · 21/12/2020 17:39

None

Hubby got an empty Xmas card

Alwaysandforeverhere · 21/12/2020 17:41

This year around £700 plus a pay rise. Last year was £500 plus a pay rise. Business is booming.

Nonamesavail · 21/12/2020 17:45

I did get a £5 an hour payrise though!

AnOnly · 21/12/2020 18:56

So, did he get his bonus? If so, what did he get?
SeasonFinale · 21/12/2020 18:58

Zero Christmas bonus but we all got a bottle of champagne

KenAdams · 21/12/2020 19:01

Nothing, pay freeze and redundancies announced

Meatbadger · 21/12/2020 19:03

Nothing here. Unless I take up the offer to work over Christmas for £1000.
