Struggling with the nights in white satin and so many thinking it's knights...that just doesn't make any sense

plixy · 05/12/2020 20:03

@TheChippendenSpook my husband is colour blind and didn't know the Statue of Liberty was green until we went there and read a sign explaining it had been copper and turned green over time. The look of shock on his face was amazing.

It was released in the 60s. I thought they were hippy knights.
AthelstaneTheUnready · 05/12/2020 20:03

I'm in the knights camp. Maybe in the 60s or 70s it was attached to an advert, or some sort visual link that has stuck with an entire nation?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 05/12/2020 20:05

Look up cashew plants... I thought someone was having me on at first!

Here you go Xmas Grin

Giorgio Moroder recorded the song as "Knights in White Satin" for a 1976 album of the same name.

lotusbell · 05/12/2020 20:05

Yes, @ConstantlySeekingHappiness, as in "if you think you're going out dressed like that, you've got another think coming!"

PenCreed · 05/12/2020 20:06

@AthelstaneTheUnready

That Pontefract isn't in Wales.
Yes! I do know that, but am still always slightly surprised.

I think I was in my teens before I realised that the Wombles were from Wimbledon Common, not that they themselves were common (as in lots of them). In my defence, we don't have Commons in Scotland, I'd heard of Wimbledon because of the tennis, and the rhythm of the theme tune makes it sound like more of a pause.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 05/12/2020 20:07

Pontefract isn't in Wales? This thread is making my head hurt in a good way.

Dougt · 05/12/2020 20:09

Oh yes I thought it was Knights too! Never really thought about but did have a mental image of a procession knights on horseback, draped in white satin. Probably always will now:

I only found out today that car wheels need a special key to change the wheel/tyre...
I’m pretty sure when I was shown how to change a tyre (late 90s) these didn’t exist. Had a series of older cars and never needed to change a tyre myself. But I’ve wondered what these metal cylinder things were in my last two cars which tend to be kept in the glove box. Turns out they are quite important!

Prozacyogurt · 05/12/2020 20:09

On another note, I can’t get my head round African geography. I have to REALLY think about it and concentrate for it to make sense to me.

I just found out that Mauritania existed last week. Was 100% convinced it was a new country, or had recently changed it's name, but nope been there for centuries apparently.

Ihavetochangemyusername · 05/12/2020 20:09

@Henio

I've been spelling whisky wrong my entire life up until a few days ago
Whiskey is from Ireland, and whisky is from Scotland
Naughtylittleflea · 05/12/2020 20:10

People used to think that instead of migrating birds just buried themselves in the mud (despite never being stood on) Edward Jenner (of small pox vaccine fame) discovered they actually flew away with the seasons.

giggly · 05/12/2020 20:11

@Feminist10101
My 10 year would’nt have the strength to pull the wheel off but not to worry she could make the call to the AA if required. Xmas Grin

I thought it was knights as well

landofgiants · 05/12/2020 20:14

The Elgin Marbles are not round!

It does?! I thought Peter Sellers invented Mauritania for a film plot!

Locking wheel nuts, not all cars have them, mine doesn't.

There's ponies then there's ponies. This is my 14.1hh pony tank next to my husband (who isn't short).

Plus I've only just learnt horses can hear a human heart beat from 4' away.

knightsinwhitesatin · 05/12/2020 20:19

This seems like an apt thread for me to join Smile

TiddyTid · 05/12/2020 20:19

Oops forgot pic

Scarby9 · 05/12/2020 20:19

Weirdly, I could change a wheel when I was 10, but couldn't now. My brother and I used to take turns to do it in a layby on a B road whenever we were on holiday and stopped for a break. My dad would time us while my mum had a quiet thermos coffee.

But now I have locking wheelnuts and garages use machines to tighten things, I couldn't begin to try, even if I could remember how to do it.

Changing a wheel will now stay as one of those things I used to be able to do in my youth but can't now, like headstands, forward rolls and macrame.

Terrarer · 05/12/2020 20:19

Bob on @coffeeandgin26. I was going to post similar.... Perhaps taking pride in your child learning common decency and simply not being an arse of a person should be prioritised over it's expertise in car mechanics.

Ah yes, the locking wheel nut, nice alloys being very common on cars these days and the locking nut is to prevent them from being easily stolen. I believe it used to be thing many years ago that if you had nice alloys to find them stolen and your car resting on some bricks.

But it is, Pont y Ffracd. Look it up.
