@Blueberries0112:
"That's doesn't really seem fair though, everyone already voted and they can't change their mind but these people can"

I think they have to be clearly postmarked before election day.
(I'm sure someone better informed than me can confirm / counter this)

CherryValanc · 05/11/2020 18:28

[quote DuncinToffee]Georgia updated: Trump lead cut again to 13,540. 2% of the vote remains to be counted.

This is where having transferable vote would be great. (Well that's me assuming Jorgensen's would tender to Biden!!!)

SabrinaThwaite · 05/11/2020 18:28

Save your outrage, mail in ballotshave to postmarked November 3rd.

Neeeeeeeaaarly there.... 🤞

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/11/2020 18:29

@AcrossthePond55, There is a (very)small side of me that fears that Joe Biden winning will be a shit sandwich for him. Headache after headache after headache for the poor guy. Even if Kamala takes the helm , it just seems an utterly thankless task.

ChickOnAStick · 05/11/2020 18:30

So, all seems to be quiet in NC? What's happening?

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 18:31

Back from work and trying to catch up - you've been busy!

@TokyoSushi

I go away for an hour (to sort out DD's hell hole of a bedroom) and Biden's at 264! What happened?!

So close now!!!

Who you looking at

AP (Guardian) and Fox have called Arizona and Wisconsin and have Biden on 264.
CNN and BBC haven't yet called Arizona.

Nevada is likely to get called relatively soon by one of the networks/agencies. Numbers there are pretty solid now. If its AP or Fox THEN its interesting...

...Nevada is 6 points.

In the last twenty minutes.

Jon Ralston @RalstonReports (Editor, The Nevada Independent)
HERE'S WHERE WE ARE:

Washoe only has few thousand provisionals left -- should be a wash.

Few thousand rural votes left -- Biden will lose 2k max there, probably less.

That leaves Clark and tens of thousands of mail and provisionals. Little chance Dems lose there.

SO...

Biden is up by 11.4K right now in NV.

Dems are going to win these mail ballots coming in from Election Day and yesterday -- 63K. And they should win them decisively. That leaves 60K provisionals, which have been evenly split.

I see no path left for Trump here.

We are close. Even though we will have to wait til all the court cases and ballots are officially counted everywhere. But the news channels and agencies will call much sooner.

Ok , so they are saying they are going to wait for all mail in to come in. For a second, I thought people still were allowed to use mail in (maybe because of coronavirus?)

PullTheBricksDown · 05/11/2020 18:33

So it might take till the weekend if Biden needs Nevada. But a win for him in Pennsylvania would make it unnecessary.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/11/2020 18:35

CNN now talking to Penn Secretary of State who thinks they will have overwhelming majority of votes counted by end of today.

CaveMum · 05/11/2020 18:35

For those that are saying this election has sparked an interest in politics, if you want to learn more about US politics I can’t suggest anything better than watching The West Wing.

I know it’s a running joke that I’m always quoting the show or making reference to it, but honestly the show is a real education in how the US political system works.

All 7 seasons are available to watch on All4 (Channel 4 catch up) and honestly it is soooo wort ph it. Probably one of the best TV shows ever made. If you can’t bear the thought of 7 seasons then jump to season 6 which starts the coverage of the nomination process ahead of the next election and season 7 which covers the election itself right through to Inauguration Day. Obviously jumping ahead means you’ll miss a lot of character backstory.

It will inspire and depress you in equal measure, when you compare it to the current circus we are witnessing. It’s worth noting that the character of Matt Santos was allegedly inspired by Barack Obama (who when the series was made was still a relative unknown) and the character of Josh Lyman is allegedly inspired by Rahm Emanuel, who later became Obama’s Chief off Staff.

Just out of curiosity, how is the 'post voting' period handled in the UK? Are there exit polls and 'calling' or just 'radio silence' on the news until the votes are completely tallied and certified?

Normally the 'calling' by the news isn't that big a deal here, as the official results swiftly follow because the number of mail-ins isn't nearly as large. Sometimes the mail ins aren't even counted because they wouldn't make a difference, the number of in-person votes are so overwhelming. I have a feeling some states are going to be reviewing their mail in counting policies. I expect to see more states move to starting to count before election day.

PullTheBricksDown · 05/11/2020 18:36

There's also some issue with folk getting the opportunity to provide their ID and so verify their vote in Nevada. Not change the vote.

CherryValanc · 05/11/2020 18:38

CNN have Biden as projected winner for New Hampshire, Michigan and Minnesota. Total at 30 electoral votes.

Zixxy · 05/11/2020 18:39

Doesn't matter about anything else political right now. Most normal people just want the relief of Trump NOT being an uncouth abominable President anymore.
We've had four years of this megalomaniac and things really need to settle down now. Will deal with other things in time.
But it's not over yet. Which is not good either.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 18:40

@PullTheBricksDown

So it might take till the weekend if Biden needs Nevada. But a win for him in Pennsylvania would make it unnecessary.
It will be called by the press sooner.

That changes the narrative and starts to make Trump look crazy. Many reasonable Republicans will accept it even if they are disappointed. Especially if Fox call it.

Then focus at that point starts to be more about what legal challenges he can pull in Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona which are much harder to argue the case for.

It means all the noise in Georgia and Pennsylviania about the courts becomes just that - noise.

The NV/AZ route is therefore a lot more solid than if Biden needed Pennsylviania.

At this point I am now more concerned about violence and how much Trump stirs the shit than the votes themselves.

Remember if the counts are all stopped now, Biden wins.

I can't bear to listen to what's happening in PA, it's all going to go wrong there isn't it ?!

OP posts:
Iwillneverbesatisfied · 05/11/2020 18:42

will there be no states declaring today? Will we have to wait til tomorrow or longer?

Dongdingdong · 05/11/2020 18:42

I can't bear to listen to what's happening in PA

Why not? Biden doesn’t even need PA!

Phoenix21 · 05/11/2020 18:42

@CaveMum I tried to distract myself watching West wing on Tues night but everyone must have had the same idea as it kept freezing in the early hrs Grin

Official counts for each consituancy aren't announced until all votes in that constituency are counted (but counting generally takes hours not days). Before that happens we just have the exit polls to go on.

We have exit polls and then various constituencies race to try to be the first to count. Pretty much everywhere counts overnight and aim to have a result by the morning. Calling by the media isn't a thing over here at all. We wait for the official results.
