I found out last year that green, yellow, orange and red peppers are the same peper in different stages of ripeness

i didn't realise that at a boxing/wrestling match, at the beginning of each round when they say, seconds out ! round 2, the seconds are people who support assist the contenders.
like in duelling.
i'd assumed it was an antiquated way of saying, time's up.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/12/2020 19:32

It’s not Knights Shock

FudgeBrownie2019 · 05/12/2020 19:34

I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills.

Time, money, energy, access to a car, not being taught those skills themselves, all of the above? Not everyone has the many advantages you seem to enjoy and rather than be snitty about it perhaps focus some of your unspent rage on making sure your compassion and understanding of others improves whilst your child builds a delorean and mops the bathroom floors, yes?

I can't understand why this has become some kind of competition where anyone who can't do x, y and z is vilified. To be honest if children are kind, compassionate and know how to not be dicks to others, they'll be winning at life.

Also, I didn't know until recently that odds (as in the odds of something happening) are directly correlated with fractions. I thought odds were just numbers pulled out of the air like lucky guesses.

Ah, but @Feminist10101can your 10yonalso

Cook a Sunday roast form scratch? Drive said car? Put up a shelf using a drill? Fix the toilet? Change a radiator? Rewire a plug. Plumb in a Washing machine? Repair a puncture? Swim more than 500m? Ride a bike on the road safely without supervision? Speak another language at least to get by in a country on holiday? Makes decent cup of tea? Know how to write a CV? Etc

All life skills. Surely she knows all that by now, and more??

After all,they're all life skills...

NewlyGranny · 05/12/2020 19:35

I thought Cleethorpes was a comedy fictional seaside place because of the funny stories my OH told about going there as a child. Perhaps it is - I've still not been to find out!

I never even stopped to think about that!

Hmm I give you hand gliding / hang gliding. I actually learnt on a thread similar to this that it’s not called hand gliding because they’re handing on to a bar for dear life with their hands.

@MaMisled

Found out last night that Transylvania is a real place.
I also didn't really realise it was real until I met one of my closest friends. She's from there Blush
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/12/2020 19:41

It's obviously Knights in White Satin, folks. Anything you're reading contrary to that is obviously a typo Grin

I love that song. Especially when it was used in Casino.

I thought it was knights too!! I wonder why we all think that if it's wrong?!
NuniaBeeswax · 05/12/2020 19:42

"
Can’t? My 10 year old DD can do those things. She can also identify all of the warning lights on the dash, knows most of the rules of the road and different speed limits and the basics of how the engine, clutch and brakes work.

There’s absolutely no reason anyone old enough to drive can’t do the things you’ve listed."

Can she yeh 😂

coffeeandgin26 · 05/12/2020 19:44

@Feminist10101

Really? Your 10 year old can change a tyre?

With someone finishing the tightening, yes.

I changed the oil in my dad’s car aged 6.

These are excellent life skills to have and the sooner the better.

(I refurbished a house - including plastering and replacing electrics at 18. I’ve fitted and tiled all 4 bathrooms in this house including the slate floors, fitted the wooden flooring throughout the downstairs myself. I learned from my dad and DD is learning from me. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills. See also cooking, cleaning....)

That's nice for your daughter.

Can she be a nice, non judgemental person who understands that not everyone is the same? Because clearly you weren't taught that skill by your parents...

Imicola · 05/12/2020 19:46

It blew my mind when I saw a field of pineapples growing, I assumed they grew on trees. Also, peanut plants. Weird.

Pickypolly · 05/12/2020 19:47

Newlygranny I recall my friend & I howling with laughter at a train station saying Cleethorps repeatedly in posh accents after seeing it on a destination board! No idea why we found it so funny but tears rolling down my face with laughter.

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 05/12/2020 19:50

That the phrase is actually... “you’ve got another THINK coming”

And not.... “you’ve got another thing coming”

Which I think I’ve been saying incorrectly my entire 30 years.

That Pontefract isn't in Wales.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

My one is, I genuinely always thought the song was Knights in white satin. It never occurred to me that satin would be really crap armour. Nights makes so much more sense. 🙄
Oh. My. God.

I am in my 50s and I always thought it was knights until this moment.
