Thanks for shiny new bigly thread!

I see nothing has changed but about to put CNN on and dig deep as to the numbers...

SabrinaThwaite · 06/11/2020 07:19

Latest batch of Georgia votes (added 45 minutes ago) were 86% Biden.

SunniCameHomeWithAVengeance · 06/11/2020 07:19

I'm just up, 7AM in Ireland. I was watching Joe Biden talking last night and you could just see the genuine sorrow he has for those who have lost a loved one to Covid. He is someone who has suffered such loss himself and the compassion he has is heartening especially as Trump never seems sincere and always wants to bring the topic back to himself.
I give Melania six months before she cashes in her chips and gets out. Hopefully Barron doesn't turn out like the rest of the Toxic Trumps.

@lionheart

Four years before they call a lie a lie.
Yes, @lionheart, why on earth has it taken so long, since it's been apparent from Day One?
Radiatornoise · 06/11/2020 07:20

Morning all.

What if Trump wins? Will he have to retract his statements about illegal voting and corruption? I’d like to see him alone in The White House without a friend in the world.

Agree with your post. It saddened me, to be honest,.. that a great country like America could be reduced to such a divisive, unfair, untrue, racist speech from a (hopefully) outgoing president.

As far as Detroit, I wanted to link this... they are doing everything legally and he is a big fat liar to cast such awful aspersions on the city and the people working hard to count votes in such a pressurised situation.

"One major hub for counting ballots in Detroit covered up the windows, again, with large pieces of cardboard, and so they wanted to protect, and block, the counting area. They didn't want anybody seeing the counting." (says Trump)

But at least 134 Republican poll challengers were already inside the vote counting area when this happened, along with a similar number of Democratic and independent observers.

On Wednesday, both Democratic and Republican challengers were prohibited from entering the center. That’s because the number of challengers already observing the process had reached capacity.

At one point Wednesday afternoon, 227 Republican challengers were roaming the room and observing the process — almost double the number of challengers who were supposed to be there.

By 1 p.m., there were more than 570 challengers circling the floor, far exceeding capacity. So security officials closed the doors to any new challengers to thin out the crowd, citing security and COVID-19 concerns.

Election officials and inspectors who oversaw the process and have worked for both Democrats and Republicans said the counting process was legitimate, transparent and fair. Moreover, security was beefed up at the center after Republican challengers started to get more aggressive on the floor, doing everything from verbally harassing the counters as they stood over their shoulders, forming a huge circle around the counters, clapping and chanting "Stop the Count! Stop the Count!"

Cardboard was placed over portions of the glass at the center because workers inside the center felt intimidated by the actions of those outside.

Now that is the truth. Not what Trump says.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/11/2020 07:40

I like the postscript to the article about Biden Cabinet selection. If Biden is elected, I would think that he would have to tread water as far as major initiatives which have to be passed by Congress were concerned, and would spend his term trying to reunite a country divided by Trump. If he managed to do that, I would deem him successful, though I doubt it's as easy as all that, given the disgusting Proud Boys and their ilk.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/11/2020 07:44

Thanks for that, @Roussette. So the Republicans at the Detroit counting centre are just being outright bullies and overstepping the mark, at the behest of their beloved leader. Disgusting. Out of interest, where was that account of counting in Detroit from, please?

frumpety · 06/11/2020 07:45

The thing with Trump questioning the process of counting etc , is that if there were any irregularities in the system that went against the Biden camp, how well would it go down if they started questioning any part of the process ? do you see what I mean ? Trump may well be bonkers, but I get the feeling it is often calculated bonkersness ?

freddosfrogs · 06/11/2020 07:46

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom

Good morning all, thank you for the new thread, *@freddosfrogs. I was reading the last one in the middle of the night and came up with a new thread title of my own but it was too soon to start it, so I'll just throw it in here: Trump election thread #whatever "I'll thcream and thcream 'till I'm thick" if you won't count me in, cries the so-called leader of the free world.* Anyway, I understood from the last thread that I missed the greatest speech ever made by the greatest narcissist on the world stage. I also understood that by the end of the speech, he was actually inciting violence against black people in Detroit and exhibiting a shocking level of racism which actually reduced two of CNN's presenters to tears (of horror and shock at what he has done to the country, I presume), though in written reports of his speech, I didn't see mention of this - I'm assuming that the networks who cut away from his lunacy have finally decided to stop reporting on his crap? (I refuse to actually try to watch (hear) him speak and look the video up.) If by some horrendous mischance he is re-elected, I really want all media just to remove the oxygen of publicity from him and let other people get on with the job - a president should not be sowing dissension and inciting one half of the population to take up arms against the other, even if half of them elected him, surely? It should not be allowed. That is why, though I understand people's misgivings about a Biden Presidency, I still feel it can only be better for a country which is currently being encouraged to self-harm by its President. If only his lies had not been reported on as truth since the day he was inaugurated, I'm sure things would not have got as bad as they have. I think respect for the office of the President should not be confused with respect for the person of the President, and it was evident from very early on that Trump 's character is not one most people can respect. Oh well, another day, another nail bitten off. Here's hoping Biden comes through and Trump is not allowed to destroy his country further. The powerful Republicans have shown their true colours in this. They have been enablers all along. Or maybe they agree with their president fomenting unrest and encouraging his followers to take up arms against their fellow-countrymen? Who knows.
Next time! It's brilliant

Hi Jai, it's the Detroit Free Press. The article also talks of Michigan. It debunks many of Trump's spurious claims in his speech

eu.freep.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/11/05/trump-speech-election-2020-detroit-michigan/6182170002/

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/11/2020 07:50

@frumpety - yes, I've been wondering that all along. I mean, if you look at Roussette's description of what has been happening in Detroit, with the Republican challengers ramping up their numbers to far more than legally necessary and actually obstructing the count, you can only admire the self-restraint of the Democrats in that situation. Though it must be so tempting for them to strike back in the same way, it is better for the country not to increase levels of violence between the parties.

Roussette · 06/11/2020 07:51

oh heck, so tired, Detroit IS in michigan of course. I'm watching two news channels at the same time whilst typing wrongly!

CaraDuneRedux · 06/11/2020 07:52

Just watched Trump's speech.

Even more detached from reality than usual.

CherryValanc · 06/11/2020 07:52

If (when) trump loses how will he play out the last month's of his presidency?

In a sulk? Refusung to do anything and just making crazy self-pitying speeches
Like a narcissistic sociopath? Vengfully and uncontrolled.

Roussette · 06/11/2020 07:56

From that article... to think there were 227 Republican challengers circling the room, then shouting, clapping and chanting stop the count, whilst forming a circle round the election workers is just awful.

Twice the number were in there, no wonder the officials called a halt to any more and no wonder the election workers felt intimidated by the crowd outside.

But as always the Republicans with Trump egging them on has turned this round to 'not being allowed in, windows boarded up with cardboard, binoculars needed to see because they were so far away'. All so wrong.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/11/2020 07:57

Quote from Christiane Amanpour:

A reflection on President Trump’s comments last night:

The last President I covered who refused to accept the vote count in an election was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran, 2009.

Minimammoth · 06/11/2020 07:59

Morning. Another fraught day. Can someone just sedate him until it’s over.

Roussette · 06/11/2020 08:00

Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon live on CNN on the late news shift, saying they are expecting results on their shift and that election workers are counting through the night.
'Democracy in action'

Msloverlover · 06/11/2020 08:01

Trump lead in Georgia down to 600. Biden expected to overtake in the next couple of hours. This is like being really overly invested in a tortoise race.
