Thats v interesting re Holland - in French it is definitely v v common to say Hollande rather than Pays-Bas(Netherlands). I'll be careful from now on.
From my recollection a horse is a horse if 147cms and above in height and a pony if under that.

@Henio

I've been spelling whisky wrong my entire life up until a few days ago
I think the general rule of thumb is that if the country where it's produced has an 'e' in it, it's whiskey; else it's whisky.

That Pontefract isn't in Wales. But it is, Pont y Ffracd. Look it up.
Pont y Ffracd may be in Wales, but Pontefract is in Yorkshire. Xmas Confused

My 6yo can dismantle a chest of drawers with an electric screwdriver and not with my blessing

In the song "This little piggie...", the piggie that went to market was not going shopping.

Given the fact that car driving is being seen as increasingly irresponsible environmentally, I find it odd that anyone would make their child so car-centric. Driving is not the be-all and end-all to a lot of people's lives.

i didn't realise that at a boxing/wrestling match, at the beginning of each round when they say, seconds out ! round 2, the seconds are people who support assist the contenders. like in duelling. i'd assumed it was an antiquated way of saying, time's up.
I came on to scoff and possibly comment that not reading enough in youth was to blame for a lack of common knowledge.

But yep, didn’t know this.😳

@1Morewineplease

I always believed that geese flew away in the autumn to seek warmer climates. Turns out they arrive in autumn to escape colder climates.
Well obviously they do both! They migrate from where I used to live to where I now live.
sage46 · 05/12/2020 20:32

Up until recently an acquaintance believed that the sun and moon were the same thing . (I don't know what she thought about seeing them both at the same time)

Of course he was, he went to the market with a little wicker basket to buy his groceries... as well you know!

Always thought the lyrics to Nirvana Smells like Teen Spirit were "with the lights out, sex is dangerous" Until I laughed to DH once about how ridiculous that is and honestly, he has never let me live it down. He still brings it up occasionally.

Tear ducts drain tears away from eyes, they don’t produce tears.the clue is in the name but I didn’t realise this until a couple of years ago.

@Feminist10101

Really? Your 10 year old can change a tyre?

With someone finishing the tightening, yes.

I changed the oil in my dad’s car aged 6.

These are excellent life skills to have and the sooner the better.

(I refurbished a house - including plastering and replacing electrics at 18. I’ve fitted and tiled all 4 bathrooms in this house including the slate floors, fitted the wooden flooring throughout the downstairs myself. I learned from my dad and DD is learning from me. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills. See also cooking, cleaning....)

Wow, go you. Hmm
YellowEllis · 05/12/2020 20:50

It always blows my mind that when you have a kidney transplant they leave your original kidneys where they are and put the new one in your pelvis. I thought my husband was having me on but it's true.

midnightstar66 · 05/12/2020 20:53

*I didn't know that a pony is just a small horse until a year ago or so.

I thought ponies were different animals, a bit like a donkey is different, but similar to the horse.*

That's not true, horses are equines. Ponies are 4 legged spawns of the devil!

On the only horse thing, a mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse.

Come on, you expect us to believe that you don't understand why everyone's not training their children in all trades?

Do you know many real people?
