Oh my, Biden is addressing the nation at 1am UK, I reckon I've had about 10 hours sleep since Tuesday!! Oh well, it's not like I've much on this weekend 😴😴😴😴😴

This did make me chuckle!

Call me cynical but it does make you wonder if the whole Trump presidency was engineered to get him out of facing prosecutions for a good few years, but he didn't bank on only being in power for one term & also for some daft reason he believed that he'd be considered the greatest President of all time so all these possible future lawsuits would die a quiet death.

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 20:16

I sincerely doubt trump will face any charges related to his time in office.

Why?

Because its not in the interests of America nor the Democrats

Why?

Because it forever leaves the door open to retrospectively prosecute anything a democratic president does in office (even if lawful at the time - think stuff to do with abortion and how republicans would love to prosecute for genocide).

But Trump is a creature of habit and a long term grifter and crook. His businesses are only doing well on the back of his white house address. Once removed from office that starts to crumble.

He no longer has the protection of office over his tax affairs. That means going forever his tax affairs are open season and will come under scrutiny.

And tbh, many, many Republicans want shot of him just as much as Democrats because he's now no longer of use to him and he's got a majority on the supreme court for them. In the long term they want any future candidate for the presidency to not be the same loose canon. And in primaries it will be interesting to see how things go - the Republican party is currently a coalition of libertarian capitalists, the religious right and the far right racists. Trump united them, but the manner of his departure is also likely to provoke infighting and conflict and i dont think Trump will be able to unite them again once the spell of fear he has over them breaks with his current actions.

The Democrats are wiser to tread carefully and wait for him to perform to character on a non political issue (tax, i'll put money on it being tax) and drop himself in it. It avoids certain conflicts and accusations. And the possibility of future political tit for tat. And they may well be aided by republicans whom Trump scorned. There is a queue out the door waiting to cash in on the inside story and to serve their revenge in the same fashion as Greta.

Donnie, Eric and Jared will also be up for all sorts of shit. Ivana will probably escape by virtue of being a mother and it being 'unseemly to pursue her for the sake of the kids'. Remember the US is socially conservative - it does serve the democrats politically to jail a mother of young kids.

Biden is sharp enough and smart enough to understand the pitfalls of going after the Trumps head on and politically. He's a centrist and they are pragmatic rather than ideologically driven. And that's what the US needs right now.

Plenty on the left in American politics and UK politics will be disappointed in this, but its what has to happen to move forward. This is how peace settlements (like our own GFA) are brokered. By difficult compromises to protect the security and stability of the future rather than drinking from the poisoned cup of the past.

Its funny how the last 4 years has been characterised by the cartoon of good v evil. There are so many well mannered innocent republicans whose sin is purely to have a sheltered life and not have othee outside influences beyond their small world. They are good people. Just flawed humans trying to get by as best they know. And explain away their cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy in just the same way an anti-capitalist who buys off amazon during lockdown cos its easy might.

Revenge on Trump isn't going to solve the problems the US faces. Trump must be put to trial in terms of facing justice for crimes against shared republican and democrat concerns and interests if it is to happen. The narrative is the important thing not the charges in the long run.

So everyone rubbing their hands that he will soon be in prison should step back and ask about what the end game is here.

I don’t think he ever expected to win in the first place! I think he just wanted to be the loud obnoxious guy yelling insults from the sidelines. Like that pair of old men in the Muppet Show.
Rodigan · 06/11/2020 20:18

Sorry my link didn't work, as I'm on my phone, but it's called 'meanwhile in Trump's bunker'. The video is doing the rounds on fbook watch!

Fox News claiming voter fraud in 1000s in Nevada

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 20:20

Damn it i want to see Biden's address.

1am uk time. Prime time us.

He's got assurances from the networks that they will all declare the race by then - probably not long before.

Biden has made speeches two nights in a row as evening approaches to calm nerves and tensions to prevent outbreaks of violence as evening approaches. Tonight will be the same.

Trump will hate it that he isn't getting the attention and will behave like a narcissist with ever increasing temper tantrums until someone steps in. That might yet be in January...

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 20:21

@Lweji

Fox News claiming voter fraud in 1000s in Nevada
Thats the military votes thing.

Fox going there isn't a smart move.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 06/11/2020 20:22

@StirlingFloss

I didn't realise Biden ran for President in 1988

@Roussette and anyone else who's interested... there's a really interesting podcast on BBC Sounds of an old, and hitherto lost tape of David Frost interviewing Joe Biden in 1988. Frost's son uncovered a bunch of recorded interviews that his father had left in storage and this was one of them.

It's fascinating listening to Biden running for president then, and listening with hindsight. He talks about the loss of his wife and baby daughter and meeting his current wife Jill, and generally comes across as a very nice empathetic guy. He also discussed his Catholicism and how he believes the duty of the president is not to impose their faith upon others.

Search Frost / Biden if it's of interest.

I watched a doc on Netflix (path to the whitehouse?) it was a series that went through old election campaigns.

Biden's run ended after he (allegedly?) plagiarized a Neil Kinnock speech, which eerily mirrors the Melania/Michelle Obama speech decades later. Of course, I'd still take Biden over Trump anyday

CaveMum · 06/11/2020 20:23

I thought the Nevada vote accusations hinged on the casual workers in and around Vegas who, having lost their jobs due to Covid, had returned to their home states and therefore been ineligible to vote. Not sure if they’re trying to claim they voted twice.

Lweji · 06/11/2020 20:24

They did show the big boy pants clip, though. I think that was meant as a message to the WH. Wink

Roussette · 06/11/2020 20:25

RTB that was an epic post. Agree with all of it. Despite the left wanting blood, that is what will not work to move on

There will be many decent Republicans (and yes, they are out there) who will be relieved that Trump has gone, they need to rebuilt the GOP they love so much.

However....
I have no sympathy for the family, any of them. (obv except Barron poor sod)
They reap what they sow

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 06/11/2020 20:26

Gosh these threads are moving fast! Another one for closing the borders to anyone not Scottish called Trump or related to him. I'll stand in the cold with Janey any day!

Feeling much better now; and like another poster I have a couple of tots of 'The Best' wiskey waiting for a special occasion Glitterball

scrappydappydoo · 06/11/2020 20:26

Been lurking on CNN all day - I love their 30 seconds of calm they show instead of ad breaks. It’s like ‘we know you’re stressed but here’s some cute pandas’

Roussette · 06/11/2020 20:28

scrappy should I disable my adblocker? i just get silence which is rather lovely!

Lweji · 06/11/2020 20:29

Fox News seem to be doing the same. Last one was a piano break

TheNorthWestPawsage · 06/11/2020 20:29

I hate Trump but I completely agree with you RTB.

Someone on CNN said earlier that Biden is known for being forgiving. That may be the best characteristic this new President can have.

Newjobnewslob · 06/11/2020 20:30

Agree with every word RTB, a considered and intelligent summary. Laughed at your description of an anti capitalist using amazon during Lockdown, quite...
(this is me!)

scrappydappydoo · 06/11/2020 20:30

I don’t know - I’m watching on my tv. They just play quiet piano music and scenic pictures, or pieces of art or just now some pandas playing.

scrappydappydoo · 06/11/2020 20:31

(In the uk by the way - so that many be the difference)

boatyardblues · 06/11/2020 20:36

I’m still catching this afternoon’s mammoth posting effort up, but DH and I were speculating about how Trump’s departure will play out. We were kidding around, but one of the scenarios was that Trump has his grab bag ready and private jet on standby so he can skip the US and head to a country without a US extradition when the outcome is declared/before the state prosecutors feel his collar. We thought he might even ditch before January & leave Pence to see his term out.

Mrsmorton · 06/11/2020 20:36

Fox have been watching too much Veep.
