You've probably all seen this as it's from early this morning so at least three threads ago. Does anyone know if Trump's African angels have arrived yet?

@AcrossthePond55

Just out of curiosity, how is the 'post voting' period handled in the UK? Are there exit polls and 'calling' or just 'radio silence' on the news until the votes are completely tallied and certified?

Normally the 'calling' by the news isn't that big a deal here, as the official results swiftly follow because the number of mail-ins isn't nearly as large. Sometimes the mail ins aren't even counted because they wouldn't make a difference, the number of in-person votes are so overwhelming. I have a feeling some states are going to be reviewing their mail in counting policies. I expect to see more states move to starting to count before election day.

Postal votes must be recieved by the end of Election Day.

If its late, tough shit.

You can drop them in the ballot box on the day though.

Dongdingdong · 05/11/2020 18:44

will there be no states declaring today?

Georgia was meant to be declaring at 5pm UK time today. Lord knows what is taking them so long Hmm

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 05/11/2020 18:45

UK has exit polls, but then we don't hear anything until every vote is counted and the result released for that constituency (one MP per constituency and they get a seat in the parliament then the party with most MPs wins the majority and has Prime Minister).
I am definitely going to watch The West Wing, I learned a bit from Designated Survivor but don't understand the Senate/House at all.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 18:45

These legal challenges are... going well....

A state court judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Trump campaign that asked for an immediate halt to the vote counting until its representatives had “meaningful” access to ballot counting and adjudication.

Judge Cynthia Stephens was highly skeptical throughout a virtual hearing on Thursday about the lack of admissible evidence in the case and whether the campaign had sued the right party (Secretary of State Benson).

“What I have is, at best, a hearsay affidavit that addresses a harm that would be significant,” said Judge Cynthia Stephens. “We’ve got an affidavit that is not first-hand knowledge.”

Postal votes and a small margin

^Biden is up by 11.4K right now in NV.

Dems are going to win these mail ballots coming in from Election Day and yesterday -- 63K. And they should win them decisively. That leaves 60K provisionals, which have been evenly split.

I see no path left for Trump here.

There's not as much need for calling when our counting happens much quicker. Newcastle and Sunderland usually compete to be fastest to declare - I think one of them has done their counting and declared in 60 minutes recently. But that is more like an individual US county declaring in terms of numbers. Not sure when postal votes get counted. Probably at the same time as the on the day votes but the numbers just aren't as comparable.

We do have exit polls.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/11/2020 18:50

Just placemarking.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 18:50

We do have exit polls.

And ours are a) useful b) pretty accurate!

CoffeeandCroissant · 05/11/2020 18:51

Oops, already been posted. Grin Blush

CherryValanc · 05/11/2020 18:51

There's a lot of stages involved in postal votes. Takes time.

Alsohere's so many more of them this election, and limited machine for the volume.

borntobequiet · 05/11/2020 18:52

Post- (and pre- voting in the U.K.).

On the day of the election media keep schtum. No politicking allowed. At most, a mention that people are going to the polls and some reporting of problems, if any. Some mention of turnout/rate of voting allowed, also entertaining stories involving pets etc. So if a dog went into a polling station and sat and begged to vote, it would probably get a mention on the Beeb.). Exit poll numbers announced when polls close, never before. Votes are counted mostly by local government staff and are observed by party representatives. As the night goes on, reporting can discreetly talk about tight looking races. Tradition demands a Dimbleby to anchor the BBC TV coverage but they are disappearing from the scene nowadays. Results are given by the returning officer for the constituency, never called by news outlets or anyone else. My experience of local/general elections many years ago also involved entertainment provided by the local great and good (Shire Tories) inevitably turning up late in the day after way too many G&Ts. It may be different now.

Didn’t hear about Georgia announcing a time for declaring a result - the only 5pm UK time update scheduled was for Nevada.

Georgia still had 50,000 votes left to count at 5pm UK.

Zixxy · 05/11/2020 18:52

I am in ROI and because we have a PR/STV system some counts can go on for days! But it is great entertainment and representative also..

I gather that the delayed results in US (FPTP) is to do with State rules on when post in votes can be counted.

Keep the faith.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/11/2020 18:53

@CaveMum Do I recall right? Were you having a baby at the time of the last election?

DuncinToffee · 05/11/2020 18:56

Cordelia Lynch
There are 500,000 votes still to be counted in #Pensylvannia. 100,000 in heavily Democrat leaning Philadelphia. Biden needs to win 6 in 10 of the remaining votes. He's winning more than that now.

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 18:56

@Dongdingdong

I can't bear to listen to what's happening in PA

Why not? Biden doesn’t even need PA!

Doesn't he? Sorry, I've been offline (work, gah!) and haven't got my head round where it's at yet, still reading through.
@AcrossthePond55, There is a (very)small side of me that fears that Joe Biden winning will be a shit sandwich for him. Headache after headache after headache for the poor guy. Even if Kamala takes the helm , it just seems an utterly thankless task.
I agree it is a shit sandwich. But IMO Joe knows what he's getting into.

I don't think he will consider it a thankless task though, I think he thinks of it as his duty based on his long history of public service. And I also think he knows he will have the gratitude of a great number of US citizens (and US residents, both documented and undocumented) as well as most of our overseas friends although most of us won't be in a position to thank him personally.

I hate to get religious on everyone, but I'm reminded of this verse "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!"

Igotjelly · 05/11/2020 19:00

My heads fried but I think he needs Nevada and Arizona (with Georgia a maybe) and that's enough. Is that right?

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 19:01

Nope. Doesn't need PA.

Nevada almost a Biden cert. Which makes it interesting for Fox!

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 19:02

Biden needs either PA or any other two of AZ, NV, GA or NC.

So yes NV + AZ would do it.

LarkDescending · 05/11/2020 19:02

The Guardian’s Nina Lakhani reports from Northampton county:

Kathy Boockvar, Pennsylvania secretary of state, has just told CNN that the winner of the state could be announced tonight.

There are still 550,000 ballots left to be processed, but officials are ahead of schedule and most will be counted by this evening, Boockvar said.

The key is Philadelphia, where there’s about 100,000 outstanding ballots and where Joe Biden is winning a whopping 80% of votes.

This means it may not matter that Allegany county, home to Pennsylvania’s second-largest city of Pittsburgh, has suspended counting until tomorrow.

Boockvar also said that Donald Trump’s legal appeal to discount mail-in ballots posted by 3 November, but which arrive before the end of Friday 6 November, would not make a significant difference as there’s only a few thousand.

Reminder: as things stand, Trump cannot win without Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral college seats. His lead has shrunk from 618,000 on Wednesday morning to 111,000 right now.
