@Goosefoot I think in terms of 1) there's been a very similar phenomenon here, with working class voters drifting to the Tories. I think it's largely to do with the rise of Populism which has taken over traditionally conservative politics. A lot of working class people feel forgotten about and ignored, and Populism stokes this by giving easy answers (£350m a week for the NHS!) and convenient scapegoats (all those immigrants coming over here and stealing your jobs!). It's a great con trick really that's been played on these people, to get them to vote against their own interests. I'm sure Russia has had quite a bit to do with it behind the scenes, particularly in terms of amplifying things on social media.
I agree it's the same phenomena, but I don't think it's particularly a matter of convincing people to vote against their own interests.

Look at Clinton's welfare reforms, the way they carried on with the deregulation program. Clinton, and later Obama, both carried on with Reganomics - trickle down economics and the neoliberal project. He did nothing in terms of unions or labour rights which were being degraded.

Anyone telling working people that's all in their best interests, please just quietly vote for the Democrats, should expect to get the finger from them.

DH thinks that Georgia will drop for Biden too but its going to be just a few votes in it - postly only a few thousand.

Nah - Trump has 100% got Georgia I'm afraid.

tobee · 05/11/2020 15:01

@oneglassandpuzzled

Yes definitely agree there! Was going to put that in but didn't want to ramble on!

chloechloe · 05/11/2020 15:03

Just seen that Alaska has 50% of the votes still to be counted, good job that nothing is turning on that!

tobee · 05/11/2020 15:03

@RedToothBrush

HUGE news from Pennsylviania.

The number of uncounted ballots has gone UP.

This is expected. The original number of uncounted ballots was only ballots recieved until Sunday. They have now received more VALID ballots.

This makes it almost impossible for Trump to win Pennsylviania.

Biden is on the home run, and all but there.

I think DH is pretty much calling it for Biden now. Its just a matter of time.

DH thinks that Georgia will drop for Biden too but its going to be just a few votes in it - postly only a few thousand.

I trust you as a (long time ) voice of reason @RedToothBrush but I'm still nervous #2016stilltraumatised.

Surely to God there's somebody with a brain to step in to stop any rioting?

DuncinToffee · 05/11/2020 15:17

Sky News is saying that the Georgia vote count will be finished by noon, 5pm UK time

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/11/2020 15:19

Here's a view from a poet.

Brian Bilston
Stories from Another Country
There are rumours that buried deep in the sands
of the Mojave Desert are fifty giant strongboxes,
each filled with a million Republican votes,
while in Wisconsin, at Milwaukee County Courthouse,
a group of left-leaning groundhogs, dressed up
as county officials, ate any ballot they didn’t much care for.
It is also claimed that in the state of Georgia,
nine out of ten votes counted were submitted by one man,
a Mr Joel E. Binden of Pine Grove Drive, Lawrenceville,
and that in Sugarcreek, Pennsylvania, an outbreak
of collective hysteria, triggered by some contamination
in the water, resulted in many ballots wrongly cast
for the Democrats. Meanwhile, in Washington DC,
reports are emerging of a monstrous creature,
orange-skinned and bigly-girthed, a sagging couch
with corn husk hair and a mouth like a sphincter muscle,
howling in defeat, pounding the floor with its tiny fists,
clawing the walls as it gets dragged from its lair.

Georgia could be the giant killers in this - can they end up influencing the Senate majority too?! Biden would have all 3 legislatures!

#BREAKING: Georgia Senator David Perdue (R-Inc) has now fallen below the 50% mark. With outstanding ballots to be counted coming from primarily Democratic-leaning precincts, it is likely that Georgia will have two runoff races for U.S. Senate.

I think Snyder and Union counties are still refusing to count late arriving ballots in Penn. I don't know if they're the only ones but I think they will be made to count them in the end. Maybe those votes won't be needed. Friend calling it Pennsyltucky.

SabrinaThwaite · 05/11/2020 15:32

CNN reporting just over 61,000 ballots left to count in Georgia.

Isn't there anybody in the Republican party that will say "FFS Donald, sit doon, shut up and stop making a tit of yourself"

NYTimes via Nate Cohn

The basic breakdown: Biden's still on track in Pennsylvania. There's enough mail-in vote, there's still in person vote in Philadelphia, and there are a lot of provisionals. The first indications are that they're very Democratic.

chloechloe · 05/11/2020 15:39

Am I going to have to stay up late again?

Nevada result is expected at 5 pm UK time.

Arizona at 2 am UK time.

Georgia results expected on “Thursday”, so early hours in the UK.

Biden will win with 2 of those 3 won’t he? Who’s staying up?

TokyoSushi · 05/11/2020 15:40

The current situation for Georgia from the Georgia Secretary of State:

60000 votes still need to be counted

Msloverlover · 05/11/2020 15:47

It ain’t over until the orange man shouts “FAKE VOTES”

tobee · 05/11/2020 15:48

Including military ballots Don?

Jason118 · 05/11/2020 15:49

@RedToothBrush if it does fall as your DH has suggested, please give him a hug from me (a manly one of course). A light in my darkness of yesterday, so thank you. Smile

Not A Happy Bunny part 2.

My post was supposed to have quote, re military ballots Blush

anon444877 · 05/11/2020 15:51

Hilary Clinton encouraging absentee ballot voters in GA to check their vote status as it can be fixed if declared invalid!

I'm not convinced we'll get a decision tonight, just a further indication. Since my dc will likely wake me up in the small hours I may check anyway!

CoffeeandCroissant · 05/11/2020 15:53
