My film knowledge isn't great so I was well into adulthood before I realised Harrison Ford was one man and not a famous duo called Harris and Ford (presumed it was just like Ant and Dec or Simon and Garfunkel.) Blush

YellowEllis · 05/12/2020 20:58

Oh and I only found out this year that a pickle is a cucumber, and not a vegetable in its own right Blush

Msloverlover · 05/12/2020 20:59

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

My one is, I genuinely always thought the song was Knights in white satin. It never occurred to me that satin would be really crap armour. Nights makes so much more sense. 🙄
Ooooooohhhhhhhhhhh
OhioOhioOhio · 05/12/2020 21:00

That football and soccer are the same game.

grey12 · 05/12/2020 21:03

I had the idea that Winston Churchill was american BlushGrin

(Disclaimers: not born in the uk and hate history!!!)

I don't know, I just thought he had more flair than the english people I knew, with the cigar and all. Maybe kind of Capone style

Needhelp101 · 05/12/2020 21:03

My 2 year old son once fitted a buggy board securely onto his younger brother's buggy when I'd tried and failed Blush

Then again, I believed Vienna was a country until I was quite very old.

At least there's one competent member of the family 😁

Msloverlover · 05/12/2020 21:05

@Scautish

On the only horse thing, a mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse.
And further to this, mules are sterile.
anothernamereally · 05/12/2020 21:06

Those of you thinking 'knights' what did you think they were never reaching the end of?

Surely it IS 'you've got another thing coming' not 'think' ????

I can't think of any right now... there will be hundreds but I'm blissfully ignorant of them

cariadlet · 05/12/2020 21:06

@alexdgr8 I usually feel quite smug on these threads (didn't realise the Nights/knights in White Satin until well into adulthood but I seem to have that in common with 95% of the population so I don't think it counts) but I didn't realise what the "seconds out" announcement in boxing means until I read your post.

Eckhart · 05/12/2020 21:06
@00100001 that's not quite true, there are quite a few other differences, longevity, bone structure and musculature, diet...

www.saddlebox.net/the-difference-between-a-pony-and-a-horse/
So, the difference isn't size, it's that their bones are ticker (because they're not as long) their muscles are chunkier (because they're not as long) and they don't need as many calories (because they're not as big)? Those are all size!

Horses are over 4 hands 2 inches high at the withers. Ponies are less. It's the only difference. Longevity is affected by size in many animals - it doesn't mean they're different breeds. Little dogs live longer than big dogs, but they're still all dogs.

shitinmyhandsandclap

Struggling with the nights in white satin and so many thinking it's knights...that just doesn't make any sense

                       Knights in white satin
                       Never reaching the end...

I always thought it referred to the Quest for the Holy Grail - which never ended...

OwlBeThere · 05/12/2020 21:07

Well I was ‘today years old’ as the kids put it when I learned that snakes don’t feed their babies. Like I knew that mammary glands were a mammal thing, but I’d just never really considered that meant other species don’t feed their offspring!

Justgivemewine · 05/12/2020 21:08

@Feminist10101

I can't do any of those car things a PP posted either.

How so? Can’t implies you’ve tried. They’re less complicated than making a cup of tea!

I thought I couldn’t change a car wheel until I actually had to last week. Turns out I can and it actually a piece of cake ( as long as the nuts are ridiculously tight 🙄)
Hurryupbaby11 · 05/12/2020 21:08

Still not sure about this one - last Christmas DH told me that in the song 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' - Santa Claus is actually the dad dressed up as Santa. Is this right??!

OwlBeThere · 05/12/2020 21:08

Oh and I literally found out about an hour ago that the lyric to country roads that I thought said ‘shining on the river’ is in fact ‘Shenandoah River’...🤷🏼‍♀️

SendHelp30 · 05/12/2020 21:09

This is the thread for me. I didn’t know most of these but the one that has shocked me is poor little piggy not going shopping to the market!!
I also had no idea about “you’ve got another think coming” surely that can’t be right??

LucyLocketsBlackCat · 05/12/2020 21:09

I thought the knights wore the white satin over their armour

Eckhart · 05/12/2020 21:09

@YellowEllis

It always blows my mind that when you have a kidney transplant they leave your original kidneys where they are and put the new one in your pelvis. I thought my husband was having me on but it's true.
Oh WHAT???!!
Eckhart · 05/12/2020 21:11

Whales do. And they have belly buttons Smile

I refurbished a house - including plastering and replacing electrics at 18. I’ve fitted and tiled all 4 bathrooms in this house including the slate floors, fitted the wooden flooring throughout the downstairs myself. I learned from my dad and DD is learning from me. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills.

Good for you. I earn enough to pay someone with the relevant experience and skills so my house looks good rather than a diy bodge job because I know I’m not a natural at diy. Doing most things well takes practice. I’m always nervous I’ll drill through a pipe like my dad did one Sunday. He taught me the art of recognising my limitations.

I always assumed Richard E Grant and Hugh Grant were brothers. Turns out they’re not and I was the only person who thought this.

@anothernamereally

Surely it IS 'you've got another thing coming' not 'think' ????

If you think that... you've genuinely got another think coming Grin

FoxyTheFox · 05/12/2020 21:12

Its true.

FIL had a kidney transplant and they leave the old ones in there, they just disconnect them and plumb the new one in.

Gherkin. What's that about 🤣
Grapewrath · 05/12/2020 21:13

I thought a scampi was a fish. I genuinely thought fishes called scampi swam in our seas

Lockdowns2020 · 05/12/2020 21:14

Just learnt of the Brussels sprout/cabbage connection through this thread. I suppose it's obvious thinking about it but I never gave it much thought!
