The moments of calm are starting to wind me up, I've watched them too many times!

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 06/11/2020 20:42

@Newjobnewslob

Agree with every word RTB, a considered and intelligent summary. Laughed at your description of an anti capitalist using amazon during Lockdown, quite... (this is me!)
Exactly the same here.

Also, if we can't understand why people vote in a competely different way to us a d assume it's either ignorance or malice, then we will never get anywhere.
It's just like brexit. Insulting people for voting Tory/Trump/Brexit does nothing but further the interests of those who benefit from identity politics (not sure who that is but it isn't the people!).
I didn't always think like this though, and a large part of the reason is Mumsnet as it's opened my eyes to other people's experiences and opinions that I may never have heard outside the bubble that I live in.

Mary Trump talking to Channel 4 about how Trump will react to losing.

@boatyardblues
I've read in a couple of places that Trump might well leave the WH for Thanksgiving and not come back.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/11/2020 20:43

@RedToothBrush very good summary.
I remember your very clear, concise & insightful & where needed empathetic posts on previous threads we've both been on.

Coquohvan · 06/11/2020 20:46

@scrappydappydoo

I don’t know - I’m watching on my tv. They just play quiet piano music and scenic pictures, or pieces of art or just now some pandas playing.
Watching CNN in Scotland through Sky similiar to you @scrappydappydoo

I'm not signed up on any Republican phone or mail lists but look at this crazy text I just got:

Crazy video of the "Q Shaman" — a notorious Arizona QAnon promoter who dresses in pelts and horns — riling up a crowd about a bogus ballot fraud conspiracy theory.

Ever so slight derail whilst nothing is happening , did anyone listen to Radio 4 this morning and the lady who watched a nature reserve in America ? did anyone catch the name of the place she was watching ?

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 20:52

We are all hypocrites in our own way.

The phrase 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions' is one which i think defines the phenomenon of Trump support from many quarters.

When you remove the cultist fanatics you are left with a mix of religious types and people brought up to fear the idea of communism (which is a word used inter changeably with socialism out of ignorance of Western European socialist values).

The US was founded on puritan ideals driven out of Europe which have endured through time and the 60s era of USSR rivalry and Mccarthism.

We must understand this. And learn what motivates rather than dismissing fears and differences of values as 'backward' or 'bigotted'. They are just 'different' more often than not and not out of outward malice nor desire to oppress. That does exist of course but it needs to be separated out.

More than anything the case for liberalism and understanding of each other needs to be made by the centre whether they are democrats or republicans. The ugly word that Obama used a lot - compromise.

'Progressive' ideas and a more socialist agenda are only sustainable in the long term by slow change and by bringing the consensus of the population with you rather than imposing your ideas and values on a hostile audience. This is people management 101. Ultimately the role of the US president is people management rather than an authoritarian dictatorship style. Because the country was founded on the very principle of breaking from that and pursuing an agenda of healing the wounds of the break from King George. And then again rebuilding from the ashes of the civil war.

This is the Third Act of the History of the United States. It needs to refind the constitution and to save its soul.

I may be a European and a British one at that for my sins. But this means a lot to me as its always fascinated me in a strange way and i spent many years studying this.

I think Biden, is quite thankfully, a man who understands all this. Hes lived through enough to 'get it'. The US needs a wise old man before it can move forward to a more youthful and brighter future. One that hopefully benefits others beyond its shore.

/shuts the fuck up.

Boopear · 06/11/2020 20:54

@trumpety it was the Mississippi River Flyway Cam (you’ve just reminded me! Sounded great!)

AcrossthePond55 · 06/11/2020 20:54

@RedToothBrush

I agree with your post.

In fact, I wouldn't be completely surprised if Biden issued a pardon for the same reason that Ford did; 'to end our national nightmare'. I think I'd be disappointed, but not completely surprised. And I think it wouldn't be the same completely 'blanket' pardon, it would probably be restricted to things directly related to the presidency like the emoluments clause or issues surrounding bribery or quid pro quo, but would leave open issues of federal tax fraud in connection with his business dealings.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 06/11/2020 20:55

@RedToothBrush Never shut the fuck up.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/11/2020 20:55

That should say "I agree with your postS.

Delphinium20 · 06/11/2020 20:55

@RedToothBrush

Excellent post. Yes all day to this " the Republican party is currently a coalition of libertarian capitalists, the religious right and the far right racists."

These three groups are also as different culturally as you could imagine.

showmethegin · 06/11/2020 21:01

RTB Don't STFU, I'm learning all the time

cantdothisnow1 · 06/11/2020 21:07

@RedToothBrush

Totally agree, thankfully from what I've heard him say so does Biden.

chomalungma · 06/11/2020 21:09

Has anyone seen the Downfall parodies?

This is perfect for it.

Zixxy · 06/11/2020 21:09

So now that the frenzy has cooled down. What do you all think will happen?

I heard that Biden is to make a statement later, too late for me here, but it could be interesting.

Trump can just accept defeat graciously, or have a strop. I doubt he will go quietly. And will Trump attend the inauguration of Biden? Better if he doesn't, but guessing his ego won't allow this anyway.

Would be mad if Trump just stayed in the WH and refused to move lol.

womanaf · 06/11/2020 21:14

Been lurking on CNN all day - I love their 30 seconds of calm they show instead of ad breaks. It’s like ‘we know you’re stressed but here’s some cute pandas’
If they didn’t play ‘exciting drummy music’ all the way through everything, I’d be a lot less in need of the 30 seconds of calm. I had to turn to Sky News to give my brain a break from the drama of nothing happening but set to exciting music and shouty Wolf.

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 21:15

I am willing to bet that Biden will do a lot of referencing duty and service to the American people, its history and its constitution.

Its the thing that binds republicans and democrats and if he's to get anything done at all he's probably going to have to work his arse off on those principles first.

DuncinToffee · 06/11/2020 21:17

Update from Lewis Goodall

Update to the update

Biden lead

in Georgia: 1,616
in Arizona: 39,769
in Pennsylvania: 14,281
in Nevada: 20,137

Votes remaining

Georgia: 3,943
Arizona: 227,871
Pennsylvania: 116,434
Nevada: 140,001

ladybird303 · 06/11/2020 21:17

@RedToothBrush I agree.

The Democrats (and Labour over here) have become too 'woke' to be appealing to many people.

People are tired of being told they are too greedy / racist / sexist / not eco enough etc etc. So they turn to something more palatable that doesn't make them feel bad about themselves.

For what it is worth I want progress on all of the above but now see that people won't get on side if they feel criticised all the time.

lyralalala · 06/11/2020 21:17

I don't think he'll go.

I think Covid will mean the Inauguration has to be massively, massively scaled down anyway.

Trump will stay at home and spend the day Tweeting about the fraudulent President or something like that.

Or announce his 2024 plans to run on that day.
